Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series rumoured to launch on February 1st

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series is expected to be the hottest Android device to launch in the first quarter of 2023. Now two well-known, often-reliable leakers claim the South Korean tech giant’s phones will launch on February 1st.

Both Ice Universe and Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) agree on this date.

The Galaxy s23 is rumoured to sport a QHD+ 3088 x 1440-pixel resolution, 8GB/12GB of RAM, 256GB/512GB/1TB of storage, four rear cameras with a 200-megapixel primary, a 12-megapixel ultrawide, a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto and a 10-megapixel telephoto with 10x optical zoom.

Further, Samsung’s flagship will feature Bluetooth, USB-xC, a gyrosensor, a proximity sensor, a light sensor, an under-display fingerprint reader, face recognition and a 4,855mAh battery that will be marketed as a 5,000mAh battery.

Apple will reportedly cancel or delay 2024 iPhone SE refresh

Apple’s rumoured 2024 iPhone SE refresh could be cancelled or delayed, according to a series of tweets from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo says that his sources indicate Apple will delay or scrap the 2024 iPhone SE due to lower-than-expected shipments of the iPhone SE (2022) that released earlier this year, the iPhone 13 mini and even the iPhone 14 Plus.

The analyst goes on to say that the design Apple has planned for the 4th-gen iPhone SE would require the tech giant to sell it at a higher cost and that it will “reconsider the product positioning and return on investment.” Kuo says rethinking its strategy surrounding a potential iPhone SE refresh will allow Apple to navigate the “challenges of the global economic recession in 2023.”

Past rumours have suggested that Apple’s next iPhone SE will look a lot like an iPhone XR and that the device will ditch the physical Touch ID button on the front in favour of Face ID or a side-oriented Touch ID sensor built into the power button, such as what’s available on some iPads.

Screen size is rumoured to come in at 6.1-inches, but it’s unclear if the device will feature an LCD or OLED display. The new iPhone SE will also reportedly still feature a display notch.

It’s unclear what Apple’s plans are for a refreshed iPhone SE or if the device has been cancelled altogether. Given the device likely won’t release until sometime in 2024, it’s important to point out that the tech giant’s strategy could shift significantly in the coming months.

Musk to resign once he finds someone ‘foolish enough’ to be Twitter CEO

Surprising absolutely no one, Elon Musk said he would still be in charge of parts of Twitter after finding someone “foolish enough” to take the job.

Over the weekend, Musk ran a Twitter poll asking if he should step down as head of Twitter after he oversaw a series of suspensions targeting journalists and rival social media platforms. He lost, with nearly 58 percent of the 17.5 million votes favouring Musk stepping down. Further, in an absolute sore loser move, Musk said he’d change the rules on Twitter to restrict voting in polls so only Twitter Blue subscribers can do so.

Following the poll, there was some debate over whether Musk would actually step down from the CEO role. I had doubts, but reports suggested Musk had started the hunt for a new Twitter CEO long before posting the poll. Well, looks like I was at least partially right.

Musk tweeted a response to the poll on December 20th, writing that he will resign “as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job.” Musk went on to say he would “just run the software & servers teams” after handing over the CEO role.

As The Verge points out, software and servers are the vast majority of Twitter at this point, especially after Musk laid off huge swaths of the company. However you slice it, it seems clear Musk has no intention of giving up control regardless if he holds the official CEO title.

You can follow along with Musk’s chaotic reign over Twitter here.

1TB iPhone 13 Pro available for $39/mo at Fido, Koodo

If you’re in the market for an iPhone 13 Pro with lots of storage, now might be the time to buy. According to deals spotting by RedFlagDeals (RFD) user ‘waterwaterwater,’ the 1TB iPhone 13 Pro is available at Koodo and Fido for $39/mo over two years.

Fido’s offer uses the provider’s device financing, which means customers pay $0 down and $39/mo for 24 months ($936 total before tax). Typically, Fido charges $83.12/mo financing for the 1TB iPhone 13 Pro, so this isn’t a bad deal.

Similarly, Koodo has the 1TB iPhone 13 Pro on a $39/mo Tab instead of through financing. However, the pricing works out the same at $936 over 24 months. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, Koodo was out of stock on the 1TB 13 Pro, but it had the 512GB at the same $39/mo price.

Also at the time of writing, Virgin Plus did not have the iPhone 13 Pro.  It’s worth noting that Apple no longer sells the iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max, so any available stock is leftover from before the iPhone 14 Pro launch.

Plus, with Koodo and Fido both offering $50/40GB plans for Boxing Week, the deal is a little sweeter. The main downside is that the $50 plan only lasts 15 months, so for the remainder of the contract, you’ll need to pay $65/mo instead. However, some RFD users reported success in keeping the $45/50GB Black Friday plan and getting the iPhone 13 Pro — the Black Friday plan lasts 24 months before the price goes up.

Anyway, if you want to grab an iPhone 13 Pro with tons of storage for a lower price than normal, you may want to move quick before stock runs out. You can grab the 512GB from Koodo here, or the 1TB from Fido here.

Electric vehicles to make up 100 percent of sales by 2035: government

One-fifth of all new vehicles sold in Canada in 2026 will be zero-emission vehicles, according to prosed regulations introduced Wednesday.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault says the regulations will apply to companies manufacturing and importing cars, vans and SUVs.

The draft regulations state the sale of new zero-emission vehicles will increase to 60 percent by 2030 and hit 100 percent by 2035.

“These targets will help increase the supply so that more Canadians who want to own a zero-emission vehicle can buy one,” a press release from Environment and Climate Change Canada states.

According to reporting from the Canadian Press, sellers who don’t meet sale targets could be subjected to penalties under Canada’s Environmental Protection Act.

The federal government has made previous investments in the zero-emission vehicle market, including funding thousands of new charging stations across the country. By 2027, the federal government will fund 85,000 charging stations.

Ukraine to receive thousands of Starlink terminals as funding concerns temporarily subside

Ukraine is set to receive more than 10,000 Starlink terminals.

The country’s deputy prime minister Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed the news to Bloomberg. Several countries, part of the European Union, are ready to help pay for the service, he said.

The announcement momentarily puts an end to questions on how Ukraine could fund the satellite internet service. Starlink’s satellite internet terminals served as a vital source of communication when they first arrived in the country following Russia’s Invasion that destroyed Ukraine’s communications infrastructure.

But its presence was questioned this fall when SpaceX said it might stop funding the service. The company asked the U.S. to provide financial resources for the service.

“As of now all financial issues have been resolved,” Fedorov told Bloomberg. While he didn’t go into detail, Fedorov said it will need financial assistance by spring 2023.

Ukraine has received roughly 22,000 Starlink antennas since February.

“Regarding internet, we have a lot of Starlinks, but the key point is we have got a nod for another shipment that will be used to stabilize connection for critical situations,” Fedorov said.

Spotify might rebrand Anchor under its main podcast service

Spotify is asking some creators under its Spotify for Podcasters program what they think about a rebrand.

According to TechCrunch, Spotify is considering combining Anchor and Spotify for Podcasters under one platform called Spotify Creator Studio.

Spotify acquired Anchor, a free broadcasting service, alongside Gimlet Media in 2019.

The possible rebrand would see Spotify for Podcasters rebranded to “Spotify Creator Studio — Unhosted”  and Anchor to “Spotify Creator Studio — Hosted.”

The unhosted version will allow podcasters who host their shows on other platforms to access analytics and polls. Hosted will allow podcasts hosted through the Spotify Creator Studio to access free hosting, the mobile app, monetization, and features in the unhosted category.

Both categories would be free to access, TechCrunch reports.

“At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of surveys and tests in an effort to improve our user experience,” a Spotify representative told the publication.

“Some of these end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We have no news to share on future plans at this time.”
