Pascal Vincent chose to stay in Laval: “he could have ended up in the NHL elsewhere”

For a while last season, it looked like Québécois Pascal Vincent wouldn’t be back with the Laval Rocket for the 2025-2026 season, and rumors were swirling that he’d be heading to the NHL. But, as we know, the coach is still in Laval for his second season with the Rocket. Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton must surely be proud to see him stay on, as he was successful in 2024-2025 and developed some of the organization’s products. When it comes to HuGo’s good deeds, Vincent’s hiring is one of them.

(Credit: )

[content-ads]But what we’re wondering is how close the former Columbus Blue Jackets head coach came to leaving for other climes this summer… Renaud Lavoie, in his morning column on BPM Sports, broached the subject.

So happy he decided to stay in the Canadiens organization with the Rocket. He could have found himself an assistant coach elsewhere. I had a chat with him at the start of training camp and he loves the organization so much, living here.

Pascal Vincent

Vincent and his family are well settled in Montreal… until a new NHL challenge is on the cards – which Renaud Lavoie says will happen. And that’s where it gets interesting. After all, Martin St-Louis isn’t exactly on an ejector seat, which means that if he wants to return to the NHL, it’ll surely be somewhere other than Quebec. Does he prefer managing in the AHL to being an assistant in the NHL? Considering Lavoie’s comments and the fact that, in the past, Vincent preferred managing the Manitoba Moose to being an assistant in Winnipeg, you’d think he’d prefer that, yes. And in the meantime, it’s the Canadiens who stand to benefit.[spacer title=’Overtime’]- Speaking of the Rocket.

Hutson and Caufield, too small for the NHL : bullsh*t

stanley Cup champion teams don’t have small players” “The NHL is a league of copycats” “Cole Caufield and Lane Hutson won’t make it in the U.S. because they’re too small” “It’s no coincidence that no NHL team dared draft a single defenseman under 6’0 last June.“It’s no coincidence that no NHL team dared draft a single defenseman under 6’0 last June.”We’ve heard them all. Yes, in reality, hockey is a contact sport and you can’t ignore it. Having a team full of 5’7 players would clearly be a bad strategy to put forward, but grafting two or three small, talented players onto a well-balanced line-up can’t be considered a bad idea. Thehardest thing in the NHL is scoring goals, and when one guy scores so many(Allo Cole) and another sets up so many(Allo Lane), you can’t ignore it and say to yourself: they’re (too) small.

No, these two guys aren’t too small for today’s NHL.(Credit: Getty Images)

[content-ads]Since signing his contract, Lane Hutson has three points in two games, as well as a plus-3 cumulative differential. Meanwhile,we’ve got another prob-Laine up front, but that’s another story…Cole Caufield is just too clutch. He’s scored five goals so far this campaign, ranking third in the NHL behind Pavel Dorofeyev and Shane Pinto. Even more impressive: all five of Caufield’s goals have come on big occasions. On Saturday, he scored the game’s first goal in the second period. On Tuesday, he replied to the Kraken’s first goal in the second, before scoring the winner in overtime. Yesterday, he tied the game with just 20 seconds left on the clock, before once again scoring the winning goal in overtime. Let’s start calling him Mr. Overtime. Or Golden Cole! [content-ads]The Canadiens are first in the Atlantic this morning, and without their two little American players, they certainly wouldn’t be there. Martin St-Louis wanted to see his men get off to a good start this season, and without his two little Americans, he probably wouldn’t have one right now. You get the idea. Let’s hope for Lane and Cole’s sake that Team USA gets the idea too. Only relying on a player’s size isn’t enough in 2025. #TalentFirst #BalanceFinally, my grandmother was also right about sport: in small jars, the best ointments. Like…[spacer title=’Prolongation’]- Jayden Struble had to play and he did well in his limited role last night. The same must happen with Joe Veleno… and it’s Patrik Laine who’ll have to step aside in my opinion – A thought for the HFTV guys who, after years of misery outside the Bell Centre, are having a great time after the games this year. #Patience– For those of you who think we like the negative better than the positive when covering the Canadiens, you’re in the ballpark! We much prefer what’s going on right now to the three rebuilding seasons – I wonder if Martin Lemay still thinks Cole Caufield is a pushover for Nick Suzuki… – Machine Gun Kelly at the Super Bowl at the Grey Cup. #JaimeÇa

Kaiden Guhle’s injury: no cause for concern last night

Yesterday, Kaiden Guhle had a hard time getting off the ice: while skating, he seemed to feel a sharp pain in his leg. He quickly made his way to the bench and didn’t exactly eat up the minutes late in the game. Here’s how he reacted

Of necessity, a certain amount of concern has settled in town. After all, Guhle is the kind of defenseman who can’t always stay healthy.David Reinbacher… Kirby Dach… Kaiden Guhle… we’re holding our breath more and more with these three guys when there’s contact on the ice.But the question on everyone’s mind this morning is: how’s Guhle doing? The question was put to Renaud Lavoie this morning on BPM Sports’ Morning Club. And the journalist provided a breath of optimism:[content-ads] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIOY9kPFnOw After the game, the defender wasn’t giving his club any cause for concern, according to the journalist. That, of course, is excellent news under the circumstances for a defenseman the Habs can’t exactly afford to lose. That said, we don’t know if the Habs wanted to calm things down, and we don’t know how the defenseman feels this morning. And since the Canadiens have the day off, I’m not holding my breath today and don’t expect a medical update until tomorrow. We’ve seen this before: guys who are fine at the time of injury, but not so fine afterwards. Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays is an excellent example,so the news about Guhle is encouraging and we seem to be a long way from the guy who reacted as if his injury was serious. Overtime]- Yesterday was a great night to be a has-been.

– Happy birthday to Francis Bouillon.

Lane Hutson is right: Cole Caufield (Mr. Prolongation) deserves to go to the Olympics

Do you have the feeling that Cole Caufield can score in important moments? That’s right, when you look at his five goals this season, you can see that the diminutive forward often scores in the important moments… and his last three goals are good examples of that. He scored in overtime against Seattle on Tuesday, tied the score with 19 seconds to play yesterday and gave his club the win(3-2 over Nashville) as overtime drew to a close.

No, never count the Canadiens out.in fact,Caufield is so good in overtime that he’s now at the top of the Canadiens’ all-time list for overtime goals with 10.He’s helped by the three-on-three, but to join Max Pacioretty and Howie Morenz at the top of that list is interesting for a guy who’s only been in the league since 2021.

And while we’re at it, no player has scored 10 overtime goals in fewer games (292) than he has in the history of the National League [content-ads]All this to say that the guy is clutch. He’s playing 200 feet more and more, and his scoring touch is insane. That’s why Lane Hutson is right: the Americans, who lost in overtime in the Four Nations Confrontation final, need to consider Cole Caufield’s candidacy.

His father no doubt has Nick Suzuki saying he should represent Canada.Hutson himself isn’t sure he’ll make the club(he’s only just been added to his preliminary roster), but he’s preaching to the choir. I don’t know how much the U.S. wants smaller players, but the two guys are helping each other out right now.content-ads]It’s crazy, though, that yesterday’s game ended on such an exciting note… when you remember how plaaaaaaaaaate the game was to begin with. With the Blue Jays on the other shift, what game were you listening to?Not only did the club find a way to win, it did so in dramatic fashion. Just betting on comebacks isn’t sustainable, but it shows that the guys in the club believe in themselves. You have to give Caufield credit, obviously, but you also have to give credit to their defenders. Mike Matheson made a great play in overtime on the winning goal, and what about Hutson, who’s out of his mind with his contract situation AND seems faster than ever on the ice since the start of the season?

The best were the best at the best of times yesterday. What else will I take away from this game, which represents a fourth straight win in five games this season for Martin St-Louis’ men? [content-ads]1. The coach wanted a better start to the season? It’s too early to analyze the standings, but the Habs are in first place in their division, with a .800 record. That’s exactly what it took. 2. The top talent in this club is obvious. It’s different from what we’ve seen in the past, and it means that Nick Suzuki (who is an excellent passer) can miss 2356 chances in overtime without it being the talk of the town. One day, he’ll have to score… but the club’s winning, so it’s less of an issue.3. Jakub Dobes is a good goalkeeper. He kept his club in the game and was able to score another win – his second in as many games this season. Cole Caufield enjoyed it, anyway. That play in overtime saved his. And even if he didn’t manage to carry the puck into another dimension before the referee’s whistle, he saved his team from a setback.Well done.

[content-ads]4. The Habs will have to work on their powerplay, which was 0-in-3 yesterday. And since the club also gave up a goal to the short-handed Preds, we note that the special units could have killed the club last night. That’s something to work on. 5. Oliver Kapanen has good hockey sense. He knows how to position himself well, and since the start of the season, he’s often found the back of the net. The European understands that Joe Veleno is waiting for his chance, and he wants nothing to do with visiting the Bell Centre gangway in preparation for tomorrow night’s game against the Rangers.

6. We almost forget that at the start of the game, we wanted to change everything following an ordinary game. There were defensive changes, in particular, when Jayden Struble went from the stands to “Lane Hutson’s playing partner” in just a few minutes of play.

[spacer title=’prolongation’]Because Martin St-Louis decided to give his flock the day off today, we shouldn’t see the Canadiens give a medical update on Kaiden Guhle.

Guhle didn’t immediately head to the dressing room, but he didn’t play at the end of the game. We’re not sure what that means, since the club was down a goal and it wasn’t his place to eat up minutes under the circumstances, but the Habs can’t afford to lose him.

Top-5: An official makes a mistake with his goal verdict

Yesterday, the Canadiens miraculously won the game against the Predators. 10 other games were on the schedule. Here are the results and highlights of those games:

1. An official gets his goal verdict wrongFlorida had a good start to the season winning its first three games, but lately it’s been getting tougher. The Panthers have lost their last three games. It’s true that not having Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk doesn’t help.

Yesterday, the highlight of the game wasn’t a player, but an official. He got it wrong when he handed in a goal verdict after a challenge.

Paul Maurice didn’t look too impressed… For the Devils, Jack Hughes shone with this superb goal, his first of the year.

Timo Meier picked up two points, while Jake Allen stopped 21 of 22 shots [content-ads]2. Hurricanes still unbeatenThe Hurricanes are still the only unbeaten team on the Bettman circuit, having beaten the Ducks 4-1 yesterday and now have a 4-0-0 record. The Avalanche and Golden Knights didn’t lose on a regular basis either, but dropped points in overtime and/or shootouts. Jacob Trouba did everything he could to prevent the mighty Canes from scoring, but his efforts were insufficient.

Seth Jarvis was in charge of the forwards, scoring his 100th and 101st career goals.

Russia’s Alexander Nikishin scored his first NHL goal.

This season, he has four points in as many games.

[content-ads]3. “This is the mistake that will make Evan Bouchard go south at the Olympics”For the past few years, Evan Bouchard has been recognized as one of the NHL’s best offensive defensemen. But defensively, he’s one of the worst. Yesterday, he made an unforgivable mistake.

After making the mistake, Mark Spector didn’t pull any punches. He said it’s the mistake that will ensure he won’t be at the Olympics representing Team Canada, but in Turks & Caicos. Ouch. The defenseman finished the game with a minus-3 record…

Edmonton gave the Islanders their first win of the season. Final score: 4-2. The big hero of the game was Bo Horvat. He scored a hat trick: a shorthanded goal, a power-play goal and an empty-net goal.

Here he is with five points from four games so far this season [content-ads]4. A first goal this season for Matvei MichkovIn his first three games of the season, Matvei Michkov still hadn’t collected any points. The man who didn’t arrive in form at camp finally broke the ice yesterday.

The Russian also finished the game with two shots on goal. Unfortunately for Philadelphia, the Jets were too strong. Winnipeg won 5-2. With two goals, Mark Scheifele tied Blake Wheeler for the most points in Jets history.

Kyle Connor also shined with two assists [content-ads]5. Auston Matthews and Anthony Stolarz take care of the RangersSince the start of the season, the Rangers have really struggled to score. In fact, they still haven’t scored at home. Yesterday, they played in Toronto and were unable to foil Anthony Stolarz more than once, who never stopped shining throughout the game.

New York will have nightmares about this… It was complicated, but the visitors finally scored.

That goal was enough to force overtime, but not to win the game.

In overtime, Auston Matthews completed a superb play by William Nylander to seal the game.

Final score: 2-1. [spacer title=’Prolongation’] – At least he’s back.

Jakub Dobes in net tonight | Arber Xhekaj in the stands

Let’s talk about the Canadiens’ line-up: tonight, when the Nashville Predators come to town, the Canadiens will have a slightly different line-up than we’ve seen all season. We say this because Jayden Struble didn’t work overtime at optional practice this morning. That said, Arber Xhekaj stayed with Joe Veleno, so

In hockey parlance, that means Veleno won’t play tonight and Struble will make his debut in 2025-2026, so it’s no surprise to see Struble enter the lineup. Not only does he deserve to play, but Xhekaj has seen his playing time melt away recently. The next step was the stands. As for Veleno, he’ll have to be patient for a while yet. None of the 12 forwards in the line-up deserve to go out, and the Habs have won their last three games. Turning everything upside down wouldn’t necessarily have been productive. And in front of the net, there will also be a change. Jakub Dobes, who has to play once in a while and who had an excellent camp, will get a second start this season.

The Canadiens have four straight games at home, but no two games in two nights. Martin St-Louis wasn’t obliged to play #2, but it’s a good idea to do so, just to see what he’s got.And since it certainly wasn’t going to happen on Saturday night (against the Rangers), today’s a good time to do it.[spacer title=’Overtime’]- Interesting.

😅🤣

– That’s good.

– Stability is important.

– Wait before talking about expansion… according to the Commissioner’s official statement.

Top-4: Two of the worst teams score eight goals

Like many Wednesdays, there weren’t a ton of games on the schedule last night. Eight teams were in action. Here are the results and highlights:

1. Sabres score eight goals against SensIn Buffalo, the Senators were playing their first game in their new uniform. Very nice!

Like many third uniforms, it was unlucky. Ottawa lost 8-4… to the Buffalo Sabres. The loss of Brady Tkachuk hurts…

The Sabres won their first game of the season and have the same record as Ottawa (1-3-0).

In the win, Buffalo scored four special-team goals, their first since 2018.

[content-ads]2. Big of the Blackhawks wins in St. LouisThe Sabres weren’t the only ones to score a touchdown and a two-point conversion yesterday. The Blackhawks, too, did it against the St. Louis Blues. Chicago won 8-3. I’m very impressed with Chicago this early in the season. The club has a 2-2-1 record. In the win, Frank Nazar continued his good start to the season by scoring a rather special goal. In fact, it was the winning goal.

Joel Hofer was also in the news, but for all the wrong reasons. He gave the first goal of the game to Ilya Mikheyev on a silver platter.

Connor Bedard, meanwhile, finished the game with three assists.Check this one out:

[content-ads]3. Utah reveals its mascotLast night was the first home game in Mammoth history, and for the occasion the second-year club revealed its new mascot.

The Flames, despite a fine performance from their second goalkeeper Devin Cooley, didn’t play the spoilsport. A 3-1 victory for the hosts, though it was the visitors who scored first. Rasmus Andersson

ames

🔥

Tied 1-1, J.J. Peterka scored a beautiful goal. The Sabres must regret trading him, that one.

In four games this season, the forward has two goals and an assist [content-ads]4. Third win in a row for the Red WingsSince the Habs beat the Wings, they haven’t lost again. They’ve won their last three games. Most recently (yesterday), they beat the two-time defending champions 4-1. Without Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk, some forwards have to step up. That’s what Brad Marchand did, scoring the team’s only goal.

Patrick Kane, for his part, isn’t known as the best maverick in history.

But yesterday, he beat Sergei Bobrovsky with a perfect shot.

It was the winning goal, by the way.Dylan Larkin, Mason Appleton, Michael Rasmussen and Alex DeBrincat all picked up two points in the win. Detroit is in first place in the Atlantic. spacer title=’Prolongation’] –

Carter Hart in Vegas: all signs point to better pay than many teammates

As you know, Carter Hart is on his way back to the NHL. While the other four players on the Junior Team Canada roster aren’t necessarily expected to return to the NHL, it’s a different story with the goaltender. Why? Because he seems to be talented enough to make it worth his while Because he seems to be talented enough to make it worth his while. More and more, we’ve seen the name of the Golden Knights being bandied about. It’s been clear for a while now that this is probably the most logical destination for him, and now all indications are that this is indeed what’s going to happen.

[content-ads]Looking at Cam Robinson’s tweet, we quickly realize that the chances of the Golden Knights being the only ones in the running are pretty slim.

After all, why give him a contract worth a potential $3.6M (two years at $1.8M, including a prorated 2025-2026 season) if you’re the only one in the running?

Already a tight payroll in Vegas.at potentially $1.8M per year, he’ll obviously earn more than Colton Sissons ($1.4M), Cole Reinhardt ($0.81M), Ben Hutton ($0.98M) and Kaedan Korczak (.83M), all guys who aren’t on their entry-level contracts for the Golden Knights. And that’s not counting Akira Schmid ($875,000), who earns less than Hart and is expected to lose his NHL job in December.

So even though we know the Hurricanes got out of the deal to avoid being linked to the Team Canada junior scandal, I’d like to think that other clubs wanted him. Otherwise, Vegas will obviously have just given too much money to a guy who certainly didn’t have much bargaining power. But we’ll have to see if the rumours materialize, and what kind of deal he signs. Finally, it’s worth noting that Hart is set to reunite with Dominique Ducharme in Vegas. The former Canadiens driver, now an assistant in Nevada, was Team Canada’s coach when the events at ECJ unfolded. [spacer title=’Overtime’]- The Blue Jays won, yesterday.

– Jeff Gorton won’t set a timetable on the end of the rebuild. [TVAS] – You’d think, by now.

– It’s not easy for Logan Mailloux.

– Cute.

A fourth straight win for the Canadiens thanks to Cole Caufield

The Canadiens were looking for their fourth consecutive win when they welcomed the Predators to the Bell Centre. For the occasion, Jayden Struble joined the line-up for the first time this season. Here’s the lineup for both teams:

The first period was very quiet for both teams. The Predators had a good chance to score, but Jakub Dobes kept his cool to close the door.

Despite the quiet first period, there were a few moments from the pairing of Jayden Struble and Lane Hutson. This duo had done well on a few occasions last season, so after 20 minutes of play, the score was still 0-0. [content-ads] The second period saw a little more attacking action. The Canadiens fired 10 shots on Juuse Saros’ net, but were unable to score. The Predators again fired six shots on net, but were able to beat Dobes. Steven Stamkos fired a shot on the powerplay that deflected off Kaiden Guhle.

It was a first goal this season for Stamkos. Nashville came close to adding more moments later thanks to a good weird bounce, but Struble came to his goalie’s rescue.

After two periods, the Canadiens were trailing 1-0. [content-ads] Montreal needed to respond in the third period after two boring periods. Oliver Kapanen was insistent to get the Habs on the scoreboard.

Kapanen’s third goal of the season allowed him to join Zachary Bolduc and Cole Caufield at the top of the Habs scoring charts. Mike Matheson then had an excellent chance to score, but was denied by Saros. The puck then jumped into Predators possession and Nick Perbix didn’t miss his chance to score.

The Canadiens held their breath moments later when Kaiden Guhle stayed on the ground for long seconds before heading to the team bench by himself.

It looked very painful, but he stayed in the game.

Montreal pulled their goalie in the final minutes of the game. It was the right strategy, as Cole Caufield managed to score his fourth goal of the season with an excellent wrist shot.

Lane Hutson saved the game with a save in front of the empty net and the long pass for the goal, so overtime was needed in this game. Habs fans were heartbroken to see a Nick Suzuki shot hit the crossbar. Then, near the end of overtime, Dobes closed the door on a breakaway with a superb glove save. Cole Caufield finally confirmed the Canadiens’ victory with just two seconds left in overtime.

Montreal won 3-2 in overtime for their fourth consecutive victory. The Canadiens return to action on Saturday, when they host the New York Rangers at the Bell Centre. [spacer title=’Prolongation’] – Good news:

– The Trois-Rivières Lions were at the Bell Centre.

– The first two periods were flat.

– It’s a good show.

– Not a good night for the first powerplay wave.

The time Samuel Montembeault failed to identify himself when delivering drugs

In the summer of 2022, Samuel Montembeault’s mother was working in a Victoriaville pharmacy, and found herself short of delivery drivers, as one was ill and the other on vacation. During his appearance on the Drette su’l tape podcast, Montembeault recounted the story of how he became a delivery driver for a day.Montembeault replaced the absent delivery drivers. He remembers delivering medicines and other products to many people. He worked until 9 p.m. The worst part was that nobody recognized him, even though he had just played his first season with the Canadiens. He’d found himself in front of the Habs cage 38 times during the 2021-22 season, so it’s understandable that he went unnoticed. Montembeault isn’t the most extroverted guy, especially around people he doesn’t know [content-ads] Another reason he went unrecognized may be that he wasn’t yet the Habs’ number-one goalie. He shared the cage with Jake Allen and Cayden Primeau, but one lady recognized him, albeit late. She went to the pharmacy where Montembeault’s mother worked to confirm that she had indeed been served by a Canadiens player. It’s nice to see a player willing to do his mother a favor like that. Let’s just say that on an NHL salary, he didn’t necessarily need a deliveryman’s paycheck for one day.[spacer title=’Overtime’] – Del Zotto is a big Ivan Demidov fan.
