We Are The World in Spanish

Gloria Estefan wants to bring Latin singers together to help Haiti.

Gloria Estefan is a Latin American artist with a successful career in the United States. Her hits in the 80s and 90s were sung in English as well as Spanish. She has now decided to bring today’s hottest Latin talent together to do a Spanish remake of We Are The World.

According to blogger Perez Hilton, the song has been translated into Spanish and Lionel Ritchie, the song’s co-author with Michael Jackson, gave his permission for the remake. Money raised will go to the Haitian reconstruction effort.

Gloria Estefan has already invited artists like Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin and Paulina Rubio, to name a few of the best known in the U.S. The Spanish cover of We Are The World will be called simply Somos El Mundo.

A few weeks ago, Lionel Ritchie and producer Quincy Jones invited a new generation of artists, including Canadians Céline Dion and Justin Bieber, to sing an updated version of the song. It was written originally in 1985 to raise money for Ethopia. That country was experiencing one of the worst droughts in its history.
