Logan Mailloux knocks down Kirby Dach’s little brother

Logan Mailloux really seems to have found his niche with the St. Louis Blues. There’s a better chance of him playing in the NHL this year with the Blues than with the Montreal Canadiens, and his head coach is really impressed with his work in practice so far, giving him plenty of points for making the big club. His team-mates are too, and he’s playing good hockey so far and earning points in different ways. Last night, he found another way to get points from his coach: first, Mailloux gave Chicago Blackhawks player Sam Lafferty a good check, which created a scrum. Finally, Colton Dach, Kirby Dach’s little brother, decided to come to his teammate’s defense by throwing down the gloves against Mailloux. Quite an interesting fight.

[content-ads]There was no dominance on either side. The two big guys exchanged a few good punches, but in the end it was the former Habs defenseman (or Laval Rocket defenseman, rather) who had the upper hand by toppling Dach. Not only is Mailloux showing great things offensively at practice in Saint-Louis, but he’s playing a physical, imposing game every time he’s on the ice. In two pre-season games, Mailloux has handed out five checks and is eating up big minutes, and he seems to have Jim Montgomery’s confidence already. If Mailloux is more reliable without the puck and creates fewer turnovers, he could certainly become an imposing and very useful right-handed defenseman in the big league. He has the tools to succeed in the NHL, but he absolutely must improve his defensive game if he is to achieve more. Let’s see what the Blues have in store for him this season: there’s definitely room on the right flank of the Blues’ defensive brigade.

– Interesting.

– Indeed, it’s not all about points in the NHL.

Canadiens put five players in waivers

On Sunday afternoon, the Canadiens de Montréal announced that three forwards and two defensemen – Sean Farrell, Lucas Condotta, Alex Belzile, Marc Del Gaizo and Nathan Clurman – will be subject to a waivers process before they can join the Laval Rocket.

Following last night’s wave of cuts, 34 players remained with the Canadiens. But after this wave of waivers, only 29 remain.More details to come…

Here’s how the battle for the 12th forward position is shaping up

Last night, following the Montreal Rocket Canadien’s 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Canadiens announced several cuts from their training camp.25 players were cut from the camp, including a certain Joshua Roy, whose future in the Habs organization is highly doubtful. This leaves 34 players in the Canadiens’ training camp, which means that, normally, there are still 11 players to be cut to meet the maximum roster of 23.

With two pre-season games left on the schedule, the battle for a spot on the Canadiens’ roster will intensify, especially on the forward line. In fact, as things stand, the battle for the remaining forward spots (12th, 13th and 14th forwards) will be hotly contested. In addition to the 11 forwards guaranteed to make the team, there are eight forwards still in contention at training camp.

Of course, Alex Belzile, Lucas Condotta and Sean Farrell aren’t really in the running, and are expected to join the Laval Rocket in the next few days, after going through the waivers. The Habs will want to send them to the waivers at an opportune time (especially in the case of Farrell) to minimize the chances of them being claimed. That leaves us with five forwards, namely Owen Beck, Samuel Blais, Oliver Kapanen, Joe Veleno and Florian Xhekaj.

Here’s the current state of play.

[content-ads] If the Canadiens decide to go with a 14-forward lineup, that is, with two extra players, that means three of those five guys will make the club. Samuel Blais will definitely be one of the club’s extra forwards, given that he’s a veteran, and seeing him sitting in the stands for several games doesn’t hurt the team’s future.

As for Owen Beck and Florian Xhekaj, they’re both having a good camp, but I think the ideal would be to see them return to Laval for another season and play as much as possible. Not making the club this year won’t hurt their development, and it wouldn’t be cued as a failure, when they can continue to develop under Pascal Vincent.

[content-ads] So now we come to the last two candidates, the most serious as far as I’m concerned, namely Joe Veleno and Oliver Kapanen. Both forwards played well yesterday against the Maple leafs, but Veleno really stood out with a very solid performance. The Montrealer has proved that he deserves his place with the Habs, and I believe that right now, even if Kapanen is playing some good hockey too, he’s the frontrunner to get the 12ᵉ forward job.

In short, if the Canadiens keep 14 forwards in Montreal, I think Veleno, Kapanen and Blais will be the chosen ones, while it would simply remain to determine whether Kapanen or Veleno will be in uniform for the first game of the season. spacer title=’En Rafale’] – Heineman on the Islanders:

Lane Hutson: Leafs players had high praise for him last night

Did you watch yesterday’s game against the Leafs? If so, you must have seen the Lane Hutson Show.Seriously, the young Montreal Canadiens defenseman never ceases to amaze and astound us. Once again last night, he demonstrated the full extent of his talent, with something interesting happening every time he touched the puck.

As soon as he gets possession of the puck, you’re on the edge of your seat, because you know he’s going to make a great play, combining agility, deke, vision and a perfect pass. And on top of all that, Hutson proved yesterday that he can score, so he’s definitely been working on his shot this summer.

[content-ads] In short, Hutson is simply impressive, and more and more players are realizing it.

This was also the case for several Leafs players who faced Hutson last night, as Anthony Stolarz (Leafs goalie), Nicolas Roy and Dakota Joshua all had high praise for #48 of the Habs after the game.

[content-ads] Indeed, their comments are all very clear, as they all explain that Hutson is a very difficult player to read and follow on the ice.

In short, Roy and Joshua, who are new to the Leafs, got to know Lane Hutson very well, while Stolarz saw nothing but fire in the Habs defenseman’s goal.

Of course, it was only a preseason game, but all the same, it shows us once again how Hutson has only one speed, and it’s always at maximum, whatever the occasion. It’s amazing how Hutson is able to control a game on his own, as if he’s playing a completely different game to everyone else. He’s in his own zone and in his own league, which forces his opponents to always be ready.

Kypreos

It’s no small thing to compare the Habs’ defenseman to the two best defensemen in the entire NHL.

In short, the Canadiens are really lucky to have Hutson on their team, and seriously, with performances like yesterday’s, there’s no reason to be worried about a potential second-year jinx. I have no doubt that Hutson will be even better than last season. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – What a nice tribute.

👏🏻

– Bravo!

– Too bad.

A standing ovation and push-ups in front of his goal: Fleury’s last match is unforgettable

While the Canadiens were defeating the Maple Leafs in Toronto, a historic evening was unfolding in Pittsburgh, as Marc-André Fleury played his final career game for the Penguins. For the last time, Fleury donned the Penguins uniform for an NHL game, providing us with some incredible images, including one of the Québécois goaltender reunited with his former teammates.

And for many other reasons, it was an unforgettable (preparatory) game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. First and foremost, Fleury was perfect in this game, turning aside all eight shots in 20 minutes of ice time to help his team win 4-1, the last victory of his career.

[content-ads] In addition to the victory, Marc-Andre Fleury’s full 20 minutes in front of the Penguins’ cage were magical. The fans responded, and they made sure to thank and give all the love in the world to their former goaltender, who will have won three Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh.

Penguins fans are clearly sad to see Fleury retire, so they made their wish heard – to see Fleury play another season.

[content-ads] After regular time, both teams had a short shootout, where Fleury took time to entertain the crowd by kissing his post and doing a few push-ups in front of his net.

Please note that Luca Del Belluz is the latest player to score a goal on Marc-André Fleury.

The Blue Jackets’ forward noted after the game that he was happy to have scored, but felt he had somehow ruined the party for Fleury[content-ads] In the end, Fleury received a monster ovation after the game, while the Blue Jackets also stayed to honor the Québécois goaltender.

And finally, I’ll leave you with Fleury’s entire post-game statement to the media.

[spacer title=’En Rafale’] – Please note.

– For those interested,

– Beautiful to see.

Joe Veleno shows he deserves his place with the Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens got their revenge last night against the Toronto Maple Leafs , winning 4-2 at Scotiabank Arena.Although it was a completely different line-up (except for Marc Del Gaizo) that faced the Leafs on Thursday in a 7-2 loss, it’s a very good thing the Canadiens bounced back.

We were treated to a much better game than Thursday, when all the Habs players had a good game against the Leafs’ A team. Welcome to preseason, where this kind of situation is fairly recurrent.

On Thursday, the Leafs’ B-team, virtually the Marlies, beat a Habs made up of its first two trios, and last night, a team that looked a lot like the Rocket beat the Leafs’ A-team.

In short, it gave us a really good look at the Habs’ depth players, those fighting for the positions of 12ᵉ and 13th forwards in Montreal. Several guys stood out, but on offense, if there’s one who stood out, it’s Joe Veleno.

[content-ads] The Montrealer may not have gotten a point last night, but he played a damn good game, so Veleno understood the urgency of the situation, when he HAD to have a big game if he hoped to stay in the running for a spot with the Habs.

The Habs’ #90 was everywhere on the ice, and he stood out on many levels, as evidenced by his four shots on goal, two body checks and 69% (9 in 13) efficiency in the face-off circle.

It’s a mission accomplished for Veleno, because now everyone in Montreal is talking about him, which is a very good sign for the future.

Lane Hutson himself praised Veleno’s work, saying he was a great and exciting addition to the team, and that he had a very unique talent.

In short, Veleno’s calling card is currently excellent, and he has a very good chance of making the team [content-ads] But aside from Veleno, what else do I take away from the Habs’ 4-2 win over the Leafs?1. Lane Hutson is simply too good. The Habs defenseman was electrifying once again last night, when every time he touched the puck, you wanted to get out of your seat because something was happening. It’s amazing how good and dominant Hutson is, no matter what the context.

He got five shots on goal in the game, which is the highest total among Habs players.

In short, we’re really lucky to have him in Montreal [content-ads]2. Oliver Kapanen continues his good work in silence. He’ll never be the flashiest player, but I still like Kapanen’s game. He makes good decisions, he makes good plays and he’s very responsible, while he plays well on 200 feet. He wins important face-offs, and he uses his stick very well to cut plays. In short, nothing revolutionary, but good hockey in general, and that’s what could land him a job with the Canadiens.3. Kaapo Kahkonen got the job done. The Finnish goaltender had no choice but to have a good outing last night, if he wanted to stay in the race for Samuel Montembeault’s second spot. He’d allowed a bad goal earlier in the week, while Jakub Dobes had been perfect. Well, with yesterday’s performance, Kahkonen bought himself another chance to make his mark, and who knows, maybe dislodge Dobes. [content-ads]4. Samuel Blais is doing his jobwell .The Québécois is doing whatever it takes to secure the 13th forward spot, and the way he’s playing, with toughness and intensity, he’ll earn it.5. I want to give Alex Belzile some love . We really saw a lot of him last night, when he was really good throughout the game. At 34, he’s not going to get a job in Montreal, but still, you have to note how much the guy gives of himself and how much he deserves to play in the NHL.

But he’s going to help the young guys in Laval, and he’ll be very good for their development. In closing, I liked the play of Owen Beck, Sean Farrell, Alex Carrier, Jayden Struble and Arber Xhekaj. They all did well. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – He’s simply dominant. The Habs prospect has four goals and two assists in three games.

– Wow.

– C’est clair ça fait très mal.

– Nice win for Montreal CF, against a team that had won its last nine MLS games.

– A fine goal for Koné.

Joshua Roy sold to the Rocket: the Canadiens announce 25 cuts

Joshua Roy was unable to convince the Canadiens to keep him up, and following tonight’s game in Toronto, the Canadiens announced that 24 players would be heading to Laval. As for Vinzenz Rohrer, he’s heading back to Europe,so you’ll understand that Roy is one of the guys cut.

Despite a big summer of practice, Roy wasn’t able to stand out at camp. History seems to be repeating itself in the case of the Québécois forward, and now more than ever, we’re wondering if his future lies elsewhere. It’s worth noting that prospects like Florian Xhekaj, Oliver Kapanen and Owen Beck are still up there right now. That Xhekaj is still there speaks volumes about his camp. content-ads]

Jacob Fowler has also been cut, but that’s no surprise. Jakub Dobes should be the club’s #2 goalie, but Kaapo Kahkonen is the guy fighting for a spot, and it makes sense to see guys get cut before the Canadiens head to Quebec City. Going on the road with too many guys isn’t ideal.Details to come…

This time, it’s the Habs’ secondary team that gets the better of the Leafs’ stars

After a tough loss earlier in the week, the Habs were back in action against the Toronto Maple Leafs, this time in Toronto. Here are the lineups:

Midway through the first period, the Montreal attack got going.

After a Zach Bolduc shot was not controlled by Anthony Stolarz, Alexandre Carrier fed Alex Newhook, who then found the back of the net.

In the second period, on the powerplay, the second unit doubled their lead. Well positioned at the mouth, Riley Kidney took a return pass to score his first goal of the prep schedule.

That two-goal lead didn’t last long, as minutes later John Tavares scored. The goal was scored on the powerplay.

Montreal was also opportunistic on the powerplay. Lane Hutson, who had an excellent game (who’d have thought it?), fired a wrist shot past Stolarz [content-ads]

In the third period, Sean Farrell gave Toronto a sledgehammer blow. Assisted by Alex Belzile, he gave the visitors a three-goal lead.

Montreal may have lost to the Leafs’ C-team at the Bell Centre on Thursday, but today it was the Montreal C-team’s turn to beat the Toronto stars. We can breathe a sigh of relief. Most importantly, no player left the game due to injury.Final score: 4-2. Toronto closed the gap late in the game, but it was too little too late, and the Canadiens return to action on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators in Quebec City. We can expect several cuts in the coming hours/days. spacer title=’Prolongation’] – We’ve found the team’s fourth center, maybe even third…

– The Calder Trophy winner dominated.

– Many impressed tonight.

– He left the game.

Fleury, Crosby, Malkin and Letang reunited for the last time for one game

We’ve known it for a long time now, but Marc-André Fleury is back in uniform after spending the first 13 seasons of his career there. If some teams want to bring him out of retirement, that’s not the Penguins’ plan. The Penguins’ plan, on the heels of what promises to be a difficult season, is to give fans a gift by reuniting Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Fleury for one last time in a professional game.

The four amigos struck a pose before their warm-up game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

It’s a legendary photo and perhaps (already) the NHL photo of the year.

The four teammates took a similar photo not so long ago, but the goalie wasn’t in the yellow-and-black uniform.

(Credit: Google)

[content-ads] In anticipation of Fleury’s last professional game (unless the teams convince him not to hang up his skates for good), it was his kids who shouted “It’s the hockey night in Pittsburgh”. Fleury, smiling, saw it all from the bench. The Québécois will finish the game, and I dare imagine there will be quite a celebration afterwards. It’s not the game with the highest stakes, we agree, but I dare believe that Pittsburgh would like to win. The Penguins were one of the greatest dynasties of the 19th century (so far). There’s something special about seeing the four biggest pieces of this prestigious organization reunited just over eight years after their last Stanley Cup [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Welcome to the QMJHL.

– Ah well.

– What an exit.

Ivan Demidov: the boys are already preparing to face him as if he were Nikita Kucherov

In ten days’ time, Ivan Demidov will begin his first full NHL season. The talented young Russian forward has the potential to become a huge part of what’s being built in Montreal, and itgoes without saying that he’ll be one of the most watched players in town this year.Because yes, people in Montreal are thinking big for the kid this year. But it’s not just in Montreal that Demidov is attracting attention. Maxim Lapierre, who spoke to The Sheet, said that this summer, he’s been talking to players around the league… and they’re already getting ready to take on Demidov. In fact, they’re getting ready to take him on just like they’re getting ready to take on… Nikita Kucherov. Nothing less. https://youtu.be/a6vlsshXJzc?si=D_EIg6JlW44zUTZZ&t=700 [content-ads]This isn’t the first time Kucherov’s name has come up when Demidov is mentioned. That said, what’s really interesting about Lapierre’s comments is that defensemen across the league are preparing for a player of this calibre this season. We know how talented the kid is and that he has a style reminiscent of Kucherov. Its illogical to think that Demidov will have as dominant a season as Kucherov, who is capable of scoring over 100 points with his eyes closed. The kid may need a period of adjustment (and it could be a few years before he reaches his full potential), but to see a rookie earn so much respect from his opponents is quite something.Demidov still needs to be helped by his linemates (and that’s a topic of debate around town), but players across the league are already waiting for him to take the detour.Spacer title=’Overtime’]I love it!

– Well done.

– Nice read.
