As Netflix cracks down on password sharing in Canada, it’s dropping prices in other countries

While Netflix is attempting to squeeze more money out of Canadians by charging for password sharing, it’s cutting the cost of its streaming service in parts of Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.

The cuts apply to specific pricing tiers, with the cost being discounted by half in some countries. In a statement to several publications, Netflix said the following regarding the price cuts:

“We’re always exploring ways to improve our members’ experience. We can confirm that we are updating the pricing of our plans in certain countries.”

Canada, the U.S. and most of Europe are not included in the list of countries receiving a discount. As of February 21st, Netflix is charging $7.99 per person to share your streaming account with friends or family on top of the standard monthly subscription cost, and this option is only available to ‘Premium’ ($20.99/month) and ‘Standard’ ($16.49/month) subscribers.

Given we’re only a few days into Netflix’s password sharing crackdown, it’s still unclear how the streaming giant intends to enforce the new rules, though it’s assumed those using someone else’s Netflix account will eventually be locked out based on their IP address. According to Netflix, subscribers must log into their Netflix account from their home internet connection (with their smartphone, for example) once every 30 days to access the streaming service outside of their homes. Netflix’s password sharing fee is also rolling out in New Zealand, Portugal and Spain first before eventually making its way to other regions.

Specific countries that have received a Netflix price cut include Kenya, Iran, Venezuela, Croatia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. Netflix is currently available in 190 countries.

CRTC directs wireless providers to engage with disabled Canadians to address service issues

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has directed wireless service providers to address various concerns, and barriers Canadians with disabilities face through “regular consultations.”

Barriers include accessible plans, how they offer data, and how providers verify Canadians’ eligibility to access these plans. Providers are also responsible for filing reports, starting June 1st, detailing the outcomes of the consultations.

“The purpose is to assess whether accessible plans are offered and promoted in a way that fully meets their needs and if not, what changes are required to ensure barrier-free access to these plans,” the Commission’s analysis states.

The order is part of proceedings launched in 2020 to examine barriers Canadians with disabilities face. As of November 2021, 14,453 Canadians subscribed to either accessibility plans or received an accessibility-related discount, a past order shows.

“While certain large WSPs have seen a significant increase in subscribers to accessible plans in recent years, the Commission considers the reported total number of 14,453 subscribers to these plans to be significantly lower than could have been expected,” the CRTC says.

Providers are mandated to include views from various parties representing many disabilities. The Commission also wants providers to examine providing financial aid to community reps for the consultations.

Canadian privacy regulators investigating TikTok’s use of personal user information

Social media platform TikTok is facing an investigation from Canada’s privacy officers.

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner, along with counterparts in Quebec, B.C. and Alberta, will investigate if the platform’s collection, use and disclosure of personal information comply with Canada’s privacy laws.

Given TikTok’s popularity with younger Canadians, the investigation will focus on the platform’s privacy practices in relation to younger users. This includes if the platform gained consent to use personal information.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada will investigate the company’s compliance under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. The Quebec faction will focus on the Act Respecting the Protection of Personal Information in the Private Sector and the Act to Establish a Legal Framework for Information Technology. Counterparts in B.C. and Alberta will focus on the Personal Information Protection Act.

Chinese company ByteDance owns TikTok.

Apple AirPods (2nd-Gen) drops to $164

While not the newest wireless earbuds on the market, Apple’s second-generation AirPods, released in 2019, are an improved version of the original AirPods. These are currently on sale from Amazon for $164.

The AirPods (2nd-Gen) offers a number of features and upgrades, including wireless charging, improved battery life, improved connectivity, and hands-free “Hey Siri” support.

One of the most significant features of the second-generation AirPods is wireless charging. The AirPods come with a wireless charging case, which allows users to charge their AirPods by simply placing the case on a wireless charging mat.

In terms of battery life, the second-generation AirPods offer improved performance over the original AirPods. With a single charge, users can expect to get around 5 hours of listening time, or 3 hours of talk time. With the charging case, users can get up to 24 hours of listening time or 18 hours of talk time.

The 2nd-Gen AirPods come equipped with Apple’s H1 chip, which offers faster and more stable connectivity than the first-generation AirPods. This makes it easier for users to switch between devices and enjoy a seamless listening experience.

Finally, like the first-generation AirPods, the second-generation AirPods offer hands-free “Hey Siri” support. This allows users to control their music, make phone calls, and more, just by using their voice.

Check them out here at Amazon Canada.

Taking a look at small-town Ontario-inspired Rollergirl [SyrupArcade Cast 4]

On this episode of the SyrupArcade Cast, Brad Shankar and Dean Daley speak to Indigo Doyle, game designer and the creative lead at Toronto-based Pushing Vertices on Rollergirl.

Rollergirl is based on the life of Doyle, a Black woman who grew up in Belleville, Ontario. In the game, you roll around town on rollerblades exploring the neighbourhood as Naomi, a Black 17-year-old doing odd jobs to afford to fix her first car.

As she skates, Naomi listens to music on her MP3 player, and she has a playlist for each of her moods.

The world of the game changes based on the music around you, and songs are linked to the character’s mood in-game, which is then reflected visually throughout Rollergirl.

During the podcast, we ask Doyle about her journey as a game developer and discus representation and diversity. Given it’s Black History Month, we felt it was important to highlight the difficulties Black people face when breaking into the gaming industry.
