Le Cachemire, région déjà marquée par plus de sept décennies de tensions, vient de replonger brutalement dans le conflit.
En deux semaines à peine, l’attaque meurtrière du 22 avril qui a visé un bus de touristes à Pahalgam, une station touristique populaire située dans la région du Cachemire indien, a ravivé les tensions historiques entre l’Inde et le Pakistan.
La réaction de New Delhi a été rapide: l’Inde a lancé l’opération militaire «Sindoor», ciblant des sites qualifiés de «terroristes» situés au Pakistan et dans le Cachemire contrôlé par Islamabad.
Cette série de frappes, décrites comme «ciblées et non escalatoires» par les autorités indiennes, a été perçue par le Pakistan comme une agression pure et simple.
Depuis lors, les échanges de tirs, les pertes humaines et les discours menaçants se sont intensifiés des deux côtés de la ligne de contrôle. D’après Islamabad, le Pakistan déplore 26 morts et 46 blessés. L’Inde, de son côté, affirme que 15 civils ont été tués et 43 blessés par des tirs d’artillerie pakistanais.
Alors que, selon The Guardian, le ministre indien de la Défense, Rajnath Singh, a salué l’opération en proclamant «Victoire à Mère Inde», le Premier ministre pakistanais, Shehbaz Sharif, a dénoncé ces frappes comme un «acte de guerre». Face à cette montée des tensions, la communauté internationale redoute une détérioration rapide de la situation pouvant déboucher sur une crise majeure.
Selon plusieurs observateurs, la peur d’un affrontement militaire majeur entre ces deux puissances nucléaires n’a jamais été aussi forte.
