MediaTek to unveil its own phone-to-satellite communication system

Taiwan-based semiconductor company MediaTek, which makes chipsets for several companies, including Samsung’s entry-level devices, OnePlus, ASUS, Redmi and more, is set to launch its own phone-to-satellite communication system at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain next week.

The technology can enable two-way satellite communication on smartphones by using a standalone chipset from MediaTek that can be added to any 4G or 5G phone. The company’s move is a response to Qualcomm’s and Apple’s satellite technologies, and the semiconductor company is confident that its technology will work seamlessly with any network that complies with the 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network standard.

According to Engadget, at the MWC event, MediaTek will show off two satellite smartphones, namely, the Motorola defy 2 and CAT S75, alongside a Bluetooth accessory with a MediaTek chip. MediaTek’s technology can receive messages sent via satellite connection, not just send them, as it connects to Geosynchronous Equatorial Orbit satellites instead of satellites in Low Earth Orbit. For reference, Apple’s Emergency SOS feature can only send messages and not can’t receive them.

The Motorola defy 2 smartphone and defy Bluetooth accessory will be released in the second quarter of the year in North America, Latin America, and Canada, and they will be the first devices to offer MediaTek’s satellite capabilities.

The Last of Us’ Pedro Pascal suggests not doing mushrooms and watching hit show

There’s been a lot of talk of mushrooms on the internet thanks to HBO’s The Last of Us. The TV show’s apocalypse is all thanks to the Cordyceps fungus and its haunting effects. Series star Pedro Pascal has come forward with his thoughts on another fungus — the magic mushroom.

During an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Pascal, who plays Joel Miller in the series, talked about working on set and his experiences with the show’s infected. Partially through the interview, Meyers asks Pascal whether working on The Last of Us has put him off from enjoying mushroom dishes like pasta.

“I love mushrooms. All kinds,” Pascal emphasizes. “The kinds in restaurants. The kinds that used to come in a little ziplock bag in the ’90s. And now the kinds that are in these colourful chocolates,” he continues.

Meyers then continues joking about ingesting some psychedelic mushrooms and watching The Last of Us. “That I would not do,” Pascal quickly interjects. “That might put you off it for good. So don’t do that.”

The Last of Us is heavily inspired by and based on the video game franchise from PlayStation’s Naughty Dog. Six episodes into the series and audiences have already faced very heavy and emotional narrative threads. Each episode sees Pascal’s Joel and Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, cross the U.S. in hopes of finding a cure for the Cordecypt virus. Along the way, our two characters stumble upon a cast of characters and horrifying infected.

One infected in particular, dubbed Bloater, has recently built quite the acclaim online. Production and the VFX pulled no punches in replicating the giant enemy from the game and making it a horrifying threat on-screen during the fifth episode of the series. Comprised of grotesque fundal growths, the Bloater became the internet’s number one mushroom. The actor who played infected even went as far as to say “He seems to be a bit of a sex icon.”

Pascal’s comments on the combination of magic mushrooms and the widely successful HBO show are mainly in jest. However, it’s a good to keep in mind as we head toward the final three episodes of the season.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 to feature new hinge and thinner design

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 is fast approaching, and the phone will reportedly come with a brand-new hinge and thinner design.

With the new ‘waterdrop’ hinge, also available on the Oppo Find N2, the Z Fold 5 will measure in at 13mm of thickness when closed, credible leaker Ice Universe said Weibo. This is compared to the Z Fold 4, which is 16mm at its thickest point.

It’s worth noting that the Oppo Find N2 with the same hinge measures over 16mm when closed, giving the Z Fold 5 over Oppo’s foldable. However, Xiaomi’s Mix Fold 2 measures in at 11.2mm when closed, meaning Samsung isn’t breaking any records.

The Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, Tab S9 and Galaxy Watch 6 are rumoured to launch in August.

Apple expected to follow up headset with low-end, high-end models in 2025

Apple is reportedly two low- and high-end models for the second-generation of its rumoured mixed-reality headset for 2025. While the world waits for the company to actually announce its plans for augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), plans are already in motion for Apple’s second stint in the space.

TF International Securities’ Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, published a new Medium post outlining current predictions and survey findings. In it, Kuo states, “Apple’s second-generation AR/MR (mixed reality) headset has two high-end and low-end models.” He goes on to claim that both the low-end and high-end follow-ups are to be made by Luxcaseict and Foxconn. Currently, the launch schedule “for both models will likely be in 2025.”

It’s widely believed Apple plans to innovate and continue supporting its AR/VR efforts with a second-gen headset in 2025. However, Kuo’s predictions of Apple incorporating not one but two entry-level and premium devices are new. Last year, Kuo noted that the Cupertino company may be developing a more affordable headset. However, at the time, there wasn’t an indication of more than one SKU per pricing model.

Much like last year’s predictions, Kuo’s post doesn’t delve deep into what the high-end model will offer as opposed to the low-end headsets. However, a more cost-effective option will likely be welcomed by many eager users.

Kuo also claims that Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Pegatron is likely to “transfer the AR/MR development team and production resources to [Pegatron and Luxshare joint venture] Luxcaseict.” This transition is expected to begin during the first half of 2023.

The first device to kick off Apple’s AR/VR initiatives is expected to launch this year. The headset is rumoured to come with a substantial price tag of $3,000 USD (roughly $4,092 CAD). With that, Apple is expected to deliver dual 4K screens, an array of camera modules, eye tracking, hand gesture support, and be powered by a chip similar to the M-series.

It may not be long until we see Apple’s headset at long last. Recent reports claim it may be shown at Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC).

YouTube is planning to introduce a ‘1080p Premium’ resolution

YouTube already offers the majority of its videos at 1080p full high definition (FHD) resolution, but the platform is looking to take the user experience one step further.

Some YouTube users have started seeing a ‘1080p Premium’ resolution in the video quality dropdown. As shared by Reddit user ‘u/KZedUK,’ the new resolution has “Enhanced bitrate” written right beneath it, with the regular 1080p resolution still available.

new CEO’s already making changes, ‘1080p Premium’ option appeared today
by u/KZedUK in LinusTechTips

“1080p Premium is an enhanced bitrate version of 1080p which provides more information per pixel that results in a higher quality viewing experience,” said a YouTube spokesperson in a statement to The Verge. “There are no changes to the existing quality offerings for 1080p (HD) resolution on YouTube.”

On Reddit, users raised concerns that YouTube is downgrading the current 1080p resolution to make the new one more appealing to users. “Yeah, I already had the idea in my head that 1080p looks crap the last few days. This is the old bait and switch, lets make 1080p crappier, and lets call the old 1080p premium,” wrote reddit user ‘itsgreen84,‘ while ‘floorshitter69‘ added “I could be wrong, but I felt like the last few days the colours have been crushed and not as vibrant on my phone watching videos even in 1080p.”

However, according to the above statement from YouTube, it has not made any changes to the current 1080p resolution.

It’s worth noting that the new resolution is currently just a test feature, which YouTube may or may not roll out widely. If the feature does expand, it will only be available to YouTube Premium subscribers. YouTube Premium comes with a one-month free trial and costs $11.99 per month thereafter.

Québecor CEO says company is ready to expand wireless services to Canadians

Québecor is ready to expand its mobile services outside of Quebec.

Company CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau expressed the sentiment during a conference call Thursday following the release of the company’s fourth quarter 2022 financial results.

“Our plans are drawn and we are ready to go, ready to create real, lasting competitive dynamics in Ontario and Western Canada,” Péladeau told analysts. “This project represents a springboard to a new era (of goals) for Quebecor.”

The company runs Fizz Mobile, a digital wireless provider, under subsidiary Vidéotron. The company is also hoping to acquire Freedom Mobile under a $2.85-billion deal with Shaw and Rogers. It’s unclear if Freedom and Fizz will merge in any way if the company is successful in its acquisition attempts.

Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne must provide Québecor, Rogers, and Shaw with approval before the move can be finalized. The side deal is cardinal to Rogers’ $26-billion takeover of Shaw.

Champagne previously stated his conditions for approval include Vidéotron keeping the wireless licenses it acquires for 10 years and dropping wireless bills for Ontario and Western Canada residents by 20 percent.

“As ISED reviews the transaction, we reiterate our determination to attack Canada’s telecommunications oligopoly and our commitment to creating a competitive landscape that will lower the relatively high prices Canadians are still paying, as we have been doing in Québec for more than 12 years,” Péladeau said in a press release detailing the financial results.

Québecor made $1.19 billion in revenue in Q4 2022, a 0.1 percent increase year-over-year.

Similarly, the second plan costs $65 per month and comes with 15GB of data. With the promotion, you get 15GB of additional data, equaling 30GB data for the month.

Indigo employees face data breach due to ransomware attack on website

As a result of a ransomware attack on the website of Indigo Books & Music Inc., current and former employees are facing a major data breach. It’s being reported by The Globe and Mail that personal data, including social insurance numbers, home addresses, banking information, and more, have been compromised.

On Thursday, Indigo president Andrea Limbardi sent a memo to staff regarding the data breach. “We recently learned that your personal information may have been acquired by an unauthorized third party between Jan. 16, 2023, and Feb. 8, 2023,” the memo states. As seen by The Globe and Mail, the memo continues to state, “We know this may be concerning news to receive and are deeply sorry for this breach of your information.”

Current and former employees of Canada’s largest bookstore now have to worry about possible identity theft and/or fraud. The data breach appears to have also compromised emails, phone numbers, full addresses, birth dates, and banking information. Further, direct deposit information and individual bank and branch numbers are at risk.

“You should consider contacting your local police and visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre for support,” Limbardi informs staff. “You should also review the RCMP’s Identity Theft and Identity Fraud Victim Assistance Guide for steps you can take.”

Earlier this month, Indigo suffered a fairly significant breach. The company clarified that the “cybersecurity incident” created a number of hiccups for those attempting to access bookstores and online purchases at the time. However, Indigo was quick to reveal that customer information wasn’t compromised. Additionally, the company’s Plum points reward system remains unaffected.

Within the memo, Indigo tells employees that it plans to support employees with “additional assurance and protection.” The company will be working with TransUnion. It’s said the agency with notify staff of any “critical changes” to their credit scores. Additionally, Indigo is setting staff up with a two-year subscription to TransUnion myTrueIdentity “at no cost.”
