Top-4: Alex Ovechkin scores his 898th career goal and first of the season

It was a quiet night in the National Hockey League last night, with only eight teams in action. Despite this, the four games put on a good show. Here are the highlights.1. A first this season and 898th in his careerWe had to wait until the Washington Capitals’ fifth game of the season before seeing the Russian machine get going again. Indeed, after being blanked in the goal column in his first four games of the season, Alex Ovechkin finally scored his first goal of the campaign last night. It was, incidentally, his 898ᵉ career goal, bringing him to within just two goals of the 900 plateau.

🚨

A classic Ovechkin goal with a on-rebound shot that only he knows the secret to.

Ovi also picked up an assist in the Caps’ 5-1 win over the Minnesota Wild, making it four points in five games [content-ads]2. Alex Sandin-Pellikka scores his first career NHL goalAfter being picked up by the Montreal Canadiens in their season opener, the Detroit Red Wings haven’t lost another game, picking up their fourth straight win with a 2-1 overtime victory last night over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Promising young defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka scored his first career NHL goal in the win.

It was also a first NHL point for the 20-year-old Swede.

The goal was the Red Wings’ only goal in regular time, while in overtime it was none other than team captain Dylan Larkin who gave his team the win.

[content-ads]3. Hat trick for Nick SchmaltzThe Utah Mammoth begins its first season with a new name and logo, and so far it’s going well with three wins in five games.

That third win of the season came last night, as the Mammoth prevailed 6-3 over the pesky San Jose Sharks. Nick Schmaltz stood out with a hat trick and an assist, while Clayton Keller also scored four points.

[content-ads]4. A second goal in two games for Max SassonAfter a tough first few games, the Vancouver Canucks made changes to their lineup, including recalling 25-year-old forward Max Sasson. Well, since that recall, Sasson has scored two goals in two games, including one last night in a 3-2 Canucks win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

So the Canucks are unbeaten in two games since Sasson, never drafted in the NHL, inserted the squad.[spacer title=’En Rafale’] – Adorable.

A dirty trick darkens Jacob Fowler’s whitewash

Tonight, the Rocket played their home opener against the Abbotsford Canucks. However, an unfortunate incident spoiled the party in Laval. Rocket rookie Josiah Didier got into a fight with Chase Stillman midway through the second period.

Didier quickly fell to the ice, hitting the back of his head hard on the rink.

The problem was that his opponent landed another very vicious punch after his fall even though the defender was in no state to defend himself. It was a completely unnecessary and gratuitous move on a player who was knocked out.

After the fall, blood could be seen on the ice under his head and Didier had to leave the rink on a stretcher. Unsurprisingly, the defenseman did not return to the game afterwards.

[content-ads] By the way, while the two players each received a five-minute penalty for their fight, Stillman also collected a game misconduct penalty. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was suspended for his action.

It’s all the more unfortunate that Didier was celebrating his return to the team after nine years with the Hamilton Bulldogs and Saint John IceCaps.

Since then, he’s rolled his hump in the ECHL and AHL, playing with a variety of teams. The 32-year-old defenseman had earned a tryout last Monday with the Rocket, who are dealing with numerous injuries on the blue line this early in the season.

The sad incident overshadowed a fine 3-0 home win for the Rocket, with Jacob Fowler earning his first shutout of the season by turning away 16 shots from the Canucks [spacer title=’Overtime’] – A beautiful goal!

Journalist takes a tumble on Sportsnet

Being a sports journalist can be a risky business, as Sportsnet columnist Anna Dua found out the hard way yesterday before the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers. Dua, who was running down the hallway in high heels and an all-white outfit, got stuck in her shoes before taking a hard landing.

Just goes to show that hockey isn’t just dangerous on the ice. The whole thing happened in close proximity to Rangers players who were in the circle doing their pre-game warm-ups and witnessed the event.

His cameraman, who was positioned in just the right place at just the right time, was able to capture the scene, which is rather comical as you can see in the video. Fortunately, the journalist does not appear to have been injured as a result of her misfortune, and was discussing the incident on air only some twenty minutes later.

David Amber was so amused by his colleague’s video that he decided to play it live on Hockey Central [content-ads] Dua chose instead to laugh at her clumsiness as she herself shared the Sportsnet clip on her personal X page.

The journalist, who always looks her best on air, might want to consider trading in her high heels for a pair of espadrilles or something a little more practical for running around an amphitheater. In fact, her colleague Amber advises her to avoid high-heeled shoes for future reports.

Anyway, I don’t know if she’ll learn her lesson in the future [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Kirk scores the Jays’ second run.

The Bell Centre is not the NHL’s most intimidating amphitheatre

The NHL surveyed some of its players as part of the North American Media Tour to find out which amphitheatre they found most difficult to play in. And it wasn’t the Centre Bell that came out on top. Out of 29 players questioned, seven chose the home of the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Lenovo Center is particularly noisy and intimidating for opponents, with a configuration that makes the arena seem smaller.

What’s more, the visitors’ locker room is too small and lacks most of the facilities normally found throughout the League. Not to mention that the fans are not only intense in their own amphitheatre, but have imported the tradition of tailgating in the parking lot before Hurricanes games, with many of them waiting for the visitors’ bus to arrive to insult the players. In short, the jerks are intimidating. It must also be said that in recent years, the Canes have become one of the NHL’s very good teams. They’re already a tough club to play against, and that’s even truer when they have home-ice advantage. content-ads] In second place, with three votes, is the home of the Canadiens. However, in Montreal, it’s more our passion for hockey that makes us intense supporters. What’s more, we’re renowned for our knowledge of the sport, as Dustin Wolf says: “Everyone knows everything about hockey over there. The history of the club is also something that players find intimidating when they come to play a game at the Bell Centre. The Canadiens, who haven’t lost in regulation time in 14 games at home, are really starting to turn their home ice into a real fortress. You have to go back to February 9, before the 4 Nations break, for the Habs’ last regular-season defeat.

The Habs, who should be one of the League’s good teams in the coming years, are likely to become an increasingly difficult team to face at home, and it’s not impossible that the Bell Centre will do even better in the future. Seven amphitheatres come third with two votes, including Boston’s TD Garden, which was the choice of Nick Suzuki, who finds the fans very noisy, especially against the Canadiens. Power ranking: The Habs excluded from The Athletic top-5

The season is still young. Very young. But as of today, at least before tonight’s games… the Canadiens are in 3rd place overall in the National League. No, you’re not dreaming. No one could have predicted that the Habs would be a powerhouse in the NHL this season. No one could have. The club doesn’t have a lot of experience, and even if it has a good core, the rebuild isn’t over yet. But… In The Athletic’s ranking of the best teams, the Habs are 8th on the list. Although, in reality… the Habs deserve to be in the top-5, when you look at the overall National League standings. In the top-5 are

  • Colorado Avalanche
  • Dallas Stars
  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • Washington Capitals
  • Toronto Maple Leafs

The complete list is in the following article:

[content-ads] There may be one thing, which is sinking the Habs right now. And here, I’m talking about the team’s defensive play. The Canadiens, after all, are not among the NHL’s best clubs defensively. They allow a lot of goals, they allow a lot of shots, they allow a lot of scoring chances… and that makes a difference, in the end.

That said, in general, it’s hard to fault Martin St-Louis’ team. And the reason is simple: the club is able to enjoy success on the ice, despite everything. If the Canadiens had five losses in as many games, we’d be having a different discussion… But that’s not the case, right now. spacer title=’Overtime’] – 100%:

Zachary Bolduc: “More” than a top-6 winger in Marco D’Amico’s eyes

Zachary Bolduc is off to a great start with the Montreal Canadiens, scoring a goal in each of his first three games with the Habs and showing that he’s capable of putting the puck in the net with his skills. He was expected to add some offensive punch to the Habs’ attack… and so far, that’s what we’re seeing from him. and so far, that’s what we’re seeing from him. Marco D’Amico, on the Processus podcast, said something that really interested me about Bolduc: in his eyes, the Québécois can become “more than just a top-6 winger” in Montreal. And his comments are relevant because it’s true that Bolduc has that potential. The Québécois can become an important player on the top-6, of course… but we’re also talking about a player who can become really important on the powerplay in Montreal. The popular observation, at the moment, is as follows: Bolduc impresses and can become an impact player for the Canadiens.[content-ads] Bolduc’s impact, so far, is more than interesting. The Québécois uses his shot to create scoring chances. He’s using his aggressiveness to finish checks – something I really like about his game – and you see him give 100% every time he takes the ice. That’s all you want from a player, after all. We’re not seeing it with Juraj Slafkovsky so far this season… Getting back to Bolduc, it’s important to mention that he’s filling exactly the role he was supposed to fill when the Canadiens picked him up in July. It’s not quite there yet on the powerplay, but Bolduc is helping the Canadiens five-on-five. He adds a different element to the Habs’ top-9 because the Habs needed a player like him: a player who can have a certain offensive touch… but who also wants to be involved in all three zones of the rink. And he fits in well, too, with the culture the Habs are trying to instill in Montreal. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – CC is on fire

It’s time for Juraj Slafkovsky to wake up

Juraj Slafkovsky said it himself: he’s tired of excuses. He wants to “stop talking” and start performing… and this isn’t the first time we’ve heard that either. But there it is, the damned problem. After five games this season, the big Slovak doesn’t look like a guy who makes $7.6 million a season. He doesn’t look like a guy who wants to do everything for his club, and he doesn’t look like a guy who dominates on the ice. At some point, the boots have to follow the reels. As you’ll understand from the introduction to my text, I don’t like Slaf’s start to the season. He had an e*** good game against the Red Wings last Thursday. But my question is: why don’t we see this Slaf every night? Why aren’t we able to see the involved and useful Slaf we should see more often?

[content-ads] Slaf is adept at protecting and retrieving pucks. That’s what can make the difference in his game, and seeing him involved in those facets of the game is always interesting. But the Slovak needs to find a way to produce as well. For example? On the powerplay, it seems to be harder than ever. He’s killing plays, he’s not able to complete certain passes for some reason, and I thought he looked late a few times too. He’s got great vision, and we know that. But he’s been invisible – or almost invisible – in the club’s last three games… That’s not what you want from one of your best forwards. And it’s not what you want from a guy who keeps saying he has to be at the top of his game from the very first game of the season… And at some point, there will have to be “consequences”. Maybe starting by taking away his important role on the powerplay will change things… But one thing’s for sure: it can’t last forever either.

Logan Mailloux is healthy, but will be sidelined for the Blues’ next game

Logan Mailloux’s last game was a disaster. The defenseman finished his team’s game with an ugly minus-4 record and Blues head coach Jim Montgomery was fed up.I say that… because Mailloux will be sidelined tomorrow, when the Blues host the Stars in St. Louis.

Of all NHL defensemen, Mailloux has the worst minus-7 differential in the league so far this season. He’s young, he’s still learning… Montgomery was keen to set the record straight, however: it’s not the end of the world because the Blues have a plan for him.We know he’s appreciated in St. Louis and that the Blues will give him what he needs to become a good defenseman.

Zachary Bold… No joke, everyone knows that Logan Mailloux has great offensive qualities in his game. But everyone also knows that Logan Mailloux tends to have some difficulties in his territory. His decision-making isn’t always on point, nor is his positioning… and this means he sometimes becomes a problem in the defensive zone. That’s another reason why the Blues want to give him time to learn. Montgomery wants to give him the opportunity to watch a game from the sidelines (we know that can help, sometimes) and he seems confident that he’ll become important in St. Louis. But still: it took… four games before he was left out. That’s not a lot of games. And even if the sample is small, the result is the same in the end. He’ll have to get back on track, to put it another way.[spacer title=’Overtime’] – He’s right.

Kaiden Guhle: Supporters saw him limping today in a restaurant

Kaiden Guhle didn’t finish last night’s game against the Predators. The defenseman hurt himself in the third period… and it looked really, really painful. You can clearly see that he was uncomfortable coming off the ice, and you can see in the video that follows that he wasn’t feeling well. When a guy comes off the ice like that, it’s pretty telling:

The Canadiens are off today, which is why there’s been no official update yet on the defenseman, but what we do know is that Guhle was spotted with Jayden Struble today at a Montreal restaurant – Mano Cornuto – and was limping as he walked. The good news? He wasn’t wearing a brace or an orthopedic boot… and he was able to walk without the use of crutches. Now that’s encouraging.

[content-ads] I don’t need to remind you that Kaiden Guhle is an important member of the Canadiens’ defensive brigade, playing alongside Lane Hutson on the team’s top-4… and he’s the club’s blue-line general too. He’s able to take on the opposition’s best players night after night and do his job in the best possible way.Kaiden Guhle is really important. And we’ve seen him injured too many times since the start of his career, so it’s good that he seems to have avoided the worst. We’ll obviously have to wait for news from the organization before coming to an ultimate conclusion, but knowing he wasn’t wearing a splint or orthopedic boot today is already a good step forward. It would hurt to lose him for a bit. Especially when everything seems to be going swimmingly in Montreal at the moment… [spacer title=’Prolongation’] Guhle stayed on the Canadiens bench after getting hurt last night and finished the game sitting with the rest of his teammates.

You can see him celebrating Cole Caufield’s game-tying goal late in the game:

In the photo above, all the guys are standing… except Patrik Laine. And it’s funny, but earlier this week, I saw all the Canadiens players congratulating Lane Hutson in Brossard after he signed his new contract with the Canadiens.

Who was the first Habs player to leave the group, in which the guys had gathered to give Hutson some love? You guessed it ..

Left-handed – right-handed: Samuel Montembeault and Gonzo were perfect

On David Beaucage’s Drette su’l tape podcast, the Canadiens’ goalie revealed that he knows by heart which side every NHL player shoots from. He also knows what color the guys are tapping their sticks. Here’s the clip

He’s not the only one who knows the details of NHL player gender (which doesn’t make it any less interesting, by the way), and it’s more common than you might think.Colleague Marc-Olivier Cook can tell you whether an NHL player is left- or right-handed, whether he has a black or white pat AND how he pats his hockey stick. Stéphane Gonzalez, meanwhile, has also mastered the left- / right-handed aspect of NHL players. Seeing Monty say this to David Beaucage, he decided to challenge the Canadiens’ goaltender to a contest on BPM Sports at 1pm this afternoon. It was well worth the detour.[content-ads]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWzTyhgdObM Georges Laraque asked Gonzo and Monty to name the sides of 20 NHLers. We’re talking about 20 guys each, so 40 in all.The result? 40 correct answers. Gonzo was able to answer in 0.00001 seconds, while the Habs goalie was able to name the color of each player’s tap along the way. In short, both impressed in their own way… and I’m told that Monty got 20/20 for the taps. In LIVE, on YouTube, there were 5,500 people, at one point. It’s good to see that the goalie lent himself to the game on his day off, as it made for a superb moment. Segments like this bring fans closer to the Canadiens players, and if one of them wants to take on colleague Marc-Olivier Cook, that would be quite a result too. [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Interesting.
