China locked radar on Japanese fighter plane according to Japanese government

According to the Japanese government, China has committed what is considered one of the most threatening acts by a military aircraft by directing a ‘radar lock’ on two Japanese fighter jets near Japan’s Okinawa islands. The ‘radar lock’ – which forces fighter jets to take immediate evasive action by signalling a potential missile threat – is considered to be one of the most threatening acts a military can make on an aircraft. Japan’s Defence Minister, Shinjirō Koizumi, has criticized the move, stating « the occurrence of such an incident is extremely regrettable, ».

« China’s intentions are unclear, but if it is [only] to locate, there is no need to do that intermittently. »

What we know

Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjirō Koizumi claimed that on Saturday, a Chinese J-15 military jet « intermittently » targeted its radar at Japanese F-15s in two incidents for about three minutes in the afternoon and 30 minutes in the evening. The J-15 was reportedly launched from China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier, which was travelling between the main island of Okinawa and nearby Miyako island. The vessel was reportedly carrying out aircraft takeoff and landing drills in the Pacific Ocean. The Japanese F-15s were dispatched in response to a potential airspace violation by China, but Japanese airspace was not breached.

Strained relations over Taiwan

The incident has only worked to further strain the already tense relationship between China and Japan. Taiwan has been self-governing since 1949, and does not consider itself part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Taiwan has its own military, currency, constitution, legal system, and democratically elected government, none of which are controlled by the PRC. Still, China continues to assert its claim that Taiwan is Chinese territory. The feud between Japan and China stems from a November statement by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who said Japan’s military would be willing to intervene if China were to make any advances against Taiwan.

Not an overt act of war

A target lock is not an overt act of war, as target locks can be used solely for identification purposes. That being said, China’s motivations are unclear, with a Japanese defense minister stating, « China’s intentions are unclear, but if it is to locate, there is no need to do that intermittently. » The argument is that if China were simply attempting to locate the jet, why don’t they do so more regularly? The statement made by Japan on Sunday marks the first time that Tokyo’s defense ministry has publicly disclosed a fire-control radar lock by Chinese military jets against Japanese aircraft, and just the second time it’s announced any Chinese radar lock, marking the near-historic military tension between the two nations.

After the incident, Australia came forward to step up cooperation with Japan, during a press conference with Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi at the Defense Ministry in Tokyo on Sunday. During the press conference, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles stated, « The events last night are concerning, and Australia has also experienced concerning events in interactions [with China], » and Australia would be willing to « assert the rules-based order in this region. » Marles also reinforced Australia’s support of an independent Taiwan, stating, “We do not want to see any change to the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. » The two countries also agreed to set up a ‘Framework for Strategic Defense Coordination’, to consult on intelligence gathering, industry, technology, cyber and missile defense.

Four countries boycott Eurovision 70 over Israeli inclusion

Four countries have now pulled out of Eurovision in protest of Israel’s inclusion in the competition. Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Slovenia have all announced that they will not attend Eurovision 2026 if Israel is allowed to compete. The pullouts came after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) — the group of public broadcasters from 56 countries that runs the event — said there would not be a vote on whether to exclude Israel, despite calls from some countries to do so. So far, just the four public broadcasters mentioned have pulled out, but some expect other countries to follow suit.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said on X that he was « pleased » Israel will again take part, and hoped « the competition will remain one that champions culture, music, friendship between nations, and cross-border cultural understanding. » Host nation Austria reportedly supports Israel’s participation, as does Germany.

War on Gaza taking centerfold

Israel’s violent war on Gaza has taken center stage over the last two years after pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated against Israel outside the last two Eurovision contests in Basel, Switzerland, in May and Malmö, Sweden, in 2024. Russia was expelled from Eurovision in 2022 for its attack on Ukraine, sparking criticism of a double standard. Nearly every international human rights group has deemed Israel’s war on Gaza to be a genocide, but not Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel

United Nations

Public broadcasters comment

Public broadcasters from all four boycotting nations have made statements, with Spain’s broadcaster stating ““The situation in Gaza, despite the ceasefire and the approval of the peace process, and the use of the contest for political goals by Israel, make it increasingly difficult to keep Eurovision a neutral cultural event,” Irelands national broadcasting service, RTE stated that allowing Israel to compete « remains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza ». Dutch broadcaster Avrotros said that Israel’s participation in the competition « is no longer compatible with the responsibility we bear as a public broadcaster. » A final list of participating countries will be announced by Christmas.

Financial implications

The boycott risks damaging Eurovision’s reputation as a competition that acts outside of politics, but like the Olympics, countries are questioning whether inclusion in Eurovision should be a right or a privilege that can be lost. There is also the financial prospect – Eurovision is incredibly profitable for public broadcasters, at a time when public broadcasters are struggling across the globe. A boycott by some European countries will have implications for viewership for the boycotting countries at a time when many broadcasters are under financial pressure from government funding cuts and the advent of social media. Additionally, if Eurovision becomes politicized, the viewers could begin to boycott the competition, damaging profits for all broadcasters involved.

The Spain and Ireland boycott will be especially noticeable and should impact viewer ratings globally. Spain is one of the ‘Big Five’ – the five largest countries that contribute to the content, and Ireland shares the record for most Eurovision wins with seven. Eurovision 2026, the 70th instalment of the competition, is slated to run from May 12 to 16 in Vienna, Austria. It is unclear how many countries will be participating. Overshadowed by Israel’s controversial inclusion, Eurovision 2026 will also see the return of three countries – Bulgaria, Moldova and Romania after their brief absence due to financial or artistic reasons.

Venezuela increases troops by more than 5,500 amid US advances

The Venezuelan army reportedly swore in 5,600 new troops on Saturday in direct response to the United States ramping up military pressure in the Caribbean Sea. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called for a stepping-up of Venezuela’s military recruitment after the United States deployed a fleet of warships – including the world’s largest aircraft carrier – in the Caribbean Sea under the guise of ‘fighting drug trafficking’. American forces have carried out deadly strikes on at least 20 vessels near Venezuela and killed more than 80 people in the last four months.

The United States have accused Maduro of leading the Cartel of the Suns, which it declared a terrorist organization last month. Maduro maintains that the US aims to overthrow his government and seize the country’s oil reserves. In 2024, Nicolas Maduro was defeated in the polls, but refused to concede power, instead claiming that he had won the election – a claim disproven by his own government’s voting technology. There is a motive if Donald Trump does indeed want to oust Maduro. Most Western countries are not in support of Maduro’s election fraud, with international support for Maduro’s government coming from China, Russia, Iran, Turkey, Syria, and Cuba.

Venezuelan military power

Venezuela has the world’s 50th most powerful military according to GFP, with approximately 200,00 soldiers, and an additional 200,000 police officers. Over the last several weeks, the Trump administration has built up a fleet of warships near Venezuela, including the largest U.S. aircraft carrier – the USS Gerald R. Ford – as American forces continue to attack naval vessels suspected of drug trafficking. Colonel Gabriel Alejandro Rendon Vilchez told the press on Sunday that “Under no circumstances will we allow an invasion by an imperialist force,” referring to the United States.

Four months of naval air strikes

The US began initiating airstrikes on Venezuelan ships in the Caribbean Sea in September, under the guise of fighting narco-terrorism. Donald Trump, backed by Hegseth, outlined his mission to battle ‘maritime drug trafficking’ in Latin America after the first strike. That first strike came on September 2, when an American military vessel sank a 39-foot speedboat filled with “a considerable amount of cargo.” This initial strike was one of the more legitimate, with the vessel hailing from a known trafficking centre, and multiple sources supporting the US’s accusations of it being a criminal vessel. 11 people were killed in the first strike, according to Trump, all of them members of the gang Tren de Aragua.

If you’re working for a designated terrorist organization and you bring drugs to this country in a boat, we will find you, and we will sink you. Let there be no doubt about it. President Trump can and will take decisive military action as he sees fit to defend our nation’s interests. Let no country on earth doubt that for a moment.

Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth

Over the next six weeks, Trump carried out another four strikes, killing 16. There were drugs recovered in only one of the strikes. Venezuela has claimed that at least one of the boats attacked was a fishing vessel. Additionally, at least two of the victims have been confirmed as Colombian citizens without any attachment to the country of Venezuela, nor its organized crime groups. “These cartels are the Al Qaeda of the Western Hemisphere, using violence, murder and terrorism to impose their will, threaten our national security and poison our people,” Hegseth wrote.

Entering murky waters

It is unclear how the US will move forward with its fleet of ships in the Caribbean, but according to Trump on December 3, “[we are] going to start doing strikes on land, too, you know, the land is much easier, much easier,” During a speech Saturday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth claimed that Donald Trump could use force “as he see’s fit” in regards to the deadly airstrikes on ‘cartel’ vessels. In the same speech, Hegseth seemed to threaten the globe, stating, “If you’re working for a designated terrorist organization and you bring drugs to this country in a boat, we will find you, and we will sink you. Let there be no doubt about it. President Trump can and will take decisive military action as he sees fit to defend our nation’s interests. Let no country on earth doubt that for a moment.”

Human rights experts have claimed that Trump’s airstrikes are « unlawful under the law of the sea, » as the vessels were in international waters and posed no immediate violent threat to the US,” and that “Labelling everyone a terrorist does not make them a lawful target and enables states to side-step international law. » It’s been confirmed that at least three of the vessels sunk were indeed ships being used by drug cartels, but at least three of them were not.

Zelensky maintains that Ukraine will not cede land to Russia: report

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reconfirmed that Ukraine is not willing to cede land to Russia after almost four years of war. In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, starting the deadliest European war since World War II. Zelensky’s comments come as US President Donald Trump is pressuring Ukraine to concede territory to the invading Russia. On Tuesday, Donald Trump told the press that Russia has ‘the upper hand’ and that Ukraine needs to ‘play ball’ with the Kremlin, something that Ukraine is not willing to do.

Do we consider ceding any territories? According to the law we don’t have such right. According to Ukraine’s law, our constitution, international law, and to be frank, we don’t have a moral right either.

According to Zelensky, “Russia insists on us to give up territories,” but Ukraine, “[does not] want to give up anything,” Zelensky told reporters via WhatsApp after meetings with European leaders on Monday in hopes of rallying international support for Ukraine. At the meeting were UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The group met at Prime Minister Starmer’s home at 1 Downing Street in London. After the meeting, Zelensky, Starmer, and the other leaders called Kyiv’s European allies, urging them to keep up the pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The leaders all agreed that now is a critical moment and that we must continue to ramp up support to Ukraine and economic pressure on Putin to bring an end to this barbaric war,

-Kier Starmer

According to Macron, the session allowed the leaders “to continue joint work on the U.S. plan in order to complement it with European contributions, in close coordination with Ukraine.” Zelenskyy also met with Pope Leo XIV at Castle Gandolfo, a papal residence outside of Rome. Also at the meeting was Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. According to the Vatican, the Pope “reiterated the need for the continuation of dialogue and expressed his urgent desire that the current diplomatic initiatives bring about a just and lasting peace.” While the Pope has tried to remain neutral in the conflict, the Vatican has called for a ceasefire and urged Moscow – the attacking force – to make gestures to promote peace.

US pressure to concede land

Donald Trump, a vocal ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been pressuring Ukraine and Zelenskyy to concede to certain Russian demands, including some Ukrainian territory. The US government is pressuring Ukraine to surrender control over the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine – an area that is mostly occupied by Russian forces. Ukraine and its European allies have firmly resisted the idea of handing over land. According to Trump, conceding land is the moral thing for Ukraine to do, as “a lot of people are dying,” and that apparently multiple Ukrainian “lieutenants” and Zelenskyy’s “top people” agree with the U.S. administration.

“I give the people of Ukraine and the military of Ukraine tremendous credit for the, you know, bravery and for the fighting and all of that. But you know, at some point, size will win, generally.”

Trump also reiterated his wish for Ukraine to hold a presidential election, something it has not done since 2019 due to the martial law imposed by the government after Russia’s initial invasion in 2022. Zelesnkyy, who was elected in 2019, has now exceeded his five-year term in office, but still has an approval rating of almost 70% among Ukrainian citizens. That being said, 84% of Ukrainian voters believe that there is widespread corruption in the Ukrainian government, and nearly 50% of voters disapprove of the country’s leadership (outside of Zelenskyy).

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, at least 2 million people have been killed – mostly military personnel – and another million displaced from both sides, making it the most deadly conflict of the 21st century.

Trump threatens ‘severe tariffs’ on Canadian fertilizer in attempt to prop up American farmers

American farmers are struggling under Donald Trump, and the American president is now turning back to Canada as a means to a financial end. Trump claimed during a roundtable in Washington on Monday that Canadian fertilizer being exported south of the border could be hit with significant levies in the future as he attempts to aid American farmers who have been negatively impacted by months of trade uncertainty created by Trump. During the roundtable, Trump also announced a $12-billion aid package for farmers.

“This relief will provide much-needed certainty to farmers as they get this year’s harvest to market and look ahead to next year’s crops, and it’ll help them continue their efforts to lower food prices for American families,”

New tariffs on Canada

Trump was quoted on Monday, stating: “A lot of (fertilizer) does come in from Canada, and so we’ll end up putting very severe tariffs on that, if we have to, because that’s the way you want to bolster here.” Many US farms rely on potash fertilizer from Saskatchewan to add potassium to their soil. American purchases make up half of all fertilizer exports from Canada. When Trump imposed his 25% sweeping tariffs on all Canadian exports into the US, he was forced to lower the tariff on fertilizer to 10% after outcry from Republican farmers. The same farmers have publicly supported Trump’s tariffs despite their consequences.

According to Fertilizer Canada, “Imposing tariffs jeopardizes the deeply integrated, open trading relationship that is vital to North American agricultural producers,” and that the US “does not have sufficient reserves to meet domestic demand.” Russia is America’s second-largest source for potash fertilizer, but Canada accounts for 80% of America’s fertilizer imports. The last time Trump tried enforcing tariffs on fertilizer, the price of potash rose from US$303 per short ton to $348 between Jan. 3 and Feb. 28. The price hike impacted farmers across the U.S. who were preparing to plant in the spring.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford wants fertilizer companies to threaten to halt the sale of potash fertilizer to American companies, but Saskatchewan potash producer Nutrien has already announced plans to build a new export facility for global markets in the US, rather than in British Columbia.

Tariffs hurting Americans

Since Donald Trump began trade wars with all of Americas biggest trade partners, farmers have struggled to sell their crops, with China and other countries willing to pay less due to the hefty tariffs levied by Donald Trump, but the prospective aid will be ‘a drop in the bucket’ according to farmers effected by the tariffs, with soybean farmers being hit harder than most. “It’s just the stupidity of the whole situation that we’re in this mess. And why is China not upholding their end of the bargain? Why do we have to have this payment in the first place?” said John Bartman, a soybean farmer from Illinois.

Since Trump’s trade war with China began, American farmers have lost more than $12bn, with crop producers losing between $35 bn and $43bn on what they just harvested in 2025. Trump’s $12bn payout would put a maximum of $155,000 in the pocket of each individual farmer, which, according to farmers, is “roughly the same amount of money that China would have purchased in a normal year anyway”. China has purchased approximately 15% fewer soybeans from the US while increasing purchases from Argentina and Brazil. Argentina lowered its soybean tax against China in September to ensure the stability of soybean purchases.

Israel and Hamas to broker ‘second-phase’ of ceasefire

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel and Hamas are “very shortly expected to move into the second phase of the ceasefire,” contingent on Hamas releasing the remains of ‘the last’ hostage. Netanyahu spoke during a news conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, claiming the second phase of the ceasefire, which addresses the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, could begin as soon as the end of the month, but human rights experts remain skeptical of Israel’s dedication to a withdrawal of troops in Palestine.

A futile first phase

(Photo by Khames Alrefi/Anadolu via Getty Images)

While news of a potential withdrawal of Israel’s occupying forces from Palestine is a positive move for the civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, an important question remains: Has Israel observed the first phase? The answer is no. Since the ‘ceasefire’ was implemented on October 10, 2025, Israel has broken it more than 590 times, killing at least 360 Palestinians, and increasing the total death toll in Gaza to more than 70,000 – the vast majority of which are women and children. Under the first phase, signed by US President Donald Trump, Israel was supposed to halt its war on Gaza, a war that has been deemed a genocide by the UN, Amnesty International, and more than 70 independent countries across the globe.

“Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel”

-United Nations

In addition to the halting of violence, Israel was also required to begin allowing aid into Gaza, something the country has spent millions of dollars on blocking. According to the United Nations in November, “Israeli authorities have rejected more than 100 requests to bring relief materials into Gaza since the ceasefire began nearly a month ago.” It’s important to note that a significant portion of the blocked aid since October 10 has not been blocked by the Israeli government, but by Israeli citizens attempting to ensure the starvation of Palestinians in Gaza. While the Israeli government is not blocking aid as it was before the ceasefire was signed, it is still refusing to enforce rules protecting aid trucks going to Palestine.

“Israel’s war on Gaza has not ended… [Hamas] will be disarmed”

-Benjamin Netanyahu

Israel is still limiting the amount of aid allowed into Gaza, even if it has stopped explicitly blocking it. According to Dr Munir al-Bursh, the director general of Gaza’s Ministry of Health, “We are facing a situation in which 54 percent of essential medicines are unavailable, and 40 percent of the drugs for surgeries and emergency care – the very medications we rely on to treat the wounded – are missing,” and according to journalist in Gaza, Hind Khoudary, “at least 600 trucks should be entering the Gaza Strip every single day, but what is entering is very little.”

‘Israel has committed genocide.’

Israel’s ‘war’ on Gaza has been deemed a genocide by the United Nations, Amnesty International, Médecins du Monde, Doctors without Borders and more than 70 independent countries across the globe. According to South African apartheid experts, Israel has subjected the country of Palestine to a vicious apartheid system since the 1940s. South Africa filed a case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2023.

“We South Africans know what apartheid looks like — we have lived through it, suffered and died under it. We cannot remain silent and watch as apartheid is perpetrated against others.”

-UN representative of South Africa

Reports estimate 70 per cent of the 70,000 dead in Gaza were civilians, 60 per cent were women, children, or the elderly. There have been 200,000 people injured since October 7, 2021, and 60 percent of Palestinians have now lost at least one family member. Gaza has the most amputated children per capita in the world. More than 250 journalists and at least 250 health care workers have been killed by Israel in the last three years, making it the most deadly conflict for journalists in human history. The number of journalists killed in this conflict surpasses the death tolls in both World Wars, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan combined, according to the United Nations.

Thailand launches airstrikes at Cambodia after deadly border skirmish

Thailand launched air strikes on neighboring country Cambodia on Monday, according to the Thai army. The strike came just hours after a border skirmish in Ubon Ratchathani province became deadly early Monday morning, with both sides blaming each other for its happening. One Thai soldier was killed in the scuffle. Thai army spokesman Winthai Suvaree said in a statement, “the Army received reports that Thai soldiers were attacked with supporting fire weapons, resulting in one soldier killed and four wounded.”,

Suvaree claimed that Cambodian forces fired on the Thai first, but the Cambodian defence ministry spokeswoman Maly Socheata said that the Thai forces had launched an attack on the Cambodian troops in the border provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey even before the incident in Ubon Ratchathani. According to Socheata, Thai forces “[fired] multiple shots with tanks at Tamone Thom temple” and other areas near Preah Vihear temple. Tamone Thom and Preah Vihear are ancient temples, built in the 11th century; they’re both estimated to be 1000 years old, and Preah Vihear was declared a world heritage site in 2008. The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutes destruction of cultural heritage as a war crime.

Clashes on the border

Early Monday morning, thousands of people on the Thailand-Cambodia border were displaced by fresh fighting that marked historic tensions between the neighboring nations. Four Cambodian civilians and one Thai soldier were killed in the firefight. This is the most deadly skirmish between Thailand and Cambodia since July, where more than 40 people were killed over five days of military violence. Thailand and Cambodia signed a peace deal after the battles in July. Monday’s scuffle was the first time the countries have tested the deal.

In response to the clash at the border, Thailand dispatched air strikes to multiple Cambodian military targets, and according to Thai army spokesman Winthai Suvaree, Thailand has begun “using aircraft to strike military targets in several areas” in attempts to suppress Cambodian forces. Cambodia has not retaliated to any of Thailand’s additional attacks, and according to Socheata, the country does not plan on responding with military action.

Thailand’s Army said in a statement that more than 35,000 people in Thailand have been evacuated from areas along the border with Cambodia since the renewed fighting. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the country “never wished to see violence,” but will “not allow the violation of its sovereignty.” Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow told the media that Thailand will continue military action “until we feel that sovereignty and territorial integrity are not challenged.” Cambodia remains publicly committed to supporting the ceasefire in effect. According to Thailand’s military, they began evacuating Thai citizens from border towns on Sunday. Reportedly, nearly 400,000 people have been evacuated to temporary shelters.

Cambodia and Thai military power

Thailand’s military is significantly larger than Cambodia’s, with Thailand boasting an annual budget of almost $7bn USD and more than 360,000 military personnel. Cambodia’s military operates with an annual budget of $1bn USD, and carries just under 125,000 total personnel. The stark difference in these nations’ military capabilities comes from the sky. Thailand owns more than 120 operational fighter aircraft, while Cambodia doesn’t have any. It’s no surprise that Cambodia remains dedicated to upholding the ceasefire, while Thailand appears to be willing to continue offensive aggression.

The governments of Japan and Malaysia have commented on the attacks, with Japan’s Foreign Ministry expressing “deep concern over the situation between the kingdom of Thailand and the kingdom of Cambodia.” The statement continued to urge “both countries to observe the ceasefire agreement, exercise maximum restraint, and seek a peaceful resolution through dialogue.” Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also commented on the incident, stating that ” both sides must promptly consult existing mechanisms” in order to “prevent the situation from escalating along the border.”

Canadian government to announce new ‘fast track’ system for permanent residency for 5,000 foreign doctors

While more than 6 million Canadians live without a family doctor, the government of Canada is finally making strides to increase the number of physicians in Canada. On Monday, December 8, Ottawa announced a new “express entry” category for foreign-trained physicians in an effort to address health workforce challenges in Canada. Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Lena Metlege Diab said in a press conference, “We’ve seen the strain in our emergency rooms, we hear it from families waiting for a doctor, and we feel it from the front-line staff who are stretched thin,”

“We’ve heard a clear message from patients, provinces and the medical community, we need more hands on deck,”

The new measures target internationally trained doctors with at least one year of Canadian work experience gained within the last three years, meaning only doctors who have already passed their Canadian equivalency exams will be able to benefit from this new program. a press release from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said “We’re giving these doctors a clear pathway to permanent residence in Canada to fill critical health workforce gaps, while helping support reliable care and a stable health system for Canadians,” Per a 2025 CBC investigation, there are currently an estimated 5,000 foreign-trained doctors in Canada, the vast majority of which are not practicing medicine in Canada due to restrictions on internationally trained physicians (ITPs). According to CMA president Dr. Margot Burnell, there are actually « more than 13,000 internationally trained physicians in Canada not working in their field. »

Holes in healthcare

WALKERTON, ON- JANUARY 15 – Hundreds of people line up outside the Walkerton Legion Hall on a cold and snowy day to sign up for a family doctor that will be opening a practice in Walkerton. Steve Russell/Toronto Star (Steve Russell/Toronto Star via Getty Images)

According to a 2025 investigation from Dr. Tara Kiran along with the Canadian Medical Association, there are currently 5.9 million Canadians who do not have a primary care physician (family doctor), CMA president Dr. Burnell state in the report, “These findings confirm what physicians and patients across Canada are experiencing daily,” Dr. Burnell mentioned how in 2022, there were 6.5 million Canadians without a primary care physician, and, “while we’ve made progress, too many Canadians still face unacceptable barriers to primary care. We can do better. We know the solutions. Access to care for all Canadians is a realistic and achievable goal now.”

While the number of Canadians without a primary care physician has dropped from 6.5 million to 5.9 million since 2022, 5.9 million people still represent almost 15 per cent of the country, meaning 3 in every 20 Canadians don’t have a family doctor. While Northern communities struggle with finding full-time physicians to move to remote areas of the country, populated areas of the country are also experiencing a shortage in medical staff. Reportedly, only two-thirds of qualified physicians in British Columbia are practicing medicine, leading to some of the longest ER wait times in the country – even in highly populated areas like Victoria, BC (population of 91,000). It’s estimated that almost 30 per cent of BC residents do not have a primary care physician – a total of nearly 700,000 Canadians. Another example is the border city of Sarnia, Ontario, with a population of almost 80,000, of which approximately 10,000 lack a primary care physician.

We want B.C. to be a place where health care is always there for you, which is why we’re taking action to hire more family doctors and health professionals than ever before, We’re starting to see some good results, but there’s a lot more we need to do. We can’t afford to slash health-care budgets when we need to be hiring even more doctors and nurses so B.C. families get the care they need when they need it.

-BC Premier David Eby.

Health care experts stress that this program is a step in the right direction, but the program will not fix all of Canada’s healthcare problems, with Maggie Chi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health stating: “Attracting skilled health professionals is essential to addressing Canada’s health workforce shortages. Increasing the number of qualified physicians with the expertise our health care system needs will ensure people across the country receive timely, high-quality care. By working closely with provinces and territories, we are tackling workforce challenges and strengthening the health care system so Canadians receive the care they need, when they need it.”

Man arrested in India in connection to Surrey, B.C. café shootings

A man has been arrested in Indian in connection with a series of shooting incidents at Kap’s Café in Surrey, B.C.

In a massive blow to organised crime syndicates, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested Bandhu Maan Singh Sekhon the key strategist responsible for planning, executing and providing logistics support for firing at Kap’s Café in Canada.

-Statement from Delhi Police

Kap’s Café, owned by Bollywood star Kapil Sharma, has been shot at three separate times in 2025, once in July, once in August, and then for a third time in October.

Police said the building ended up with multiple bullet holes due to the attacks, but that no staff members or customers had been injured. All three attacks happened between the hours of 2 AM and 5 AM.

Arrest made in India

On November 24, Delhi Police confirmed that Bandhu Maan Singh Sekhon had been arrested in connection with the attacks on Sharma’s café.

The police statement claimed that Sekhon was “the key strategist responsible for planning, executing and providing logistics support for firing at Kap’s Café in Canada.”

Police did clarify that other men committed the physical shootings, and that Sekhon was just the mind behind the plan.

Delhi Police said Sekhon fled to India on Aug. 23 following a crackdown by Surrey police.

Acting on crucial intelligence regarding the presence of a prime accused in Punjab related to the Kap’s Café (Kapil Sharma’s Café in Canada) firing conspiracy, the team of Crime Branch immediately came into action,

Apparently, Sekhon was also wanted in connection with a “high-profile international arms trafficking case.”

The investigation into the arms trafficking case found eight foreign-made semi-automatic pistols and 84 live cartridges, one of which was sold to Sekhon.

“After apprehension, during sustained interrogation, he not only disclosed about receiving illegal weapon which was subsequently recovered from his car (semi-automatic pistol, PX-3, made in China) but also his active role in series of firing at Kap’s café in Surrey, Canada,”

Gang connections in Canada

Delhi Police confirmed that Sekhon initially travelled to Canada on Sept. 13, 2023, on an employment visa and found work in Brampton, Ontario.

It was in Brampton that Sekhon reportedly got involved with “members of the Goldy Dhillon gang” and joined the affiliation shortly after.

Sekhon was arrested in Canada for serious offences, including conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, careless handling of a firearm, possession of property obtained by crime and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number.

Who is Bandhu Maan Singh Sekhon?

Bandhu Maan Singh Sekhon (28) has a bachelor’s and master’s in computer science. His dream in Canada was to open a used car dealership. Unfortunately, when looking for financial partners, he came into contact with gangster-turned-terrorist Harry Chatha.

It was with Chatha’s support that Sekhon made his first extortion call, prompting a police report to be filed, and Sekhon investigated.

Sekhon soon became a full-time employee of Chatha’s. When Chatha returned to India, Sekhon was left as one of the men in charge of his illegal operations in Canada, primarily the sale of illegal firearms.

Sekhon used his Instagram to advertise his products. His profile amassed almost 7 thousand followers and contains dozens of photos and videos of Sekhon showcasing illegal products.

Sekhons’ Instagram bio contains the quote “you only live once, but if you do it right… once is enough #786,” a stark contrast to the moral implications of his crimes.
