White knight Sir Paul McCartney

The former member of the Beatles wants to try to save Abbey Road Studios.

Paul McCartney was shocked to learn this week that EMI Records wants to sell the mythical Abbey Road Studios. He now wants to save the place.

In an interview with Newsnight on the BBC, Paul McCartney explained what it meant to him."I have so many memories there with the Beatles. It still is a great studio. So it would be lovely for someone to get a thing together to save it."

The former Beatle talked about possibly putting together a group of people, "A few people who have been associated with the studio for a long time."

The Beatles recorded almost all their albums there. Pink Floyd recorded some of its biggest hits there, including the albums Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here. Radiohead, U2 and Oasis are among the many artists who also worked there.

Others are suggesting the British National Trust acquire the studio. It has already bought the childhood homes of Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
