Wyclef Jean runs for president

The musician/activist announces he will run for president of Haiti.

Grammy Award winner Wyclef Jean wants to be Haiti’s next president. The former Fugees frontman was born in Port-au-Prince and moved to New York as a child. He remains closely connected to his homeland and was extremely affected by the January 12 earthquake in that country.

He admitted to Time magazine on Monday (August 2): "If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this. The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century."

Wyclef Jean’s spokeswoman Cindy Tanenbaum said the singer will make an announcement on Thursday night (August 5). He is expected to officially announce his candidacy on Larry King Live and answer questions about his platform.

Well-known Haitian musician and blogger Richard Morse posted a comment on Twitter saying: "If Sean Penn can be the mayor of a Haitian town and Bill Clinton can be co-president of Reconstruction, then Wyclef can be president."
