Valve’s The Game Awards Steam Deck giveaway has been extended

During Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards event, which took place on Thursday, December 8th, Steam was offering users free Steam Decks for just watching the event online.

During the event, Valve was giving away one Steam Deck a minute to a random user. The Steam Decks being given away were the 512GB ones, which normally cost $819 and sport a premium anti-glare etched glass.

Users needed to be in ‘good standing’ and be situated in Canada, the U.S., the UK or EU to be able to participate in the giveaway.

Now, according to the official SteamDeck page, Valve was reportedly “blown away” by the response it received to the event, and it has decided to extend the giveaway.

This time, however, you don’t need to do anything. “We just drew 171 more names from all the registrants who tuned in (over 980,000 of you!),” reads the Tweet.   “Check your email to see if you won!”

For reference, if you’ve been selected for the second round of giveaways, the email you receive should look a little something like:

Canadians can now contribute to Community Notes on Twitter

Community Notes, a Twitter feature that allows selected users to add notes to misleading tweets, is now accepting Canadian contributors.

The fact-checking system is community focused. “Community Notes doesn’t work by majority rules,” the Community Notes Guide states. Helpful notes require contributors to agree on posts that may have disagreed in the past. “This helps prevent one-sided ratings.”

The feature was previously known as Birdwatch and got the new name after Elon Musk acquired the platform. Previously only available in the U.S., all Twitter users worldwide can now see Community Notes.

“We admit new contributors in batches, growing the contributor base by 10 percent per week. We’ll be monitoring quality, and may adjust that up and down based on what we learn,” the Community Notes Twitter account tweeted.

Interested Canadians can sign up here. To successfully join, users can’t have any recent notices of violating Twitter’s rules, joined the platform at least six months ago, and have a verified phone number.

Here’s how to stream Black Adam in Canada

Black Adam is now available on Crave.

The superhero movie, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Noah Centineo, Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge and more, is now streaming on the Bell-owned Crave.

You can also purchase the movie from iTunes, Google Play, the Cineplex Store, YouTube, Amazon and more for $29.99. Renting the film for $24.99 is also available from the above platforms.

Black Adam is a DC antihero character like Deadpool who’s often viewed as a villain and doesn’t care about things getting messy. He often fights against the magical hero Shazam as their powers come from a similar source, though from an Egyptian origin compared to his nemesis’ Greek magic.

The Warner Bros.’ film initially hit theatres in Canada on October 21st, so it makes sense it’s making its way to streaming services now, given that movies like Wonder Woman 1984 landed on Crave within eight weeks of their release.

Crave subscriptions start at $9.99/month for a Mobile plan, which includes access to HBO content. A $19.99/month Crave Total subscription is required to stream this content on supported Crave devices like Android, iOS, Apple TV and PlayStation.

Let’s talk about the The Game Awards 2022 [SyrupArcade Cast 2]

The 2022 Game Awards were only last week, so we at MobileSyrup thought it was only fitting to talk about the ceremony.

Brad Shankar was at the event, contributor Chris Brown watched remotely as a casual viewer, and Dean Daley also took in the event from home.

In episode two of the SyrupArcade Cast, we talk about everything The Game Awards-related, including some of the weird nominations, the games we didn’t want to win and the coolest trailers we saw at the event. And yes, that means I just gushed on about Cameron Monaghan and how good he looks in his role as Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

You can find our first episode of the SyrupArcade Cast focused on God of War Ragnarök here.

As always, you can listen to the SyrupCast below or find the podcast on your favourite streaming platform.

Apple’s Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite features save two people who fell in canyon

Two people travelling in a vehicle that fell into a remote California canyon were saved with the help of Apple’s Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite features.

According to tweets by Montrose Search & Rescue Team, deputies and fire were notified of the December 13th crash through a call from the Apple emergency satellite service.

The vehicle had dropped 300 feet. While the occupants extricated themselves, they had no cell service to call for help. But through Emergency SOS via Satellite, the occupants could text a relay center, which then notified authorities.

This isn’t the first time the features have made headlines for helping people.

Earlier this month, a stranded snowmobiler in Alaska used Emergency SOS via Satellite to call for help. The feature is available on iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models and connects devices out of reach of cellular networks with satellites.

However, recent reports have indicated Crash Detection can lead to accidental calls when skiing or riding rollercoasters. Despite the reports, the importance of either feature is hard to argue about.

Tesla launches ‘Tesla Electric’ electricity retailer

Tesla has launched ‘Tesla Electric,’ an electricity retailer that will service Powerwall owners.

Available initially in some Texas markets, Tesla Electric will let your Powerwall automatically decide when to charge and when to sell electricity to the grid. Tesla says it will also help users meet their sustainability goals  when importing electricity from the grid as it features energy from 100 percent renewable sources.

On Twitter, Alex Guichet, head of Tesla’s mobile app product, talked a bit more about Tesla Electric. “It’s a pretty competitive rate offer. It has a peak pricing structure, but Powerwall and Tesla Electric Mode are your buffers to avoid peak prices,” he wrote in a thread.

For now, Tesla Electric is only available by invitation to select customers in Texas, with availability in additional states on the way. It’s unclear if and when it might expand to other markets, such as Canada.

More information on Tesla Electric can be found here.

Ryan Reynolds’ Spirited becomes most-watched Apple TV+ movie

Spirited has become the most-watched Apple TV+ movie to date, Apple has confirmed.

While the tech giant doesn’t reveal exact Apple TV+ viewership figures,Deadline reports that Spirited has brought in 27 percent new viewers to Apple TV+ since premiering on November 11th.

Vancouver’s own Ryan Reynolds, who co-stars in the Christmas musical comedy alongside Will Ferrell, took to social media to celebrate the milestone.

It should be noted that Apple TV+ only has a couple dozen original movies, so this isn’t as significant a record as it might have been on other streaming services with more content. Still, it’s another feather in Reynolds’ cap, as he’s also the only actor to have three movies — 6 UndergroundRed Notice and The Adam Projectin Netflix’s Top 10.

In Canada, his recent critically-acclaimed Welcome to Wrexham docuseries streams on Disney+. It tells the story of the eponymous Welsh sports team, the world’s third-oldest football club, and features Reynolds and fellow co-owner Rob McElhenney.

Apple, meanwhile, has been ramping up its film production as of late. Following a Best Picture win for CODA earlier this year, the streamer has put out notable films like Causeway with Jennifer Lawrence and the Will Smith-led Emancipation. Next year will also see the likes of Martin Scorsese’s Flowers of the Killer Moon and Ghosted with Chris Evans and Ana De Armas.
