Where is the best restaurant in the world?

Chef René Redzepi’s Noma restaurant dethrones El Bulli on the eve of its closure.

The S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2010 has been released. Its website describes the list as "a poll of the world’s most celebrated chefs, renowned food critics, leading restaurateurs and well-travelled gourmands."

Chef Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli restaurant has dominated the list since 2006. This is a small haute cuisine restaurant near the town of Roses, Catalonia, Spain. It operates at a loss and is going to soon close.

Now for the first time in his career, Noma’s young chef René Redzepi finds himself in the top spot. El Bulli doesn’t fall far on the list, moving down to number two.

Noma is a restaurant in Copenhagen, Denmark that opened its doors in 2004. Last year, it ranked third on the list. Noma is renowned for its Nordic cuisine reinvented by the 32-year old chef.

The website also describes the aim of publishing this list: "First published in 2002 and now in its eighth year, The S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants is recognised around the world as a credible indicator of the best places to eat on Earth. Every year it stimulates fervent debate for the weeks and months from the announcement of The S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and the excitement it generates amongst those who aspire to make the list, and the massive interest it brings to the restaurant industry in general, have seen it grow into an eagerly anticipated, internationally influential event."
