Video: a standing ovation for Adam Johnson

Adam Johnson’s death has shaken the field hockey world. As a former player with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he deserved a tribute from his team, and more than just a post on social networks.

The Penguins paid tribute to Johnson in the best possible way, even going above and beyond the call of duty. We always see ceremonies where everyone is asked to remain silent for a moment to pay tribute to the deceased.

This time, Pittsburgh bucked the trend. The organization asked its fans to stand and applaud Adam Johnson one last time in his honor.

Here’s the video of the ceremony.

Johnson earns himself a standing ovation of at least 33 seconds and probably even more! Unfortunately, the video cuts off while the crowd is still screaming and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop.

It’s good to see this, and especially good to see players from both teams standing in a circle in the middle of the rink. Officials even join them to pay their last respects to the deceased center forward.

The camera also gives us close-up shots of Sidney Crosby and Kristopher Letang. The two Pittsburgh veterans played with Johnson a few years ago, and you can see the emotion in their eyes, the sadness of losing someone they’d worked so closely with.

Adam Johnson may only have played 13 games with the Penguins over two seasons, but he was part of the organization for three seasons, during which he was an important cog in Pittsburgh’s training club, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

I think this new way of paying tribute to people who have left their mark on an organization is refreshing and should be used more often. Believe me, it would be simply incredible to see a packed Bell Centre cheering with all its might for a CH legend.
