Villagers support Madonna’s project

Rumours that Madonna has upset villagers by kicking them off their land to build a school are false.

The director of Madonna’s Raising Malawi Foundation denies recent reports saying the singer is facing protests by villagers. The singer supports the construction of a girls’ school in Malawi.

The latest rumours suggest that residents of Blantyre, Malawi are angry and dissatisfied with the financial compensation they received to relocate.

Villagers were warned they could face prosecution if they did not make way for the new project.

They threaten to block the project because they are not happy with the amount of compensation they received. Phillip Van den Bosche, director of Raising Malawi, says those rumours are ridiculous and that locals are happy about the school.

He adds, "The thought that Madonna would be going on this land to take something away or to hurt people or to bulldoze people out of their homes is ridiculous. The school is built to build cultural pride, not to destroy it."

This school for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds is a $15 million (US) project.
