Netflix password sharing fee to begin rolling out in early 2023: report

Netflix will finally introduce a paywall on password sharing in early 2023, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The publication cites multiple sources who say the streaming giant will roll out the change first in the U.S. before, presumably, expanding to other markets.

Earlier this year, Netflix confirmed that it would begin making customers pay to share their accounts with others, claiming that as many as 100 million people had been doing so for free. While Netflix’s terms of service have long stipulated that users don’t share their passwords with others, the company hasn’t actually ever enforced that.

Interestingly, though, WSJ reports that Netflix researchers warned the streamer that password sharing was eating into subscriptions way back in 2019, but it didn’t want to alienate customers by cracking down on this. The service’s initially significant growth amid the COVID-19 pandemic also put off any potential plans to introduce a paywall.

But earlier this year, Netflix reported its first quarterly subscriber losses, all while rival services like Disney+ continued to grow in popularity. As a result, the company has finally decided to push forward with a paywall. The first step in these efforts was a test in a three countries — Peru, Chile and Costa Rica — in which it would cost around $3 to $4 Canadian to share your account with two people.

In October, a Netflix spokesperson told MobileSyrup that the company currently had no plans to bring the test to Canada. That said, the WSJ‘s new report about Netflix’s initial U.S. rollout plan seems to suggest an international expansion wouldn’t be too far off.

For now, though, the company has a new, less expensive ad-enabled tier in Canada, the U.S. and other markets. At a cost of $5.99 CAD/month, Netflix ‘Basic with Ads’ offers most of the Netflix film and TV series catalogue with ads playing roughly four to five minutes every hour. That said, Gizmodo reports that only nine percent of new U.S. Netflix subscribers actually opted for the entry-level membership last month.

Cell services in November cost Canadians more for the first time since 2019

Canadians paid more for cellular services on a yearly basis for the first time in three years.

According to the November 2022 Consumer Price Index from Statistics Canada, prices increased by two percent compared to November 2021.

At that time, Canadians witnessed promotions across the industry for discounted phone plans and bonus data. Comparing the two years, fewer promotions were offered in November 2022.

The federal government achieved its target to reduce cellular prices by 25 percent earlier this year. However, Canadians are still paying some of the highest wireless bills in the world.

According to the 2021 annual telecom service price tracking study, the only country that paid more than Canadians for some wireless services was Japan.

With the pending Rogers-Shaw merger, concerns exist that costs will only continue to grow. It forms part of the Competition Bureau’s efforts to block the merger. Representatives from Rogers and Shaw have denied that to be the case.

Telus offering $100/year unlimited talk plan for Boxing Week

Vancouver-based national telecom Telus has another Boxing Week offer that slipped under the radar: $100/year for talk and text.

Spotted by RedFlagDeals user ‘Giorgiodethrifty‘, this Telus plan might work for you if you’re looking for a basic, low-cost calling plan, though it does come with some major caveats. First, the plan typically gives customers 400 anytime local minutes for the year, which isn’t a lot. However, the Boxing Week offer bumps that up to unlimited nationwide minutes for one year. As far as I’m concerned, that makes this Telus plan a much better option.

Unfortunately, texting is still limited to 400 incoming and outgoing SMS and MMS messages, which also is not a lot. Still, if you’re all about calling, the texting limits may not matter much to you.

You can find the deal here.

Google Meet now features live French to English translations

Google added live translation support for Google Meet back in September 2021. Since then, the feature has helped users overcome language barriers in meetings, with English speech being seamlessly translated to French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

Up until now, the feature was limited to translating and live captioning English speech to various languages. Now, Google has added support for additional languages, alongside support for translating speech from other languages to English live captions.

English speech can now be translated and live captioned to three new languages, namely Japanese, Mandarin (simplified), and Swedish, whereas speech in French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish can be translated and live captioned into English.

Its worth noting that support for the newly added languages is still in Beta, so there might be a few hiccups here and there, but the feature should work as intended for the most part.

The functionality is currently rolling out for Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and should be available to users over the next few days. Read more about the update here.

Your Ubisoft titles on Stadia can easily be migrated to PC

Back in October, CDProjektRed detailed how users can rescue and export their Cyberpunk 2077 game progress from Google’s dying Stadia game streaming platform.

Now, Ubisoft is allowing Stadia users that purchased any of its games to migrate over to Ubisoft Connect, allowing you to retain your Ubisoft games and game progress directly on PC, all at no extra cost. Further, Ubisoft’s approach is much simpler than CDProjektRed’s. In the case of CyberPunk 2077, users have to manually export and import their game data using Google Takeout, however, with Ubisoft, any of the publisher’s titles that you purchased on Stadia will be automatically be added to your Ubisoft account through Ubisoft Connect as long as you have your Stadia and Ubisoft accounts linked.

If you’ve played a Ubisoft game on Stadia, the accounts should already be linked, but if they’re not already, you can connect them in your Ubisoft account’s settings.

Once linked, any Ubisoft title on your Stadia account should automatically migrate over.

It’s worth noting that Stadia has confirmed that purchases on all hardware and software products are eligible for refunds. So technically, you’ll get a refund for Ubisoft games, while also being able to migrate them over and continue playing them free of cost. It’s also worth noting that any in-game virtual currency that you have isn’t transferable, so make sure to spend it before January 18th, the day Stadia ceases to exist.

Further, as a measure of goodwill, “all Ubisoft customers on Stadia, whether owners or subscribers, will also receive a coupon code for one free month of GeForce NOW Priority Membership, which will allow you to keep streaming Ubisoft games across a wide variety of devices,” reads Ubisoft’s blog post.

Xbox Series X 8-can replica fridge down to $48.88 at Walmart

If you’re like me and have been waiting for a discount to buy Microsoft’s Xbox Series X replica fridge, the time has arrived (sort of).

The full-sized, 12-can version of the undeniably cool-looking but not very well-reviewed fridge cost $149.99 back when pre-orders first went live last December, but now, the cost is down to $88.88 ($61.11 off).

On the other hand, the 8-can version of the Series X replica fridge is down to just $48.88, making it a much easier joke/impulse buy (even I might pick one up). This smaller version of the fridge cost $99.99 when it was first released ($51.11 off)

It’s worth noting that this doesn’t seem to be a limited-time discount, with both fridges’ regular prices being slashed in time for the holiday shopping season.

Even with the Series X replica fridges’ issues (they’re apparently very loud), they could be the perfect last-minute gift for that gamer in your life.
