New dog: Ivan Demidov pays tribute to Céline Dion

In the 2024 draft, the Canadiens got their hands on Ivan Demidov. The young Russian forward was the Habs’ 5th overall pick… and it was a big moment for Habs fans.It had been a long time since such a talented prospect had been selected by the Habs. And what also helped make the moment special was that the pick was made by Céline Dion. With the draft in Vegas, it was a great opportunity… and it made for quite a moment.

In fact, it was the singer who first introduced Demidov to the Montreal organization. In recent days, Demidov and his girlfriend have adopted a dog. They made the announcement on social networks… and also revealed the dog’s name:Céline. Céline[content-ads]

Obviously, it’s a safe bet that this wasn’t a fluke. It must have been a special moment for the young Russian, and it’s a nice way of recognizing the person who first announced him as a Canadiens player.Has anyone ever told you that he loves Montreal? It’sreally cool to see the young player show his love for the Habs and Montreal in this way. It’s a nice touch, and we’ll just have to hope that Céline 2.0 brings Demidov good luck, just as Céline 1.0 brought good luck to Canadiens fans when she announced Demidov’s selection, hehe. Connor McDavid joined Leon Draisaitl on his honeymoon

Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid obviously enjoy spending time together. But we notice that on a few occasions, they’ve been spotted spending time together. For example, we remember the time they played in a garage league.

But now, the two couples (because yes, the Oilers’ two star players are married) have spent time together in a special context. Which one? The Draisaitls’ honeymoon. Draisaitl’s wife, Celeste Desjardins, posted images of McDavid and her husband on jet skis during his honeymoon with Leon Draisaitl. McDavid’s wife, Lauren Kyle, was also on hand:[content-ads]

Obviously, we understand that the two families are close. They wouldn’t spend so much time together, even though they don’t have to, if they didn’t like each other. Is this a clue about McJesus’ next contract? I always thought Draisaitl liked the chances of his captain staying long-term if he’d agreed to put down roots in Alberta for the time being. But nothing’s done. And just because Draisaitl is there doesn’t mean McDavid will stay for sure either, you know. The price will have to be on the table (I don’t see why it would be an issue, though) and the star player will have to feel like the Oilers are going to do what it takes to win in order to stay.

And that’s when you wonder what the main interested party thinks. [spacer title=’Overtime’]- I’d take a trip to Saskatchewan before I’d say that.

– He had a great career.

– Nice.

The Rocket on the verge of losing its two radio broadcasters

It’s August 6. Training camps start next month in the NHL… and it’s going to be even faster than that for junior hockey in the QMJHL. In fact, some of my son’s friends will be trying out for a Q team this year. Nothing to make me feel younger this morning…While we’re on the subject of hockey, I’ve been told something rather sad in the last few hours: Laval Rocket hockey may no longer be broadcast at all on Montreal FM. Since its very first season in 2017-18, the Rocket has seen 91.9 Sports, then BPM Sports broadcast games on 91.9 FM Montreal. All its games for many years, then its home games in 2024-25. Except that the rumblings I’m currently hearing suggest that the station’s new buyer isn’t that keen – for the time being at least – on broadcasting live sports on the station’s airwaves. So here we are, in the middle of August, with no discussions and no concrete plans to broadcast Rocket games next season. From what I hear, the club is currently evaluating options B and C. I contacted Anthony Marcotte for comment, but he declined to comment. Robert Ranger, Interim General Manager of BPM Sports, was unavailable when I tried to speak to him. It should be noted that RDS should continue to broadcast the team’s games on its TVchannels. On the English side, TSN 690 – which has broadcast all the team’s home games since its inception – stopped doing so during the playoffs last spring.

[content-ads]According to sources very close to the matter, there will also have been no discussions between the Rocket and TSN 690 regarding the 2025-26 games. And it would be surprising if there were in the next few weeks…Even on the station’s X page, there’s still a reference to the Laval Rocket.

(Credit: x.com/tsn690)

[content-ads]In short, barring a major turnaround, Rocket games will not be broadcast on FM in 2025-26, in either French or English. This will be a first for the organization, and it will be interesting to see what the Rocket decides to do, knowing that an AHL team usually has at least one broadcast team for its games, if only on the Web.

It will also be interesting to see what the next mandate will be for a guy like Anthony Marcotte, whose fate has been tied to the Rocket for nearly 10 years. I have a feeling that, after the departures of Martin Lemay and Tony Marinaro, the station will try not to lose a third talent… [spacer title=’Prolongation’]If there’s one sports team watching all this closely, it’s the Montreal CF.

If BPM Sports and TSN 690 have decided to stop broadcasting Rocket games, what will they do with Montreal CF games starting in 2026? If the owners feel that it’s no longer as important as it used to be to broadcast live sports (not called Les Canadiens) on their airwaves, what will they decide to do with Montreal CF games?

Yes, the Montreal CF is in a stronger, more prestigious league than the Laval Rocket, but soccer has always been less important than hockey in the Québécois media. We’ll see.

Samuel Montembeault should earn $9M per year, according to a model by The Athletic

Of course, as time goes by, Nick Suzuki’s contract will continue to look good, but what about the others? He’s the Habs’ best forward, in fact. But what about the others? Dom Luszczyszyn, who analyzes hockey with his statistical model for The Athletic, has analyzed the salary situations of all 32 NHL teams. Where does the Canadiens stand? The Habs are 14th in the rankings, with a chance of climbing into the top-10 the day Lane Hutson, Ivan Demidov and Zachary Bolduc’s contracts count.Because no, you’ll understand that rookie contracts don’t count in the model. The goal is to see how well the club manages its contracts, after all.

[content-ads]What we notice is that Samuel Montembeault has an A+ rating on his contract (in relation to the value he brings and his current salary) of $3.15M per season. In fact, based on his performance, he should earn $9M per year according to Luszczyszyn’s model. And he’s not just saying that because the Canadiens goalie speaks French!

There are plenty of contracts that make the Canadiens look good, in reality. Nick Suzuki should earn $10.6M according to the model. Juraj Slafkovsky? $9.3M. Cole Caufield? $9.2M. These guys earn between $7.875M and $7.6M per year, whileNoah Dobson should earn $11.8M according to the model. This is also a good deal, as he’ll earn an average of $9.5 M per year from 2025 to 2033. Kaiden Guhle’s contract isn’t the one the model likes the most, as he’s in the red – by a small margin, but still. But as a general rule, bad contracts go to older players at the end of their contract, not to core players. But it does remind us of one thing: the Habs are going to have to take advantage of this before they have to renew those contracts in a few years’ time. [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Well, I hope so.

– Ouch.

– Things are going well in Toronto.

Matvei Michkov warned by his coach: he must play the right way

A few weeks ago, during the off-season, Matvei Michkov was in the news for all the wrong reasons. It looks like I’m putting words in my first sentence for nothing… because every time Michkov is in the news during the off-season, it’s for all the wrong reasons. #PleonasmHe had saidhe didn’t like dump and chase, the action of getting rid of the puck in the back of the net and applying pressure to go get it. He finds it “exhausting” to play that way. #PauvrePetitPitThis caused a stir, because in the NHL, good teams do this – especially when it comes to the playoffs. The Florida Panthers won with tough hockey, and it’s interesting to note, as reported by HabsolumentFan, that the Nasty Knuckes gang asked Rick Tocchet, the Flyers’ pilot since this summer, what he thought of all this.

[content-ads]And he answered exactly what I thought he was going to answer: it depends on the situation. He said, when he saw the video, that the Russian was going two miles an hour when no one was in front of him. Obviously, if the play is open like that, you have to keep the puck and make a play.He said he was going to kid his player a little about that when he saw it, hehe. But more seriously, basically, Tocchet said that if his player had speed and space, he had to make a play because he has the talent to do so. But

if you come in with your skates misaligned and you try to make a play when you have no speed and you lose the puck doing it… I don’t care who you are, it’s the wrong play. And if you want to play late in June and win the Stanley Cup, you can’t play that way.

Rick Tocchet on Matvei Michkov

What the Flyers pilot is saying is clear. If the best play to make is to go for broke because Michkov has put himself in a position to do so, let him. That even includes Michigan-style goals.[content-ads]But often, the right play to make is to play physical and go for the puck in the corner of the ice. Remember that Michkov has already said that the most important thing for him is to get to the playoffs. Themore you look at it, the easier it is to say that, even if Michkov is brimming with talent, the Montreal Canadiens can’t be completely displeased not to have a player so reluctant to join the ranks.Provided David Reinbacher’s knee holds out, of course…[spacer title=’Overtime’]- Obviously.

– Wow.

– Interesting.

Alex Ovechkin teams up with Russian company for career production

Alex Ovechkin made NHL history this season by breaking Wayne Gretzky’s goal-scoring record. Ovechkin may not yet have completed his NHL career, but it’s not crazy to say that he can be recognized as the greatest Russian player in hockey history.

His career will be immortalized as Ovechkin has partnered with Russian company Yandex and its streaming platform, Kinopoisk, to produce a production about his life, theAssociated Press reports.

👀🎬

No details on the format of the production have been revealed. It could be a dramatic recreation of his career, a film, a documentary in the style of “The Last Dance”. Ovechkin will become an ambassador for Yandex, and is expected to appear in the Russian company’s advertising campaigns. Alex Ovechkin has one season left on his Capitals contract, and is expected to leave the NHL at the end of it. We’ve often heard in the past that he’ll play one last season with Moscow Dynamo in the KHL, before hanging up his skates, so we’ll have to wait a little longer before we’re allowed to see this production on Ovechkin’s career [content-ads] We can also wonder whether the production will only be in Russian, or whether it will be translated into other languages to make the product accessible worldwide. If the folks at Yandex are smart, they know there’s money to be made in North America by translating this into English, at the very least. There’s a lot to be told about Ovechkin’s career, which is already being scrutinized by every media outlet surrounding the NHL. This kind of production can also unveil stories unknown to the public, which are sure to please hockey fans. spacer title=’Overtime’] – He looks fully recovered from his knee injury.

– It’s retirement time for Anton Khudobin.

– Tough luck for Russian athletes.

Jared Davidson: we’ll be keeping an eye on him at practice camp

The news unveiled by my colleague Maxime Truman yesterday concerning Kirby Dach doesn’t bode well. In fact, for those who haven’t seen it, Dach hasn’t fully recovered from his knee injury, so his training camp is in jeopardy . We’ll see in due course whether he’ll be ready.Of necessity, this affects the hierarchy at center. Behind Nick Suzuki, it’s hard to know exactly who the three center players will be at game #1 of the season, and who will be in which chair.Alex Newhook will undoubtedly be an important center for the club – especially if Dach is injured. Joe Veleno and Jake Evans are the club’s other “natural” centers, and if Dach is injured at the start of the year, the question will arise as to whether another Laval center should start the year at the top. Oliver Kapanen and Owen Beck are candidates, but what if Jared Davidson is one? He’s a name we don’t hear much about, but he’s a center who could fit into what the Canadiens might be looking for on a bottom-6 in 2025-2026

[content-ads]Davidson is a good center who had 45 points in Laval last year. The 6′ player is progressing well and brings toughness to his game, so why shouldn’t he be an option? Obviously, to make his mark, Davidson would have to have a good camp, and circumstances would have to allow the Habs to bring a player of his calibre to the club.

But let’s just say it’s something to keep in mind. [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Nice.

– Good question.

– It won’t happen.

ÉCJ screenings: Michael Hage before Sacha Boisvert and Justin Carbonneau

There’s a lot of talk these days about international hockey. Why? Because the youth tournament (the summer showcase) in preparation for the World Junior Championship has been the talk of the town. And because the invitations to the Canadian Olympic Summer Camp have attracted a lot of attention, as has the case of Samuel Montembeault. #In all this,Michael Hage’s name is one to watch. The prospect logically has a good chance of breaking into Canada’s line-up at the holiday tournament. Yesterday, Craig Button placed him on the wing of Canada’s third line, with Tij Iginla on the left and Caleb Desnoyers in the middle.

And at The Athletic, which made its projections, Hage is still on the wing of the third trio with Jarome’s son. But at center, Jett Luchanko has been chosen. So it’s lining up to be his chair? Possibly.[content-ads]

But what’s also interesting about the projections from The Athletic’s experts is to see who was left out to allow Hage to be on their projected roster. And two names stand out: Justin Carbonneau and Sacha Boisvert. I’ mnot surprised in the case of Carbonneau, who is a prospect for the Blues, because this is a tournament that favors 19-year-old players, for the most part. Carbonneau will get his chance in a year and a half, if all goes well.

And even if Hage was chosen ahead of Boisvert by The Athletic for left-handed/right-handed reasons, the fact remains that this means the two are developing at relatively the same pace. Because left-handed or right-handed, if Boisvert had quite a bit of a head start on the Ontarian, he’d be right where he belongs. No?[spacer title=’Overtime’]- D. Callis back.

– Worth noting.

– Interesting. #84

– At least.

Olympic Games: “Samuel Montembeault speaks French, which helps his chances”

If you don’t want politics and sports to mix… don’t follow sports. This is especially true when it comes to Team Canada. Tensions between Anglophones and Francophones often come to the surface at such times. The fact that fewer and fewer Francophones are making it into the line-up of Canadian teams is the talk of the town. Take the Confrontation des quatre nations, for example. No Québécois played in that tournament, with Samuel Montembeault as #3 goalkeeper. Could the same thing happen at the Olympics this winter? Yes. After all, I can’t think of any other Québécois / Francophone who would fit in with the four nations, and Monty was, along with Jordan Binnington and Adin Hill, the only three guests at Hockey Canada’s summer camp. #Index

[content-ads]We know it’s all going to come down to the 2025-2026 season. But the fact that Montembeault was at the tournament in February and invited to camp this summer says a lot about Canada’s intentions, which saw Monty rise in 2024-2025. And Steve Simmons, a journalist in English Canada, thinks he knows why the Québécois will be at the Olympics.

Samuel Montembeault speaks French, which helps his chances of being the third goalie.

Steve Simmons

Jimmy Murphy shared his text talking about a lack of respect for the talent of the Canadiens goalie, who brought the Habs to the playoffs in 2025. This isn’t the first time a journalist from English Canadahas talked about Montembeault as a default choice for Hockey Canada due to the French fact. It also happened a few months ago.[content-ads]

Is it true that this weighs in the balance? I guess, to a certain extent, they know that not choosing any Québécois would be bad press in Quebec, but to what extent? I don’t know. What I do know, however, is that seeing a journalist raise the theory in such a tone isn’t exactly going to calm the discontent of Québécois who are already angry at the English. To be continued. [spacer title=’prolongation’]Logan Thompson, Stuart Skinner, Darcy Kuemper and Mackenzie Blackwood are the other goalies who could potentially make the Canadian Olympic team. Binnington is probably assured of his position. But Hill and Montembeault?

Oliver Kapanen tries to make his mark with Finland at the Olympics

50 NHL players are currently taking part in Finland’s orientation camp in preparation for the 2026 Olympic Games. Patrik Laine is not among them, as he is currently practicing with his teammates in Brossard, but another Canadiens player has the chance to impress Finland’s officials.

We’re talking about Oliver Kapanen, seen in a photo shared by the Finnish national team’s Instagram account.

As can be seen in the photo, Kapanen even had the chance to spend some time with his former teammate, Joel Armia.

Monday was reserved for off-ice activities that focused mainly on marketing and signing sessions, but it’s already interesting to see Kapanen among the invited players, which means he’ll have a chance to break into the Finnish line-up, even if he has very little NHL experience.

The Canadiens’ player will have to be excellent in practice and at the start of the season with the Habs if he wants to earn a spot with the Finns at the next Olympics. In June, NHL.com unveiled its prediction for Finland’s roster at the 2026 Olympics. It would be surprising to see Kapanen overtake one of the players on the forward list [content-ads] In fact, Kapanen could realistically take the place of one of these forwards. We’re talking about Jesperi Kotkaniemi here; KK is by no means having the NHL career he’d hoped for, but he did rack up 33 points with the Hurricanes last season. If there’s anyone who believes in Kapanen’s chances of making his mark with Finland, it’s Grant McCagg. The former scout said a few days ago thathe thinks the Canadiens’ youngster can play for Finland if he gets off to a good start this season. It’s not impossible, but it will be quite a challenge for Kapanen. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Speaking of Finland.

Wow.

– She’s just awesome.

– Obviously.
