The festival will take place from May 16 through 27, under the leadership of Frears, who directed the films High Fidelity, The Queen, and Dangerous Liaisons, among others.

Frears succeeds Wong Kar-Wai, who held the position last year.  In 1987, Frears was awarded the best artistic contribution prize for his work in the film Prick Up Your Ears.

The new president spoke about being selected for the role, saying, "Of course, it’s an honour but it’s also a treat, to be able to watch terrific films from all over the world in such heady surroundings. God Save Cannes! (as well as the Queen)."
