Travel guide lists top 1,000 sights in the world

Lonely Planet’s 1000 Ultimate Sights features everything from Stonehenge to Baker Street.

Travel guide Lonely Planet has ranked the top1,000 must-see places in the world, reports the Daily Mail.

The absolutely massive list, published in the book Lonely Planet’s 1000 Ultimate Sights, is sub-divided into 100 smaller lists, covering everything from the most amazing cathedrals and churches to the most intriguing clocks and calendars.

With its long history, archeological findings and architectural gems, the U.K. has taken many spots on the lists. Stonehenge, in the English county of Wiltshire, actually appears on three separate top 10 lists: most mysterious sights, most brilliant night sky, and best sunrise/sunset.

London’s Baker Street – home to the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes – was voted one of the best literary sites, while Cornwall’s Tintagel Castle – the legendary home of King Arthur – was ranked as one of the most fairytale-like European castles.

Edinburgh’s Scott Monument makes the list for one of the world’s spookiest buildings, while Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway was ranked as one of the most unusual beaches.

The travel guide – which contains the massive top-1,000 list, as well as suggested itineraries for major international destinations – is available through the Lonely Planet website.
