Vitamin D Deficiency in Mothers and Newborns

A study revealed occurrences of vitamin D deficiency in mothers and newborns.

According to Dr. Anne Merewood’s study conducted with her team at the Breastfeeding Center at Boston Medical Center, one-third of pregnant women and more than half of their newborns experienced a vitamin D deficiency at the time of birth.

The researcher evaluated the levels of vitamin D in 433 women who gave birth, in comparison to the levels measured from the umbilical cord in 376 babies, within 72 hours after delivery.

It was discovered that there was a 36% vitamin D deficiency in the mothers and a 58% deficiency in the newborns.

It seems that this phenomenon occurred even though the participating women consumed vitamin supplements before pregnancy.
