Mike Matheson could be inspired by Kent Hughes

The Canadiens are moving in the right direction. There’s a culture building around an increasingly solid core, and this culture is also evident off the ice, with players leaving money on the table to be part of the team. Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki and, most recently, Lane Hutson come to mind. And now there’s the Mike Matheson issue.Pierre LeBrun was on Tony Marinaro’s podcast and discussed Kent Hughes’ new contract.

[content-ads] That’s what he understood from talking to other executives around the league. Hughes definitely led by example. He’s followed in the footsteps of another of his former clients, Patrice Bergeron. Players accept smaller salaries, and so does he. It’s gestures like this that bring a team even closer together. Mike Matheson could do the same. He has a great opportunity to stay at home and offer stability to the organization. He also has the potential to form a good pair with Noah Dobson for a long time to come. We’ll see what his final demands are, but he can take a cue from Hughes and put some water in his wine. I have a feeling that’s what’s going to happen. There’s a desire on the defender’s part to stay in Montreal, but Kent Hughes will make sure it’s at the right price. In the end, I think Matheson will agree to a long-term deal [spacer title=’En rafale’] – Rocket in action in Belleville,

Nice moment for him.

– Great story!

Emil Heineman would be the Canadiens’ third top scorer

The Canadiens parted ways with Emil Heineman – and the #16 and #17 picks in the last draft – to acquire Noah Dobson. The defenseman has been playing really, really well since the start of the season, and is showing that he’s a quality #1 defenseman. But things are going really well for Heineman on Long Island, too. The big Swede is now his club’s second-highest scorer… and if he were playing for the Canadiens, he’d be the Flanelle’s third-highest scorer with three goals.only Cole Caufield (five goals) and Oliver Kapanen (four goals) have more than him with the Habs. Heineman has hit the target three times in just six games so far this season: he’s currently on a 41-goal pace per season, which, we agree, is far from bad. He’s always been a good hockey player.

[content-ads] We saw during his time in Montreal (and Laval) that the forward has a fantastic shot, and that’s what he’s been showing off since the start of the season.

Seeing Heineman enjoy so much success with the Islanders may lead some – especially Isles fans – to believe that the Habs have made a mistake. But… On the other hand, Noah Dobson’s contribution has been unparalleled in Montreal since the start of the season. He excels in all three zones of the ice, he forms with Matheson one of the most complete pairs in the National League… and that’s why Kent Hughes had to pay to get him off Long Island. The transaction, at the moment, seems to favor both clubs. And that’s just as well… because no one in Montreal can complain about Dobson’s performance so far [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Oops!

– I like the idea.

Alexander Zharovsky: The Habs called two clubs to draft him in the first round

The Canadiens selected Alexander Zharovsky with the 34th pick of the last draft. The Canadiens were happy to see that he was still available… because they didn’t think the youngster would still be available in the second round. And that’s why Kent Hughes tried to move up in the first round. He called two clubs to make sure he could be selected,at least according to a recent RG Media article. The player’s agent, Dan Milstein (the same guy who handles Ivan Demidov), said the Habs wanted to trade with the Hurricanes and Blackhawks to get Zharovsky in the first round, but it didn’t happen in the end. Reminder: the Habs still managed to move up to 32nd by trading pick #41 and pick #49 to the Hurricanes…the Canadiens really liked him, to put it another way.

[content-ads] At the moment, we’re seeing why the Canadiens had him so high on their list. Alexander Zharovsky, 18, is off to a great start in the KHL: he has eight points (including three goals) in just nine games with his team… and he’s far from being his coach’s most-used player.

We see him score goals, we see him create plays, we see him show off his hands…His potential really looks interesting:

All the better, if the Canadiens feel they’ve picked up the right player. And the club’s executives must be really pleased, too, to have seen him slide so much for the chance to select him in the draft. It reminds me a little of Ivan Demidov, even if the circumstances are different… [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Good point.

– 100%.

– Love it.

– Well done.

Martin St-Louis to field a 100% Québécois lineup against the Flames

Joshua Roy will play tonight against the Flames. Kirby Dach won’t be in uniform (and Jakub Dobes will be in net), giving the Québécois his first NHL game of the season. And for the game, Roy will play alongside… Joe Veleno and Zachary Bolduc. It’ll be a 100% Québécois line-up against the Calgary outfit, which is pretty interesting. I can’t remember the last time this happened in Montreal. Three guys from Québécois on the same unit for the Canadiens is pretty special… and the result could be interesting.Bolduc seems to be looking forward to playing with his two new linemates

[content-ads] Roy has great vision, Veleno is more responsible in the face-off circle and in all three zones of the rink.i wonder if they’ll speak to each other in English or French, on the bench and on the ice? Hehe. No joke, it’ll be cool to see. Bolduc is running out of gas, and Martin St-Louis seems to be trying to find a way to get him going again. The sniper has scored in his first three games of the season, but has also been blanked in his last four duels. ..Anyways. It’s going to be special for the fans, and I’ll be curious to see the outcome of this experiment, because once again, the three players have the tools to complement each other well. And if this can help Bolduc find his rhythm again… everyone in town will be happy. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – There’s some activity in the waivers.

– Great Tony Marinaro.

– That’s a good one.

– It’s going to be a good show.

Mike Matheson could sign a shorter contract than you think

The Montréal Canadiens want to keep Mike Matheson in town. Whether it’s to lure Sidney Crosby to town or (more importantly) to stabilize the club’s blue line, there’s every reason to keep the Québécois with the Canadiens. And on that subject, Pierre LeBrun (Sick Podcast) discussed the matter with Tony Marinaro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZppd_DCUQ4 What you need to know is that Matheson wants to stay, but the Canadiens also want to keep him. No one should be surprised when you see him eating up minutes like that: he has the confidence of his bosses, andthe duo he forms with Noah Dobson is really strong. content-ads

The Canadiens, who value the leadership Matheson brings to a young team, may want to give him a four-year contract, according to LeBrun. But the tipster also mentions that Matheson may want to ask for five years. What’s interesting is that some rumors mentioned that Matheson may want a long-term, six-year contract from his bosses. But if LeBrun is right, we’re not there yet. And when you take into account that Kent Hughes often wins his salary negotiations, you realize that Matheson could well sign for four years. spacer title=’prolongation’]Things have time to change, but I don’t have the feeling that HuGo and Matheson, who is represented by Hughes’ former agency, are going to want to let the matter drag on. We’ll see what happens in due course.

Patrik Laine to seek second opinion on injury

Patrik Laine is injured at the moment. He hasn’t played in the Canadiens’ last two games, and he didn’t go out West either. We don’t know exactly where he’s hurt, but we do know that he’s going for a second opinion on his injury. Eric Engels reported it all, on X.

Last year, when he was injured in a preseason game, he decided to do the same thing. And it’s worth remembering, by the way, that he decided not to have knee surgery. Is that knee still bothering him? If it is… Will he consider surgery this time around? content-ads] Obviously, I don’t think I need to tell you that the Finn hasn’t had a great start to the season. He’s collected just one assist in five games, he’s racked up a meagre total of six shots on goal… and he’s played an average of 12:36 per game since the start of the campaign. That said, you have to wonder whether he was really 100% from the very first game of the season. We know that he spent the summer training in Montreal, but that he also struggled a bit at the team’s training camp a few weeks ago. Laine is still listed day-to-day, as Eric Engels stated. But it will also be interesting to see what happens with him in the next few days. Because if he has to miss a long period of activity, it’s going to change things in Montreal. And it’s going to force the Canadiens to make some slightly more important decisions. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Sick.

– Good.

All signs point to Jakub Dobes playing tonight

The Canadiens are in Calgary tonight looking for their fifth win in their last six games (sixth this season), and now would be a good time to take advantage… because the Flames aren’t off to a great start to the campaign. The Alberta outfit has won just one of their seven duels so far… and there are signs that the Habs will be putting their faith in Jakub Dobes against the Flames. I say this because Samuel Montembeault skated this afternoon… as did Kirby Dach and Marc Del Gaizo,so we can also expect Dach to pass.

[content-ads] Logically, we’re likely to see Joshua Roy play his first game of the season. Not a huge surprise… becausewe weren’t necessarily expecting Dach to play tonight. But back to the goalies. Because it’s interesting… At the moment, Jakub Dobes is doing well. He’s won all three of his games this season and his statistics are really, really good. It’s hard to blame him for anything in his game

  • 3-0-0 record
  • Goals-against average of 1.63 (!)
  • Efficiency rate of .939 (!)

The Canadiens will surely want to take advantage of their hot streak to give themselves as many chances as possible to pick up two points against a club that’s not doing so well. Tomorrow, the Oilers will be on the menu… and the Habs probably want to trust their #1 goaltender, even if Samuel Montembeault isn’t off to the greatest start of the season. I can’t wait to see what happens, then. Because if Dobes is still smoking tonight and Monty doesn’t have a great outing tomorrow, there’ll be (even more) talk around town… [spacer title=’Prolongation’] If Dach doesn’t play tonight – which is expected – we might see him in uniform tomorrow. At least, we shouldn’t be surprised if that’s what happens.

Lane Hutson and the Olympics: “Maybe not the right time,” says Bill Guerin

This summer, Lane Hutson was ignored by the United States. He wasn’t among the players invited to the Americans’ Olympic orientation camp, and the news caused quite astir. But last week, we learned that the Canadiens’ defenseman has been added to the U.S. preliminary list for the 2026 competition. Does this mean he’ll be making the club? Not necessarily. In fact, when you hear Bill Guerin say things like that, you can potentially believe that Lane won’t be there…The American team’s GM, in an interview with Michael Traikos(TheHockeyNews), made it clear: Hutson’s a good player, but there are a limited number of places on the team. And it’s this sentence in particular that stands out:

I don’t know if it’s the right time for him.

Bill Guerin

[content-ads] Lane Hutson is a wicked good hockey player. No doubt about it; guys who can make plays like the one we saw late against the Preds aren’t running around, after all. Hutson saved his club by blocking the puck when the Habs had an empty net… but his rebound was simply perfect too.Without his quick – and accurate – pass to Caufield, the Habs probably wouldn’t have scored on the sequence:

But… But when you look at the Americans’ paper line-up, you realize just how much talent there is on the blue line. Quinn Hughes, Charlie McAvoy, Brock Faber, Ryan McDonagh, Adam Fox, Noah Hanifin, Jake Sanderson, Zach Werenski, Jaccob Slavin… already, we’re talking about nine guys who are worth considering. Because there’s this, too: if Hughes and Fox make the team, two guys who play the same style as Lane Hutson and who are hard to pack in.maybe Lane Hutson is ready for the Olympics. But it’s true, on the other side of the coin, that there really is quality when you look at the U.S. defensemen roster right now.I’d be willing to bet my house, though, that the little defenseman will get his chance to shine one day if not in 2026.

[spacer title=’Overtime’] – Bad news on Long Island.

– I love it.

– Reminder: the Habs play tonight in Calgary.

– Go Jays!

The idea of Zachary Bolduc playing with Ivan Demidov just won’t die

Recently, in a piece about Sidney Crosby, I talked about how, if he were in Montreal, I’d imagine him with Ivan Demidov and Zachary Bolduc on his wings. Well, for the moment, it would be hard to put #87 in the middle of the other two, for reasons that seem pretty obvious to me at first glance. Right now, it would be hard to put #87 in the middle of the other two, for reasons that seem pretty obvious to me at first glance. But the other two are in Montreal right now. And if you dig around on the web a bit, you can see that I’m not the only one who wants to reunite Bolduc and Demidov. The voices of hockey on the radio, as well as Jean-Charles Lajoie, have also raised the idea.Needless to say, I like the plan.In fact, having a scorer of Bolduc’s calibre with a playmaker like the Russian could really create some sparks on the ice. Obviously, both youngsters have to adapt to a new system.

[content-ads]In the long term, both players should have their place in the top-6. And while I think Nick Suzuki could one day be Demidov’s center, there’s a world in which the captain’s current line-up doesn’t change, so Demidov and Bolduc could end up playing together anyway. Oliver Kapanen has good chemistry with Demidov, andso far, it’s working. In my mind, it works. And while Martin St-Louis may not yet be at the stage of testing such a combination, I’m sure he’s already thought about it. spacer title=’Overtime’]- Jordan Harris is injured.

Ivan Demidov is no longer on social networks and doesn’t give a damn about his stats

Playing in Montreal isn’t always easy. There’ sa lot of pressure on some guys to bring the Stanley Cup back to Montreal. Andas the Habs turn the corner in their rebuilding process, that raises the level of expectation. Obviously, I don’t think I need to tell you that Ivan Demidov is at the heart of that pressure for the Canadiens. And that’s normal, considering how talented he is. How does he manage it all? According to what his agent (Dan Milstein) told RG media in an interview, Demidov has chosen to remove social networking applications from his cell phone and is completely disconnected from the media. He just wants to concentrate on his family and hockey.

[content-ads]Maybe it’s just as well even at his age. After all, the pressure is so great that simply focusing on something else, at his age, can’t be a bad thing. According to his agent, Demidov is offered partnerships every day – and clearly, even though BeHy announced one today, it doesn’t happen every day.

So leaving the outside noise aside (including the odds of him winning the Calder and his personal stats, according to agent) to just help the Habs win is at the heart of his plan. So much the better if the kid has his priorities in the right place. But one day, he’ll surely learn to manage all that instead of leaving it aside and simply isolating himself in his corner. [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Interesting.
