Samsung Galaxy S23’s display consumes less power

Samsung Display has revealed that the S23 series utilizes a new OLED panel to improve power efficiency. According to the company (via SamMobile) the screen uses a new organic material to improve luminance and decrease power consumption.

Samsung improved the movement speed of electrons in the organic layer, and now the display consumes 13 to 16 percent less power to achieve the same brightness level. Further, XDA’s display expert Dylan Raga says that the S23 series consumes 0.6W less power to achieve 1,150 nits brightness than the iPhone 14 Pro.

The handset also offers Eye Care certification and Vision Booster that improve colours under bright lighting conditions.

The S23 series’ OLED panel features 1,750 nits of peak brightness, which is the same as the S22 Ultra. However, this new panel should help with power consumption at this higher brightness.

In my time with the S23 Ultra so far, I’ve noticed that the phone’s battery lasts longer, as compared to its predecessor, and now we know its display is likely one of the key reasons.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro could feature new design with thinner bezels

If you’re starting to grow tired of the iPhone’s look (like me), you’ll likely be pleased to learn that iPhone 15 Pro design change rumours are circulating again.

According to Apple leaker ShrimpApplePro (yes, that really is their online username), the iPhone 15 Pro’s bezels “will be thinner.” ShrimpApplePro also reported a similar rumour a few weeks ago but said this new corroborating report comes from a different source.

ShrimpApplePro’s original report said that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will still be available with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively, and that the screen will be slightly curved, similar to the Apple Watch. You aren’t wrong if this sounds reminiscent of the screens featured in Samsung’s flagship S series line.

If you’re wondering why we’re reporting about rumours sourced from such a ridiculously named Twitter account with an anime profile photo, allow me to enlighten you. This is the same leaker that revealed the iPhone 14 Pro’s dynamic island ahead of Apple’s official reveal, and historically, they have a pretty solid track record for accuracy.

Other recent iPhone 15 Pro rumours include a faster A17 Bionic chip, the switch to USB-C, 8GB of RAM and new volume and power buttons that don’t move when you press them.

Like in years past, Apple will likely reveal its next flagship smartphone this coming fall.

CRTC lays groundwork for improved poll access

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has set new timelines to improve pole access.

Large telephone companies own the poles and provide access to competitors. Under the new timelines, the process will become easier allowing competitors to roll out their networks faster.

The measures announced in policy CRTC 2023-31 apply to Bell, TELUS, SaskTel, and Télébec.

“Poles are essential for the deployment of telecommunications networks,”  Vicky Eatrides the CRTC’s chairperson, said. “The measures introduced today will have tangible impacts for Canadians by helping competitors speed up their deployment of broadband networks, leading to more competition.”

Companies have until April 3rd to file revised tariffs with the CRTC.

Battery issue causes Ford to halt F-150 Lightning production

American automaker Ford has confirmed that it’s halting the production of its F-150 Lightning, the best-selling electric pickup truck in the United States, due to a possible battery problem.

In a statement given to CNN News, Ford spokesperson Emma Berg said that the company discovered the issue during pre-delivery vehicle inspections, and the production halt was ordered last week.

According to the report, the pause in production and delivery will not affect trucks already at dealerships or those already delivered to customers. Besides this, Ford did not provide any information about the nature of the battery-related problem, nor did it mention its severity of it. “The team is diligently working on the root cause analysis,” Berg said.

Production for the F-150 Lightning started in the spring of last year. Since then, the automotive company has sold 18,000 F-150 Lightning pickup trucks, making the vehicle the best-seller in its category. However, competition is on its way.

General Motors is expected to begin producing the Chevrolet Silverado EV later this year, which will be followed early next year by the GMC Sierra EV. Tesla’s Cybertruck is also expected to begin full production in 2024, and Stellantis will reportedly begin production of the Ram 1500 Rev next year.

While the current halt in production is due to a battery issue, Ford has made significant investments in battery production, including a recent $3.5 billion USD (about $4.6 billion CAD) in a new battery plant in Michigan that’s set to begin production in 2026. Additionally, the automaker is constructing production facilities in Kentucky and Tennessee to manufacture electric vehicle batteries and trucks.

Telus website adds banner to plans warning they end on February 20

Vancouver-based national telecom Telus has added notices to its website that several of its current plans end on February 20th.

MobileSyrup spotted the change on February 15th when a purple banner that reads “Ends February 20th” appeared on all four of Telus’ in-market plans.

Telus did not respond to requests for comment in time for publication.

Telus plans as of February 15, 2023.

It’s not clear what, exactly, the banners mean or what customers can expect come February 20th. The likely scenario is that Telus will deploy new or updated plans, perhaps with new pricing. It’s also possible the change was a mistake on Telus’ part. The current plans are listed below:

  • $85/mo Unlimited 25 5G – 25GB of data at up to 250Mbps speed, unlimited nationwide talk and text
  • $95/mo Unlimited 50 5G+ – 50GB of data at up to 1Gbps speed, unlimited nationwide talk and international text
  • $105/mo Unlimited CAN-US 60 5G+ – 60GB of data at up to 1Gbps speed, unlimited talk, international text, unlimited talk, text and data in the U.S.
  • $125/mo Unlimited CAN-US 100 5G+ – 100GB of data at up to 1Gbps speed, unlimited talk, international text, unlimited talk, text and data in the U.S.

It’s worth noting that Telus currently offers “unlimited” data, which means customers can keep using data beyond the plan’s allotment, but at a slower, throttled speed of up to 512Kbps.

You can check out the Telus website here. Stay tuned to MobileSyrup for the latest on whatever changes come on February 20th.

Uber’s audio recording safety feature now available in Canada

Uber riders and drivers in Canada can now access a safety feature that allows trips to be audio recorded.

Users can set up the feature in the app’s Safety Toolkit and start a a recording by hitting the blue shield icon on the map screen and tapping ‘start.’ Users can control when they want to start or stop a recording. If riders and drivers don’t end a recording on their own, Uber says the recording will stop after the trip is complete.

Audio files are encrupted and stored on the device of the person making the recording. Uber’s team can only access the file if users report safety incidents, allowing them to attach the audio file in the report.

“We’re always looking for ways to leverage our innovative technology to build features that help make Uber safer,” Michael van Hemmen, general manager of Uber Canada Mobility, said. “We hope this audio recording feature will help give riders and drivers peace of mind by encouraging comfortable and positive interactions while on trips.”

Uber originally launched the feature in 2019, but it didn’t make its way to Canada until 2022. The company tested the feature in Calgary in November.

Freedom Mobile drops $15/mo 500MB plan

Shaw-owned Freedom Mobile appears to have removed one of its lower-cost ‘Freedom’ Starter plans.

An update to Freedom Mobile’s website spotted by MobileSyrup saw the removal of the provider’s $15/mo 500MB plan. The plan included 250MB of LTE data on the Freedom network along with a bonus 250MB for 500MB total monthly data.

Additionally, the plan included unlimited Canada-wide calling and incoming calls, unlimited global text, picture and video messaging, and Voicemail+.

Freedom’s $15/mo plan is no longer listed on its website.

When customers leave the Freedom network and use ‘Freedom Nationwide’ on a partner network, the plan includes 100 minutes of calls to Canada, unlimited incoming calls, and unlimited texting.

The removal of the plan leaves customers with fewer low-cost options. Freedom’s plans now start at $25/mo for a ‘Freedom’ plan and $40/mo for a ‘Big Gig Unlimited’ plan. On the prepaid side, Freedom’s cheapest plan is $19/mo.

BMO eliminates debit transaction fees for transit rides in Canada

On February 15th, BMO announced that it would no longer charge customers debit transaction fees at any transit authority terminals across Canada, for both commercial and retail customers, as reported by iPhone in Canada.

BMO has now eliminated transaction count limits on any transit authority terminals throughout the country. It’s worth noting that if customers exceed their free transaction limits (set by the bank), fees would still apply, but not for transit payments.

This modification comes as many transit payment systems across the country shift towards tap debit and credit card payments on buses and subways. “BMO is the first financial institution to offer both retail and commercial debit card holders unlimited transit authority transactions and help simplify their public transit experience,” said Gayle Ramsay, head of Everyday Banking, Segments & Customer Growth at BMO.

“In this economic environment, we are seeing that significantly fewer Canadians feel they are making real financial progress with particularly steep declines in city centres such as Toronto and Vancouver. This feature will help ease worries about transaction count limit fees and let customers focus on their financial goals and staying on budget.”

“We welcome BMO’s decision to make transit use easier and more convenient by making all debit transactions free of charge” said William Keliehor, chief commercial officer at Interac. “Millions of Canadians use Interac Debit for day-to-day purchases direct from their bank account and we are committed to expanding convenient debit payments at transit authorities across the country.”

Last month, Vancouver’s TransLink launched Interac debit tap payments for every bus and fare gate, system-wide. The latest BMO announcement could encourage other financial institutions to follow the same path, making the public transit experience easier and more convenient for Canadians.
