Pokémon is finally retiring Ash and Pikachu after 25 years

After 25 years, Pokémon is finally leaving its main protagonist, Ash Ketchum, behind. The trainer became the best in the world after defeating the Galarian champion Leon in the Masters’ Eight tournaments.

This ends Ash’s journey as he’s accomplished what he set out to do back in the first episode of the Pokémon TV show in 1997. Ash’s journey will end with 11 episodes next year as the finale of the Pokémon Journeys: Series. The episodes will start rolling out on January 13th in Japan, and reportedly feature several of Ash’s friends from over the years, including Brock and Misty.

Moving forward, the Pokémon anime will star two new protagonists, named Liko and Roy, in the Japanese version of the TV show. Further, the two new characters will be accompanied by Pokémon Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly.

As someone who’s old enough to remember the original episodes from back in 1997, I’m happy that they’re finally retiring this character. Ash and his Pikachu haven’t aged in 25 years, so hopefully, this means that the never-aging fictional 10-year-old can finally grow up.

If you live in Canada and are feeling nostalgic, you can head to Netflix and watch Pokémon Indigo League right now.

HTC to announce light AR/VR headset at CES 2023

HTC will introduce a new flagship augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) headset on January 5th at CES.

The company doesn’t plan to release many details ahead of the headset’s reveal, but in a recent interview with The Verge, HTC’s global head of product, Shen Ye, stated the device is a small, light, all-in-one headset that offers both virtual and augmented reality.

“It’s about taking all of these advances that we made in not only the design aspects, but also the technology aspects, and building it into something that’s meaningful and that’s appealing for consumers,” Ye told The Verge.

Based on images shared with The Verge, the device sports a goggle-like look with front and side-facing cameras. The headset is capable of entertainment, exercise, gaming and “more powerful use cases” like productivity and enterprise tools, Ye told The Verge. You can also expect two hours of battery life and controllers that support six degrees of freedom and hand tracking.

One of the headset’s key features is its outward-facing cameras that can pass video to users’ screens, allowing for mixed reality. HTC doesn’t seem to have a plan for what this feature could be used for, however. When The Verge asked about possible use cases, Ye highlighted HTC’s relationships with developers and said, “we’re at this phase where the tech is solid and we’ll start seeing some really cool experiences.”

HTC previously teased this new standalone VR/AR headset back in October.

HTC’s headset will also feature a depth sensor and could offer better dynamic range than other colour-passthrough-capable mixed reality devices. According to HTC, even with the headset on, you’ll still be able to read text on a laptop or phone screen, which is difficult on the Meta Quest Pro.

Ye told The Verge the headset would be one of the lightest on the market before emphasizing that HTC spent a lot of time ensuring the device was ergonomic.

HTC plans to reveal this headset on January 5th, but an actual release date (and, even more importantly, a Canadian release date) is still unknown.

Linux partners with several companies to develop open-source map data

It’s well-known that Google and Apple dominate the mobile map navigation market (but mainly Google).

If you have Google Maps on your phone, most people don’t really need another navigation application. It offers accurate information, an easy-to-use AI, several layers and features like 3D maps and street view.

Even navigation services like Waze (which is owned by Google) use Google Maps data to power their own apps and vice versa.

Linux realizes that Google’s domination in the map market is a problem, and it’s teaming up with several companies to develop open-source map data that can be used by mapping applications worldwide.

Linux’s effort is collaborative and involves Amazon (AWS), Meta, Microsoft and Tomtom. It aims to help developers and companies work on mapping systems without relying on data from Google.

“Mapping the physical environment and every community in the world, even as they grow and change, is a massively complex challenge that no one organization can manage. Industry needs to come together to do this for the benefit of all,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director for the Linux Foundation in a press release. “We are excited to facilitate this open collaboration among leading technology companies to develop high quality, open map data that will enable untold innovations for the benefit of people, companies, and communities.”

Initially, the new service will offer basic layers like roads and buildings, with the goal of evolving over time. “To support next-generation map products, Overture will steadily improve the coverage, resolution and accuracy of existing data, as well as introduce new layers such as places, routing or 3D building data,” reads the press release.

Overture expects to release its first datasets in the first half of 2023. Learn more about the effort here.

Elon Musk shows off free speech commitment by banning journalists

Under self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist” and CEO Elon Musk, Twitter has banned the accounts of several people, including journalists that were critical of Musk, completely shut down the popular Spaces feature after Musk was confronted by journalists in a Space, and also suspended the account of rival social media network Mastodon. Moreover, Twitter now marks links to Mastodon as “potentially harmful.”

These very obviously pro-free speech moves come after Twitter suspended the ‘@ElonJet’ account run by ‘@jxckSweeney,’ whose account was also suspended. As a quick refresher, Musk has had an issue with Sweeney and the ElonJet account for a while since the account shared publicly available information about which airports Musk’s private jet flew to. Since then, Twitter has banned other accounts that track flight locations, including some that track other billionaires like Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates. Sweeney operated many of the accounts.

On December 14th, Musk claimed a stalker used information from the ElonJet account to follow a car carrying Musk’s son, X Æ A-Xii, thinking Musk was in the car, although the LA Times reported that no crime reports about the incident had been filed with the LAPD.

Shortly after, Twitter hastily introduced a new policy banning people from sharing other people’s private information, such as “real-time and/or same-day” location information (sometimes called ‘doxxing’). The policy also covers links to third-party URL(s), which is likely at least part of the reason why Twitter is blocking links to Mastodon — Twitter suspended Mastodon’s Twitter account after it shared a link to ElonJet’s Mastodon account. Moreover, several of the journalists who received suspensions shared links to ElonJet on other platforms like Mastodon.

Banned journalists join a Twitter Space, Musk kills Spaces

The Verge reports that several of the banned journalists were able to join a Twitter Space on December 15th where they discussed what was going on. Musk also joined the Space and answered some questions. During the conversation, Musk accused journalists who posted links to ElonJet on other platforms were evading the ban, which is why they also got banned.

The Washington Post’s Drew Harwell asked Musk how his decision to ban ElonJet and accounts sharing links to ElonJet differed from Twitter’s treatment of the Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020, something Musk previously called “incredibly inappropriate.” As a reminder, Twitter blocked links to the New York Post’s story about the alleged Hunter Biden laptop — that event became a cornerstone of Musk’s first ‘Twitter Files’ release, which included internal Twitter documents about the moderation decision.

Musk responded to Harwell by saying, “You dox, you get suspended. End of story, that’s it.” He then left the Twitter Space. Since then, Twitter shut down the Spaces feature — Muks claimed in a tweet that Spaces was shut down to fix a “legacy bug” and that the feature should return on December 17th. Presumably that legacy bug was the ability for banned accounts to join a Space.

Of course, I’d be remiss not to point out that Musk’s new anti-doxxing stance apparently doesn’t appear to apply to him or his allies. For example, the first Twitter Files release doxed Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s email address, while Musk himself posted a video of the alleged stalker, which included the person’s licence plate, and asked if anybody recognized the person. And if you need more proof that Musk is a hypocrite, here’s his tweet from November 6th, 2022, saying he was so committed to free speech he wouldn’t ban the account following his plane (plus a screenshot below in case Musk decides to delete the tweet, as he tends to do).

Per The Verge, Musk ran a poll asking if he should unsuspend accounts that “doxxed my exact location in real-time,” but the ‘now’ option won was winning with about 43 percent support. Musk then tweeted there were “too many options” and restarted the poll with the options ‘Now’ and ‘In 7 days.’ At the time of writing, ‘Now’ was winning with 58.6 percent of the vote. Musk certainly likes to base moderation decisions on polls, such as when he broke his promise and reinstated former U.S. president Donald Trump’s Twitter account.

EU sanctions

Finally, the EU is planning to sanction Twitter over the arbitrary bans, with the EU Commission’s vice president of values and transparency, Vera Journova, tweeting that the suspension of journalists “is worrying.”

According to Mashable, tweets from some suspended journalists didn’t violate Twitter’s policy, including the publication’s own Matt Binder. Binder said his account was suspended after sharing a screenshot of a tweet from CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan about the LAPD’s statement regarding Musk’s stalker claims.

So, to sum things up: Twitter banned the ElonJet account after Musk said he wouldn’t ban it, banned journalists who tweeted about ElonJet getting banned, and banned rival social media platform Mastodon that was hosting the ElonJet account, as well as put warning labels on links to Mastodon, and now the EU Commission is looking into what’s going on and might sanction Twitter over the suspensions.

You can keep up with all things Musk and Twitter here.

Samsung to reportedly focus on competing with Apple in 2023

Samsung is trying to compete better against Apple, according to reports from South Korean news outlet Hankyung (via SamMobile).

The South Korean company’s vice chairman Han Jong-hee reportedly told the company to come up with ways to better compete without reducing costs. “Think about ways to strengthen the competitiveness of smartphones without getting caught up in cost reduction,” said Jong-hee.

The chairman also explained that “cost reduction is something that even latecomers like Chinese companies can do without difficulty.” Instead, Samsung departments should focus on being more competitive rather than spend time and resources on developing cost-reduction strategies, instructed Jong-Hee.

Samsung has been working on A series smartphones for the better half of the past decade in an effort to better compete against Chinese manufacturers. However, in 2023 Samsung will focus on the flagship market and place less emphasis on its China-based rivals, which it hopes will allow it to better against Apple, says Hankyung .

As part of this strategy shift, Samsung is expected to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset for the entire Galaxy S23 series, instead of splitting between the Snapdragon and Exyos processors based on region. Further, this shift to using only Qualcomm’s chip will allow the company to focus on making its own in-house chipset for flagship smartphones in 2025, according to the report.

With this focus on competition, the Galaxy S23, Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 should be Samsung’s best smartphones in years. However, we already know that the S23 and S23+ will be very similar to the S22 series, so maybe Samsung will implement this strategy for its Galaxy S24 series instead.

2023 Honda Accord to support Android Automotive

The top-of-the-line Honda Accord Touring trim will support Android apps, Google Maps, and Assistant right from the dashboard in 2023.

The most interesting thing about this announcement is that Honda and Google seem to have taken to calling Android Automotive “Google Built-in,” which makes more sense and gives the appearance that the automakers are still in control of the general look and feel of their in-car software.

This update will allow Honda Accords to get over-the-air updates and download supported Android apps. In the past, I’ve found that infotainment systems built on Android are smooth, and ultra-convenient, so it’s exciting to see Honda jump into the fray. You can see some demos of some of the more exciting features in the video below.

However, the fact that this is only launching on one trim level of one car is highly disappointing. Honda has been lagging in the infotainment space and has offered fractured designs across its fleet for years, so ideally, the inclusion of Google built-in will start to align this, but from the launch, it’s not looking good.

Other companies such as GM, Volvo, Polestar and others have also signed on to build infotainment onto Google’s popular OS to get access to apps and Google Maps.
