Wyclef Jean Heads for Haiti

Singer Wyclef Jean has decided to return to his native country of Haiti to offer his help.

The artist announced on his Twitter page that he is going to do what he can to help his fellow countrymen in the wake of the recent catastrophe.

Haiti was hit hard yesterday (January 12) by a devastating earthquake, which measured 7.0 on the Richter Scale.  The country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, is in ruins, and the Petionville Hospital and Presidential Palace totally collapsed in the quake.

So far, Doctors Without Borders has treated more than 600 wounded survivors, but that number is expected to climb in the coming days.

Wyclef Jean was born in Haiti in 1972 and emigrated to the United States at the age of 10.  He was a member of The Fugees before embarking on a solo career, and has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.

The musician has always been very active in his support for his homeland.  He created the Wyclef Jean Foundation and the Yele Haiti organization in 2005.  Via Twitter, Jean asked people to send a text message to YELE 501501.  In doing so, a donation will automatically be made to the organization.  Donations can also be made from the charity’s Web site.
