New contract: Kent Hughes also wanted to sign on the cheap

Over the past few years, the Canadiens have established a new culture. As wesaw just yesterday, Lane Hutson signed an eight-year contract that will have an impact of less than $9 million on the payroll,even though he had his reasons for doing so.that said,we also learned today that club executives Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton have signed contract extensions. And what’s interesting is that during tonight’s Insider Trading segment, Pierre LeBrun revealed an interesting piece of information: Kent Hughes also agreed to sign at a discount.He didn’t want to break the bank.

[content-ads]According to LeBrun, Hughes wasn’t interested in getting paid as much as guys like Kyle Dubas and Brad Treliving, who are among the highest-paid executives in the Bettman circuit. The GM obviously wanted to lead by example… even though, in reality, he’s not subject to a salary cap,so he didn’t have to (and it didn’t give his club a competitive edge)… but he still wanted to sign at a discount.We don’t know if Jeff Gorton did the same, but we do know that, theoretically, he’s above Hughes in the hierarchy, so it’s safe to assume he got more money. And after all, he’s more experienced than Hughes in a leadership role… and we know he’s been courted by other teams in recent years (although he’s never thought of leaving, according to Geoff Molson).But in any case, it’s very cool to see that the GM has led by example and has also agreed to do what he asks of his players.
