Vietnamese Internet cafés ordered to close up at night

Government orders Internet cafés to close between 11:00 p.m. and 6 a.m.

When visiting Asia, it’s always nice to be able to pop into an Internet café catch up with loved ones on the other side of the globe.

This innocent pastime will be forbidden in Vietnam between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. since authorities are curtailing Internet café hours and further tightening the control by installing spyware, according to daemonnews.org.

The official reason for closing the cafés during the wee hours, according to authorities, is to protect young people against inappropriate content and gaming addictions. Cafés can be fined for violations.

In June, Internet giant Google said it was troubled by Vietnam’s new regulations that may allow authorities to block access to websites and track the activities of Internet users.

So remember, if you go to Vietnam, Big Brother is listening.
