Here are useful apps for following the 2022 FIFA World Cup

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is officially underway in Qatar, and this time around, the tournament is a special one for Canadians given this is the first time the Men’s national team has qualified for the World Cup in 36 years.

We published a guide explaining how you can watch the tournament in Canada online. However, considering how most games start between 5am and 2pm ET (2am/2pm PT), Canadians might not have the time to sit down and watch the matches live.

For the World Cup, the app offers live standings and results. A ‘Top Scorers’ section shows which player is leading the tournament in scoring, while ‘fixtures’ lets you see all the upcoming games and what time they take place.

Being one of the more popular sports apps, TheScore, similar to Flashscore, offers stats and info on a range of leagues from around the world. Currently, the app has a separate ‘World Cup 2022 Coverage’ section with all things FIFA.

The app offers real-time push notification alerts about important in-game events, like goals scored, penalties awarded, penalties missed, red and yellow cards given, and more.

The app also offers live standings, news about recent games and participating teams, and leaders in terms of goals scored, assists and clean sheets. The Witcher 3’s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S update adds 60fps, Netflix armour and more

CD Projekt Red has offered the first full look at its long-awaited PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Complete Edition. 

In a 30-minute presentation, the Polish developer outlined some of the new features that are being offered in the free “Next-Gen Update,” which is also coming to PC. (This really should be a “current-gen update” considering the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have been out for more than two years, but alas.)

To start, there’s the sorts of visual enhancements you’d expect, including 4K support, higher quality textures, improved foliage, more detailed character models and new weather conditions. The game will run at 4K 30fps by default, with options for 60fps (resolution unconfirmed) and ray tracing. A new photo mode to take advantage of the prettier visuals will also be added.

One of the other notable additions is a set of armour inspired by Netflix’s Henry Cavill-led The Witcher series. CD Projekt says you’ll be able to snag Geralt’s new digs as part of a new quest, although specific details weren’t revealed.

While the live-action fantasy show is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s original Witcher novels rather than the games, the new content is coming as part of an ongoing cross-promotional partnership between Netflix and CD Projekt Red. This came after the release of the series drove The Witcher 3 to reach record player counts on Steam.

The Witcher 3‘s Next-Gen Update will release for free on December 14th.

Heineken’s Bluetooth bottle opener wants to help you stop working

Heineken’s ‘The Closer‘ campaign is meant to encourage Canadians to improve their work-life balance, and spend more time with friends and family.

The beer company has a new innovative bottle opener that was developed in partnership with entrepreneur and TV personality Michele Romanow, and it apparently shuts down your work gadgets and apps running nearby when you open a bottle of Heineken with it.

The bottle opener uses Bluetooth to shut down nearby work gadgets, and was developed in response to a survey that showed how Canadians in the early stages of their work life feel impacted by overworking and ‘hustle culture.’

“As the holidays approach, more than half of working Canadians blame the phenomenon known as “hustle culture” for their lack of work-life balance, saying they feel burnt out, according to a new survey commissioned by Heineken Canada,” reads Heineken’s news release.

According to the survey, more than half of legal drinking-age respondents said that they find themselves cancelling or rescheduling plans to work during the holiday season, while roughly 36 percent of the respondents said they overwork to make up for the time they’ll be off by “logging into email, messaging apps and other work-related programs during the season.”

“As an entrepreneur in Canada, I’ve seen too many people burn out in the pursuit of professional goals,” said Romanow, CEO and co-founder of Clearco. “We can all understand the value of hard work, but too many of us undervalue the need to unwind, disconnect, and prioritize our personal lives and own wellbeing.”

The bottle opener is not available to purchase, though Canadians can head to this Instagram post by Heineken Canada, and tag a friend who needs a reminder to switch off, for a chance to win the opener.

SpaceX discounts Starlink RV hardware for Black Friday

Hardware for Starlink RV is on sale for $589 in Canada.

The product regularly retails for $759, and the $170 in savings is just in time for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The service first rolled out to Canadians on the go in select areas in May, granting them high-speed, low-latency internet access.

The discount only applies to the hardware, and users will still need to pay $170/month to access coverage.

Get free AirPods (2nd gen) when you buy an iPhone 14 from Bell

Bell is offering free AirPods (2nd gen) for customers who activate an iPhone 14 on Bell SmartPay with an eligible two-year plan.

Unfortunately, the deal is only for new activations and is only available while supplies last. Moreover, the AirPods will ship separately within four weeks of purchase. The offer is only available with the iPhone 14, so if you wanted the 14 Plus or one of the Pro models, you can’t get the free AirPods.

To get the iPhone 14 on SmartPay (Bell’s branding for device financing), you’ll need to pay either $30/mo or $45.42/mo, depending on whether you want to keep the phone or not.

The $30/mo price is for the ‘Device Return Option,’ which basically discounts the monthly cost of the phone if customers agree to return it (or pay the difference) after 24 months. In other words, you’re just paying $30/mo (or $720 over two years) to rent the iPhone 14.

For the $45.24/mo price, you’d end up paying $1,090.08 over two years, which is actually about $9 less than you’d pay to buy the iPhone 14 outright from Apple. Plus, with the free AirPods, it’s very worth it.

The Airpods (2nd gen) cost $179 on Apple’s website.

Rogers, Bell, and Telus among companies bidding on residual spectrum licences

Several telecom companies have applied to bid on leftover spectrum licenses.

According to Innovation Canada, Bell, Bragg Communications, Cogeco, Ecotel, Rogers, Sogetel, TBayTel, Telus, and Vidéotron have declared an interest.

The auction will include nine 2500 MHz licences, eight 600 MHz licences, and 25 3500 MHz licences. The latter license is what allowed Bell, Rogers, and Telus to launch 5G+ services.

This will be a sealed-bid auction “so that no bidder knows the bids of any other participant,” Innovation Canada’s website states. The highest bid will win. If a tie occurs, the parties will be asked to submit a second bid.
