PM of Alberta is asking Trump to end tariffs… to benefit Pierre Poilievre

An interview of Danielle Smith with the far-right American media Breitbart embarrasses the conservatives and raises many questions about their true loyalty to Canada and Canadians in the context of the trade conflict with the United States.

Danielle Smith, the Premier of Alberta, is facing intense criticism after making controversial remarks during an interview with the far-right American media outlet Breitbart.

She claimed to have asked the Trump administration to suspend tariffs against Canada until after the elections, because the tariffs: «seem to be benefiting the Liberals right now».

Her comments quickly triggered a wave of criticism, including accusations accusing her of asking the United States to interfere in Canadian elections.

These allegations were firmly denied by her spokesperson Sam Blackett, according to CBC News.

Would she have asked the United States to suspend tariffs if it had benefited, in her mind, the conservatives of Poilievre rather than the liberals?

But the question certainly deserves an answer from Alberta's premier, as many wonder if her support is truly going to Canadians.

Since the start of the trade war with Trump in 2025, the popularity of the liberals has increased significantly. Their management of the crisis, focused on protecting Canadian interests and strengthening international relations, has enhanced their image of leadership and defense of citizens in the face of adversity.

With the departure of Justin Trudeau and the arrival of Marc Carney, the new liberal leader, the latter benefits from growing popularity thanks to his international experience and his reputation as an economic expert.

The elections were triggered last Sunday, with a vote scheduled for April 28. The Liberals, taking advantage of a growing popularity, are now in a good position, after the situation seemed completely favorable to the Conservatives a few months ago.

Pierre Poilievre, often nicknamed «Maple MAGA» because of his tendency to take almost word for word the policies, slogans and attacks on the left of Trump, suddenly finds himself in the position of having to change his image.

This comes as Trump's actions, since his return to the White House, put American democracy in jeopardy, sliding towards an authoritarian regime, as well as long-term relations with Canada.
