From the Oval Office of the White House, Donald Trump said he was honored to welcome Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, recalling that the latter had won, in his words, «a very big election» in Canada a few days earlier.
Trump takes some of the credit
Trump then took some of the credit for Carney's victory, declaring that he thought he was «the greatest thing that happened to him»
Carney's party
Trump then said Carney's party, previously led by Justin Trudeau, was «losing by a lot» before Carney ended up winning the election.

Trump went on to say that he had followed the Canadian election with great interest, adding that in his eyes, Canada had chosen: «a very talented person and very good person».

The weeks ahead
Big discussions between the two leaders are now expected in the coming weeks, particularly on the issue of tariffs. However, this was a successful first test for Mark Carney in an Oval Office that has now become hostile to his guests.
