  • Dua Lipa is reportedly suing Samsung.
  • She is seeking substantial damages.
  • Samsung maintains that it acted through a partner.
  • The case may still see further legal developments.

Pop star Dua Lipa has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Samsung, alleging that the company used her image without her consent.

According to a complaint filed on Thursday, May 8, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and obtained by PEOPLE, the singer accuses Samsung of reproducing a copyrighted behind-the-scenes photo of her on television packaging distributed throughout the United States.

“Ms. Lipa’s likeness was prominently used in a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product, without her knowledge, consent, or any right of review, control, or influence,” the complaint states. “Ms. Lipa did not authorize and would never have authorized this use.”

The complaint also argues that the use of this image falsely suggests that Dua Lipa endorses the product or has a connection to it, which could have influenced consumers to purchase the television due to the singer’s presence on the packaging.

According to court documents, the photo at the center of the dispute is titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024” and is officially registered with the United States Copyright Office.

The artist is therefore seeking at least $15 million in damages, in addition to the profits generated by sales of the televisions featuring this image.

A Long-Running Legal Battle

According to the complaint, this saga has been ongoing since June 2025. Indeed, the singer had identified the infringement and violation of her right of publicity, and her representatives subsequently sent cease-and-desist letters to Samsung. Despite these warnings, the company continued to use the image.

“Samsung’s response was dismissive and insensitive,” the complaint alleges, adding that the products “are still on the market to this day.”

The singer’s lawyers argue that Samsung knowingly used Dua Lipa’s fame and popularity to promote the sale of its televisions.

There are also testimonials from fans who bought the product because the singer was featured on the box.

“I wasn’t even planning on buying a TV, but I saw the box and couldn’t resist,” reads a message cited in the complaint. “I’ve always said that if you want to sell something, just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it,” says another testimonial.

Samsung’s Response

On Monday, May 11, a Samsung spokesperson addressed the matter in a statement sent to PEOPLE.

“Ms. Lipa’s image was used in 2025 to illustrate third-party content available on Samsung TVs. It was initially provided by a content partner for our free streaming service, Samsung TV Plus,” the spokesperson stated.

“The image was used only after receiving formal assurance from the content partner that the necessary permissions had been obtained, including for product packaging sold in stores. Given this assurance, we refute any allegation of intentional misuse. (…) Samsung has great respect for Ms. Lipa and for the intellectual property of all artists. We have actively sought and remain open to a constructive solution with Ms. Lipa’s team,” the statement continues.

This is a case that could still evolve in the coming months, as both parties appear to be holding firm to their positions and potential discussions or legal developments could clarify the next steps in this matter.
