It is widely known that Usher married Tameka Foster when she was five-months pregnant in 2007 against his mother’s wishes. Mom apparently didn’t approve of their age difference (he was 28, the bride was 37 and had three children from a previous marriage). The R&B star followed his heart and the couple went on to have two sons together before divorcing last year.
Usher reflected on that time in his life during a VH1 Behind the Music documentary that aired Monday night (July 19). He recounted: "I was like, ‘This is my life, this is my choice.’ She (mum) just couldn’t allow me to have that moment."
For her part, Jonnetta Patton would not elaborate on the disagreement with her son, saying only "That’s something I really don’t wanna talk about."
Patton quit as Usher’s manager in 2009. A source revealed: "She felt as though if she didn’t end things when she did, it would permanently affect their personal relationship."
