Emil Heineman and Jonathan Drouin on the Islanders’ top line

Let’s talk about the Islanders: journalist Stefen Rosner has published the trios from Patrick Roy’s club’s practice today. Why do I say that? Because the club’s first unit features Jonathan Drouin and Emil Heineman, alongside Bo Horvat, the club’s best forward. That’s a big vote of confidence.

[content-ads]Both former Canadiens have talent. You can’t take that away from them. But to play on the first line of an NHL club in the first game of the regular season? To me, that says a lot about the Islanders, who have no depth and no playoff club. If the guys are rewarded by their camp, that’s okay. But as I said, it still speaks volumes about the state of the franchise. But at the same time, in Montreal, Oliver Kapanen is playing with Ivan Demidov, to everyone’s surprise – or almost.

It should also be noted that Alexander Romanov, who just signed a good contract in New York, is on the club’s first pair of defensemen. In Montreal, that wouldn’t be the case for him. But above all, we see that Anthony Duclair, who ended last season on a bad note (in bickering with Patrick Roy), is placed on the fourth line to start. That’snot a good start.Obviously, what’s true before the first game of the season isn’t necessarily true a few weeks later. But let’s just say that the New York Roy is showing his colors. [spacer title=’en rafale’]-

Lane Hutson: more important agents are now working on his case

Officially, Lane Hutson’s agent is Sean Coffey, who is recognized in the industry as an emerging agent. He’s working with Hutson on behalf of Quartexx, which is Kent Hughes’ old company.Yes, another Habs player who’s with Quartexx. But what you need to know right now is that negotiations between the Habs and Hutson’s clan are so difficult that bigger agents are on the case. According to Darren Dreger, who spoke to TSN 690 this morning, Ryan Barnes has taken the matter into his own hands. Darren Ferris, a big name in the business, is said to be overseeing the whole thing. According to TVA Sports, Barnes is the agency’s director of operations in the U.S. The goal? Agree on an amount, but also find a way to settle the “philosophical differences” that mean the contract has yet to be signed.

[content-ads]It’s important to remember, though, that Hutson’s clan doesn’t have a huge amount of leverage in negotiations, as he’s quite far from complete autonomy.

Everyone has an opinion on the matter, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that the file is becoming a distraction. That’s the $72 million question, and it’s worth remembering that the Canadiens’ GM and the (new) team representing the player could meet tomorrow in Detroit, on the heels of the Habs’ visit to Michigan.

Will this change things in an increasingly complex matter? [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Not crazy.

– Indeed.

– Hey boy.

Stanley25: A Habs-filled summer of 2025

As an influential Québécois musical group of the 2000s so aptly sang: we’re back. And I’m not just talking about the Canadiens, who will officially be back against the Maple Leafs in Toronto. I’mtalking about the Stanley25 podcast, whose 31st episode – we’re still doing 10-episode seasons – was recorded yesterday afternoon and released in the last few hours. This fourth season of Stanley25 will be a little different from the previous three, however; I’ll only be taking part in a few episodes, due to my busy schedule and my role covering the activities of CF Montreal. Let’s just say it was hard to fit it all into the schedule … and to make covering a professional team and the podcast fit philosophically. What did JT and I talk about during this first episode?

The QMJHL Foundation Golf Classic, our summer encounters with Dominick Saillant (former Habs communications director) and Mitch (custom security guard for the Canadiens), Montreal players who took part in a few Montreal festivals over the summer, Lasso’safter-party , FC Supra du Québec, professional teams that are increasingly setting up shop in Laval rather than Montreal, insults and people’s behavior on social networks.. and in real life, the contract and father of Lane Hutson, Joshua Roy, Patrik Laine, Logan Mailloux, the 1001 podcasts born in recent weeks, the Rocket broadcast on Sick Media, Samuel Blais, Zachary Bolduc, Richard Martineau and QUB Radio, a Habs golf day in Quebec City, the Maple Leafs, taxes and their impact on each team’s payroll, the City of Montreal and its refusal to host the French or English team for several weeks, the youth and toughness of the Habs, Michael Hage’s season debut and a professional athlete who rents JT’s condo.
[content-ads]

“Joshua Roy, he did crossfit this summer. Did you see this article? That’s Nicolas Cloutier doing a great job, then having to do crossfit too because his arms got bigger… he’s off to the gym with Joshua Roy: Joshua Roy is in the best shape he’s ever been in, this is going to be his best season (according to his summer trainer). But he’s the same Joshua Roy. Camp has started, he’s still skating straight and he’s lacking a bit of explosion, he’s not defending as much, but he still has great vision […] just because you have two quality WODs at crossfit doesn’t mean you’re going to be a better NHL player.More often than not, when an organization decides to blow things out of proportion, there’s something fishy going on. Why are they trying to shove as much down our throats as Patrik Laine…”

In the end, we still see the Habs giving us a great winter and extending their season in the spring. Before you say we’re pessimistic and always negative…[spacer title=’Overtime’]- Good flash.

– Another contract in Edmonton.

– Will it happen soon?

– Samuel Blais left out tonight?

Juraj Slafkovsky is fed up with excuses: he wants to “stop talking and perform”

The Canadiens’ off-season is well and truly behind us. Tonight, the club will play a real game in Toronto. After months of speculation and personnel moves to improve the club, we’ll have our first opportunity (of at least 82) to see the club in action. Will Martin St-Louis’ men, despite their youth, do better than last year?

Obviously, if the Habs want to do better than last year, it’s going to take a contribution from everyone. All 18 skaters (and the goalie) will have to play as a team, but on some nights, the best will have to be the best. No matter how old they are, the members of the first line will have to step up and go for the win. Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield don’t have a history of bad performances in October or November. content-ads]When you put it that way, you realize that yes, Juraj Slafkovsky will have some pressure on his shoulders to start the season, and he knows it. In an interview with Arpon Basu of The Athletic, the Slovak said he didn’t just want to say he had to do better: he wanted it to show on the ice.

What I found interesting was Slaf’s admission that his summer of work in 2025 was quite a bit more productive than in 2024.

Maybe the year before, I was too comfortable, I don’t know. But I feel that my summer (2025) was harder and better than the one before. I don’t know why, but that’s my feeling.

Juraj Slafkovsky

Remember that in the summer of 2024, he had just signed an eight-year contract and enjoyed a magnificent end to the season. Slaf has never been afraid to criticize himself publicly. I look forward to the day when he doesn’t have to [spacer title=’Overtime’]- Oh, yeah?

Kyle Connor’s contract: Kent Hughes must take advantage of Nick Suzuki’s discounted contract

The more time passes, the more it becomes clear that Kyle Connor won’t be leaving the Jets. The forward is set to sign an eight-year contract (effective next summer) at close to $12 million per year. With

Elliotte Friedman, in a piece on the subject, reported that the Jets have not only agreed to go where the club has never gone in terms of salary, but that a no-trade clause is also in the contract, as are big bonuses early in the deal. The club refused to do this before, but they’re adapting. And for a player like him, the Jets had no choice.

[content-ads]But the fact remains that $12M a year for a guy who has only two 80+ point seasons in his career and has never reached the 100-point mark is a good amount.

We can’t compare him to Connor McDavid, who took a discount, but… it’s a reminder that prices are going up.Connor, who isn’t a center, still deserves his contract, since he’s still quite a player and prices are going up. But it alsoreminds us that, had Nick Suzuki not signed a long-term contract with Marc Bergevin, he too would be eligible for full autonomy in the summer of 2026. And as a top center, he’d be asking for quite a bit of money. It’s a good reminder to Kent Hughes that he needs to take advantage of the fact that his top line (and other guys, like Kaiden Guhle and Noah Dobson) are signed long-term to win while they’re signed on reasonable contract terms. In my opinion, the GM already knows this. And I think that while he knows he has to be patient with his players (which is not wrong), Hughes also figures that getting off to a good start this season is important.

Top-3: 20th season together for Crosby, Letang and Malkin

At last, the NHL regular season has begun. Here are the results and highlights from the three games:

1. 20th season together for Crosby, Letang and MalkinYesterday, the Penguins were in New York to take on the Rangers. That meant Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang were starting the season together, again. This is the 20th season in which all three have played at least one game together.

In a 3-0 victory, Evgeni Malkin made his mark with a superb pass on Justin Brazeau’s first goal.

His first with the Penguins.

Brazeau followed up with a breakaway goal.

Dan Muse’s first win in his first game behind an NHL bench.

Rangers coach Mike Sullivan suffered his first setback with his new team, against his old team, him.

[content-ads]2. Double champions make their entranceLate in the afternoon, the two-time defending champions the Florida Panthers made their entrance, taking on the Chicago Blackhawks and, for the occasion, raising their banner high above their arena.

The celebrations didn’t last long, as as soon as the game started, the Blackhawks scored. Frank Nazar, who finished the game with a goal and an assist, scored the first goal of the 2025-2026 season.

Florida fought back, however, and the fourth line scored the second goal of the season.

At the mouth of the net, Carter Verhaeghe then gave the Panthers the lead.

What a shot in the top corner.

Final score: 3-2 Florida, making a successful entrance. The Stanley Cup is back on the market, though.

[content-ads]3. Nathan MacKinnon overtakes Joe SakicLate in the evening, the Kings hosted the Colorado Avalanche, but it was the visitors who came out on top, 4-1. A few weeks ago, we learned that Anze Kopitar was playing his last year in the Bettman circuit.

In his team’s victory, Nathan MacKinnon picked up two assists, passing Joe Sakic for the most points in Avalanche history with 1016. His second assist was his 1017th point.

New season, same Cale Makar. On this sequence, he did everything for Artturi Lehkonen to score his first of the year.

Los Angeles scored their first goal of the night, but it was too little too late.

[spacer title=’Prolongation’] – Still.

– We can’t help but be impressed.

– Now that’s cool.

Lane Hutson’s contract: “It’s obvious that it annoys the youngster”

Much has been written about Lane Hutson in recent days. We know that Habs management and his agent have been talking, and that the team has made offers. The October 7 deadline for a deferred-money contract has passed. Elliotte Friedman mentioned that the two sides needed an emotional break before eventually sitting down again. But how long should this break last? Not too long, believes Tiger Michel Bergeron. He spoke to JiC about it today, and

“I don’t like it that much, because it obviously annoys the kid and the organization.” – Michel Bergeron [content-ads] He added that he believes it could eventually become a distraction, and that his family members are going to know about certain things. I don’t think it can be a distraction for the team and for him. First of all, there’s still a year left on his contract with the team. It’s a far cry from Connor McDavid’s situation with the Oilers, let’s say. That’s why we need to take a deep breath, as Friedman suggests. There’s no hurry and we mustn’t let this become a distraction for the team. The contract will be signed in due course. Hutson loves playing in Montreal, he loves the team and the core. I think he’s going to leave some money on the table, but not as much as people think. spacer title=’Overtime’] – Interesting to watch.

– What a game in New York.

– Beautiful goal.

– To be continued.

“He’s probably the best defenseman I’ve seen in the QMJHL (in 16 years)”

The Habs season finally kicks off tomorrow. It’s one of the best days of the year, because we can turn the page on the summer and the preseason games. It’s also a fresh start for the new members of the team, including Noah Dobson. To be honest, he didn’t show the full extent of his talent in the preparatory games, as my colleague Maxime Truman described. Despite this, Denis Gauthier has a very good opinion of the defenseman, a very good one indeed.

“He’s probably the best defenseman I’ve seen in my first 16 years of coaching, of the defensemen who have come through the QMJHL” -Denis Gauthier

[content-ads] Gauthier mentions that Dobson isn’t an offensive dynamo like Hutson, nor a player who scores 2 points a game either, but that he’s capable of taking control of a game. The former Flames defenseman boasted of his aura in a game, but let’s not kid ourselves: the Habs went out and got an excellent player, a first-pair defenseman for sure. He has all the qualities of a complete defenseman, despite the poor sample we saw in the preparatory game. Gauthier is absolutely right, and I wonder how long the Matheson experiment will last. Without taking anything away from Matheson, I believe that Kaiden Guhle and Dobson will eventually form the team’s first duo, and for a long time to come. We’ll have to be patient with Dobson, but I have no doubt that he’ll be quite a defenseman for the Habs. [spacer title=’Overtime’] – Predictions from a statistical model.

– Here we go.

– Very normal.

Powerplay: Patrik Laine, Ivan Demidov and Noah Dobson on the second wave

We’ve been waiting a long time for answers to our questions. This morning in Brossard, at practice, the Canadiens practiced their two powerplay waves as well as their two shorthanded waves. Here’s what they came up with, courtesy of Patrick Guillet.

Note that the club’s first line was with Lane Hutson and Zachary Bolduc on the first wave. Bolduc with the Nick Suzuki gang is probably the biggest surprise, but I like it. #GoodShotThat must mean that the second wave is good… and the first better perform to get some playing time. NoahDobson, Patrik Laine and Ivan Demidov, all candidates for the first wave, are on the second unit. Brendan Gallagher and Kirby Dach are also on the second unit. Did we want to spread out the forces? Keep the snipers on different waves? Possibly. [content-ads]In any case, we note that Patrik Laine won’t be playing with the most offensive players on his line (Jake Evans and Josh Anderson) and that he’ll be far from Suzuki and Hutson on the power play. Not optimal for him, you say? Not at all. But it’s up to him to earn himself some playing time…

The other eight skaters who will play tomorrow have been practicing at a numerical disadvantage. Jake Evans and Josh Anderson were with Mike Matheson (no longer playing on the powerplay, for now) and Kaiden Guhle.Oliver Kapanen, Alex Newhook, Alexandre Carrier and Arber Xhekaj were in the second wave.[spacer title=’Overtime’]- Of note.

A point a game for Lane Hutson: Renaud Lavoie believes in it

For the past few days, if not weeks, there’s been a lot of talk about Lane Hutson’s contract negotiations. Obviously, the American will become a restricted free agent on July 1, so there’s no press. In fact, according to the latest news, the negotiations are getting too emotional, so the people involved need to take a break. Elliotte Friedman said it yesterday and Darren Dreger said it again today on Early Trading.

Obviously, both sides want to close the deal and there are still a few details to be finalized. The player’s camp would like a six-year contract. But with a view to the 2025-2026 season, the defenseman still has a contract, and his focus is on his play on the ice, not his contract. This summer, he’s been doing a lot of practice and trying to improve his shot, among other things [content-ads] As Renaud Lavoie told BPM Sports, he’s clearly confident in his shot this season, as in three preparatory games, he’s taken the most shots among defensemen (11). The journalist even went so far as to say that he believed in Hutson’s chances of reaching the point-per-game mark. In Montreal, for a defenseman to finish the season with at least one point per game, this hasn’t happened since 1986.

You think Lane Hutson is going to have a tough second season like many players who had a good rookie season? Think again, the 48 is better than ever. And unlike last year, the left-hander will start the season on the first power play, which is another argument in his quest for points per game. spacer title=’Overtime’] – Who’s lucky?

– Yes.

– Nikita Kucherov, Nathan MacKinnon’s favorite player.
