His decision
A few days before the interview, Trump had announced that he would agree to talk to The Atlantic. Trump tried to justify his decision, even though the media had revealed, a few weeks earlier, the "Signalgate" scandal, a leak of information from a confidential discussion group involving Pete Hegseth and Vice President J.D. Vance, among others, about an imminent military operation.

He says he agreed to the interview to see if The Atlantic could be «truthful». For its part, The Atlantic describes Trump as having achieved one of the «most remarkable comebacks in political history» and believes he can now be considered «the most consequential American leader of the 21st century».
