Where to stream every Rocky movie in Canada before Creed III

Can you believe that Rocky is nearly 50 years old?

Since 1976, the iconic Sylvester Stallone series about an underdog boxer in Philadelphia has been going strong across eight movies. A ninth, Creed III, is set to release on March 3rd, although it will be the first without Stallone’s Rocky Balboa.

Naturally, a new movie in such a storied franchise might have you wanting to revisit the classics. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up where Canadians can stream the entire Rocky series — the six Stallone-led films and the two Michael B. Jordan-led entries.

  • Rocky (1976) — Amazon Prime Video via MGM (a $3.99/month channel add-on), Crave
  • Rocky II (1979) — Amazon Prime Video via MGM, Crave
  • Rocky III (1982) — Amazon Prime Video via MGM, Crave
  • Rocky IV (1985) — Amazon Prime Video via MGM, Crave
  • Rocky V (1990) — Amazon Prime Video via AMC+ (an $8.99/month channel add-on) or MGM, Crave
  • Rocky Balboa (2006) — Amazon Prime Video via AMC+, Crave
  • Creed (2015) — Amazon Prime Video
  • Creed II (2018) — Amazon Prime Video

An Amazon Prime subscription costs $99/year and includes Prime Video, while a Crave subscription is priced at $19.99/month.

It’s worth noting that Rocky IV, one of the series’ less popular entries, received a Director’s Cut from Stallone that made more well-received changes. This version of the movie, titled Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago, isn’t on any subscription video on demand (SVOD) services like Crave, but you can rent it on PVOD platforms like iTunes and Google Play.

Creed III, meanwhile, is notable for being the directorial debut of Michael B. Jordan, who also stars as Adonis Creed, son of Rocky’s late friend Apollo (Carl Weathers). Creed III also features the return of Tessa Thompson as Adonis’ partner, Bianca, and series newcomer Jonathan Majors as Adonis’ old friend with a score to settle, Damian Anderson.

Samsung elevates Bixby with new features like on-device voice processing

Samsung’s Bixby has always fallen short of industry-leading voice assistants like Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Google Assistant. Samsung is now looking to change that by introducing a major new update to Bixby that aims to make the assistant smarter and improve its performance.

With the new on-device mode, Bixby is able to recognize and process commands without an active internet connection. In addition, Bixby is set to gain support for a custom wake-up phrase, which means users can now select a personalized hot word of their choice to trigger the smart assistant.

Further, similar to Google Pixel’s call screening, Samsung is rolling out support for Bixby Text Call in English. Up until now, the feature, which lets you type what you want to say on a call, was limited to South Korean. With the release of One UI 5.1, the feature now works in English as well. It also allows you to customize Bixby’s voice for calls, alongside support for recording your own voice, which can then be applied to Bixby. It’s worth noting that the custom voice option is still limited to South Korean, while the regular Text Call option has expanded to English.

Furthermore, Bixby will now understand context and remember previous conversations, making it easier for users to interact with the voice assistant. For example, “Bixby users can first launch a workout on Samsung Health and then ask Bixby to play music that best suits that exercise by saying “Play music for this workout,” wrote Samsung.

Samsung says that the updates will be available for Samsung Galaxy users in February through a software update. The exact timing and availability of the updates may vary by user and market.

Ryan Reynolds partners with Terry Fox Foundation on special charity shirt

The Terry Fox Foundation has teamed up with Ryan Reynolds for its latest annual limited-edition shirt.

Designed by adidas in partnership with Reynolds and the Fox family, the shirt is adorned with messages from some of the people who have been inspired by Fox over the years. “Dear Terry” and “Chez Terry” are written in different fonts on the front, while the rear features actual letters and images sent to Fox and his family.

Ryan Reynolds Terry Fox shirt

While the shirt doesn’t officially launch until April 12th (the day Fox launched his iconic Marathon of Hope), the Terry Fox Foundation has opened up pre-orders now due to significant demand. In the first 24 hours alone, the organization received more than 5,373 shirt orders — one for each kilometre that Fox ran.

The shirt comes in three variants: $25 (short sleeve), $35 (long sleeve), and $40 (performance tee). A $20 children’s t-shirt is also available. You can order the shirts exclusively from shop.terryfox.org.

“Happy to be involved with the #DearTerry initiative for @TerryFoxCanada,” wrote Reynolds on social media. “I’ve been taking part in the Terry Fox Run since second grade and can’t think of a more enduring and lovely legacy for one person. Terry Fox inspired millions in life and death.”

In addition to the launch of the shirt, April 12th will also mark the first day that Canadians can register to join and fundraise for the 43rd annual Terry Fox Run in support of cancer research. The actual run will take place on September 17th, 2023.

Of course, there are other ways to support the charity beyond the shirt or taking part in the run. You can learn more about those here. To date, the organization has raised more than $850 million for cancer research.

Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort is part of an upcoming 1.2 million-square-foot studio in Markham

Canada’s own Ryan Reynolds, alongside his production and advertising company Maximum Effort, is set to establish a new 1.2 million-square-foot studio in Canada.

Maximum Effort, which Reynolds co-founded with George Dewey, is part of an ownership group for the studio, as reported by Variety. The facility will be part of an ownership group that is investing in a new private-equity fund, with a focus on real estate, sports, media, and venture capital. Markham, Ontario-based real-estate development firm Watford Group is reportedly leading the investment raise.

“Maximum Effort has grown in ways and directions that we’ve never imagined,” said Reynolds in a statement. “To be launching a fund and building a 1.2 million-square-foot studio facility in Ontario is both mind-boggling and humbling. Regardless, I’m excited to expand our storytelling capabilities in new directions and to bring more production work to Ontario.”

The studio, which is being built in Markham, Ontario, is described as a fully integrated production studio for film, scripted and unscripted reality television, drama series, live-action, and animated feature films. It will also include a technical incubator and a “virtual production campus” for vocational training. Construction of the studio is expected to begin soon, with no projected date for completion. The developers say the facility will be the largest film and TV production hub in Canada.

Apart from the new venture, Reynold’s Maximum Effort has production credits on the Deadpool movies, Free Guy, The Adam Project, Spirited, Shotgun Wedding, and the docu-series Welcome to Wrexham.

Spotify taps into OpenAI’s tech for more personalized music suggestions

Music streaming giant Spotify has just announced a new “AI DJ” feature for its mobile apps that takes music personalization “to a whole new level.”

According to the Stockholm, Sweden-based company, the new AI DJ feature will get to know you and your music tastes so well that it automatically chooses what to play for you.

“This feature, first rolling out in beta, will deliver a curated lineup of music alongside commentary around the tracks and artists we think you’ll like in a stunningly realistic voice,” wrote Spotify.

The feature will reportedly sort through new music and look back at some of your old favourites, finally deciphering what you might or might not enjoy listening to. It will “review what you might enjoy and deliver a stream of songs picked just for you. And what’s more, it constantly refreshes the lineup based on your feedback,” wrote Spotify. In case the music being played is not what you enjoy, you can easily switch to a different genre, artist or mood by hitting the DJ button at the bottom right of the screen.

Ultimately, the more you use the feature and deliver feedback, including which songs you liked and which ones you didn’t, the better recommendations the feature will be able to churn out in the future.

The AI DJ feature uses a combination of Spotify’s personalization technology, OpenAI’s generative AI technology and a dynamic AI voice platform from Sonantic to create a seamless and highly personalized listening experience. Spotify acquired Somantic in June 2022.

The feature is rolling out in Canada and the United States today for the Spotify iOS and Android app. To use the feature, follow the instructions below:

  1. Head to your Music Feed on Home in the Spotify mobile app on your iOS or Android device.
  2. Tap Play on the DJ card.
  3. Let Spotify do the rest! The DJ will serve a lineup of music alongside short commentary on the songs and artists, picked just for you.
  4. Not feeling the vibe? Just hit the DJ button at the bottom right of the screen to be taken to a different genre, artist, or mood.

Apple Watch glucose monitoring is reportedly a few years away from release

Since long before even the Apple Watch’s release, non-prick glucose monitoring has been rumoured to be coming to Apple’s wearable.

Lately, however, those reports have died down — at least until now. According to Bloomberg, no-prick blood glucose monitoring is in the “proof-of-concept stage” and could come to market once Apple can shrink the technology down to work in an Apple Watch.

Bloomberg says the tech utilizes a laser to gauge the glucose concentration under the skin. This technology is aimed at those with diabetes or those that are prediabetic, with an emphasis on preventing Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes.

The publication says that the project has been in development since 2010 following the purchase of blood glucose monitoring startup RareLight. The company behind the technology operated outside of Apple as Avolonte Health, but eventually was combined with the tech giant’s Exploratory Design Group, with direct oversight from CEO Tim Cook and hardware lead Eugene Kim, alongside other executives.

An actual Apple Watch capable of no-prick glucose monitoring is still likely years away from release, but this report says that it’s closer to now than it has been in the past.

Over the years, Apple has added several heath-focused sensors to the Apple Watch, bringing the ability to detect atrial fibrillation, low blood oxygen levels and ovulation cycles to the wearable.

Latest Meta Quest 2/Pro update brings precise hand controls to the headset

While the Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro virtual reality headsets already offer hand tracking that doesn’t require direct conroller input, it isn’t always very precise.

The latest update to the Quest’s operating system, v50, changes this by adding ‘Direct Touch,’ a feature that allows users to reach out and point to interact with a button. Previously, you needed to point at an object and then awkwardly pinch your fingers to select it, so this new form of interaction removes the additional, slightly awkward gesture from the equation to make things feel more natural.

Meta says Direct Touch works on virtual keyboards, allowing users to tap the headset’s floating keyboard directly without moving a cursor around with its controllers. Controls have always been an issue for VR headset manufacturers, and while physical controllers get the job done, their motion controls aren’t always very intuitive.

Though it’s still in the early stages, Meta seems to view gestures like Direct Touch as the future of interacting with its headsets’ virtual worlds.

The v50 update also adds app multi-tasking within games and apps to the Quest 2, a feature already offered by the Quest Pro. Meta says that the update is gradually rolling out “over the next few weeks.”

Meta is expected to reveal its rumoured Quest 3 virtual reality headset later this year

The Last of Us episode has Game of Thrones-esque editing error

An eagle-eyed viewer of The Last of Us has caught a minor but amusing error in the latest episode of the hit HBO series.

On Twitter, guitarist Scott T. Jones shared an image of a wide shot of the episode’s wintry Wyoming scenery. It looks beautiful, but there’s something wrong with it — a few crew members can be seen in the bottom left. Admittedly, they look so small in the frame that most people would have likely not noticed or simply thought they were part of the trees.

Still, it’s interesting to see accidents like this pop up in such a big HBO production, especially when it isn’t the first time. In episode four of Game of Thrones‘ eighth and final season, a Starbucks coffee cup was infamously visible in front of Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). This isn’t exclusive to HBO, either. In another Pedro Pascal series, Disney’s The Mandalorian, a crew member wearing a t-shirt and jeans was standing behind Greef Karga (Carl Weathers). In both cases, the issues were digitally removed, so it remains to be seen whether HBO will do the same with The Last of Us.

In any case, what’s most notable about the latest episode of The Last of Us, at least for Canadians, is where, exactly, this scene was filmed. Indeed, standing in for Episode 6’s Wyoming setting was none other than the lovely small town of Canmore, Alberta. It’s a location that both Pascal and Bella Ramsey said was their favourite in the province to visit during an interview with MobileSyrup“Every inch of Canmore was just this magical little town… with really great fudge,” said Pascal.

It’s worth noting that Season 2 of The Last of Us will adapt The Last of Us Part II, a game that begins in Wyoming. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether HBO will return to Canmore to shoot those scenes and, if so, whether the crew members will stay out of sight next time.

The Last of Us is now streaming exclusively on Crave in Canada.
