Two Epi Pen doses for some kids

Some allergic reactions are so intense they require two doses of epinephrine.

It may be necessary to administer two doses of epinephrine for some children with severe allergic reactions.

A team at Boston University conducted a study of 1,255 children. The results showed that a fifth of kids falling into anaphylactic shock should receive two injections to control their allergic reaction to food.

Anaphylaxis occurs when the body has a severe reaction to a substance. This reaction happens very quickly after ingestion and can make it extremely difficult to breathe which puts the child’s life in danger.

They recommend that children with severe food allergies always have two Epi Pens with them.

Some of the most common allergies include peanuts, nuts and milk. 23% of the population is allergic to peanuts, 18% are allergic to nuts and 15% are allergic to milk.

300,000 people in Quebec have one or more allergies. The allergies listed above affect 8% of kids and that number is on the rise each year.
