The St. Louis Blues appear to have started a trend in 2024, having tabled offer sheets for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway, via the Edmonton Oilers. Should teams decide to make a move of this magnitude again this year, several candidates to receive an offer would stand out. Here are 10 compensated free agents who could receive an offer sheet in 2025.
Evan Bouchard
The Oilers' ultra-offensive defenseman could be the subject of a hostile offer sheet this summer, if another evil GM decides to get Stan Bowman in trouble again, as he did last year with Broberg and Holloway. at 25 years of age, Bouchard will probably be asking his team for the moon, having amassed 82 and 67 points, respectively, over the past two years.
Gabe Vilardi
Should a team decide to make a splash at the RFAs for a 6'3, 216 lb. center, Vilardi is the ideal candidate. the Jets will do everything in their power to keep him, but considering his attractive profile, Winnipeg shouldn't be in denial about signing him. aged 25, Vilardi amassed 61 points in 71 games this year.
Noah Dobson
Noah Dobson's future doesn't seem to be set in stone on Long Island. at 25 years of age, the former QMJHLer is likely to be a player in demand, if he makes it to July 1 without a contract in his pocket. that could cost the Islanders dearly. He put 39 points on the scoreboard in 24-25, including 10 goals, and 70 points the previous year.
J.J. Peterka
If there's one positive thing about the Buffalo Sabres, it's J.J. Peterka. The young German has been a real force for his team this season, racking up 68 points, including 27 goals, in 77 games at the age of 23. Watch out for piranhas in search of an offer sheet!
Luke Hughes
The youngest of the Hughes brothers is fast becoming one of the NHL's best young offensive defensemen, at just 21 years of age. With two career 40+ point campaigns already under his belt, some teams may try to lure him away from the Devils with a hostile offer sheet.
Matthew Knies
Expect changes in Toronto this summer, including the potential departure of Mitch Marner and perhaps even John Tavares. That said, the Leafs will have to be careful with the picks they place, as Knies could appeal to many GMs on the free agent market. the 22-year-old American scored 29 goals this season, for a total of 58 points in 78 games. As a power forward, his profile could force some to table an offer sheet.
Mason McTavish
The third overall pick in the 2021 draft had the best offensive year of his career, with 52 points in 76 games. He could blossom at any time, so the Ducks will have to be on their guard, as a salty offer sheet is so quick to arrive, especially since quality young centers are in demand.
Bowen Byram
Like Peterka, Byram was a bright spot in the Sabres' campaign, resulting in 38 points and a +11 rating. The 23-year-old could be of interest to an organization looking for a player capable of playing a lot of minutes, while being reliable defensively.
Morgan Geekie
The Boston Bruins are embarking on a rebuilding process, and Geekie is likely to be part of the long-term solution, unless a team decides to play spoilsport with an offer sheet. at 25, Geekie is entering his prime, having scored 33 goals in 24-25.
Marco Rossi
at 23, the Austrian already has over 100 career points, having racked up 60 in 24-25 with the Wild. Could he be the solution for a team at center, if Minnesota is slow to give him a new deal? We'll find out by July!
