New Mozilla bundle includes VPN, Firefox Relay with phone number masking

Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox browser, rolled out a new bundled subscription for two of its privacy-oriented products. Now, customers can get Mozilla VPN and Firefox relay for one price.

If you’re not familiar with either product, here’s a quick summary. Mozilla VPN is, well, a VPN service based on WireGuard and Mullvad. The plan covers up to five devices, offers over 500 servers in over 30 countries, and there are no bandwidth restrictions. Importantly, Mozilla promises it doesn’t log network activity and that Mozilla VPN offers device-level encryption. It came to Canada in July 2020 and later expanded to support Mac and Linux.

Mozilla VPN on its own typically costs $4.99 USD per month, billed annually at $59.88 (about $80 CAD) for 12 months.

Firefox Relay, on the other hand, is a web app that lets users create email “masks,” which are alternate emails, so they don’t have to give out their actual email. Relay recently expanded to include phone number masking for those who pay for Relay Premium (which is also included in the new bundle).

Free Firefox Relay users got up to five email masks. There are two tiers of Relay Premium; the first gives access to unlimited email masks and additional features like the ability to block promotional emails or respond to forwarded emails. It costs $1.99 USD ($2.66 CAD) per month or $0.99 USD ($1.32) per month with yearly billing. It jumps up to $3.99 USD ($5.34 CAD) per month with yearly billing to get the phone number masking.

However, with Mozilla’s new bundle, you can get both Mozilla VPN and Relay Premium with phone number masking for $6.99 USD ($9.35 CAD) per month or $83.88 USD ($112.26 CAD) per year. You can sign up for the bundle from either the Mozilla VPN website or the Firefox Relay website.

Ryan Reynolds wants to make Welcome to Wrexham-style show about Ottawa Senators: report

Ryan Reynolds is reportedly looking into producing a documentary on the Ottawa Senators.

Speaking to TSN, Ottawa Sun reporter Bruce Garrioch said the Vancouver-born actor wants to give the Canadian hockey team the Welcome to Wrexham treatment.

That documentary, released earlier this year, follows Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenney’s efforts to run their Wrexham A.F.C. football club. The actors purchased Wrexham, the world’s third-oldest professional association football club, in November 2020, and have given it significant publicity ever since. According to Garrioch, Reynolds hopes to offer a similar behind-the-scenes look at the Senators’ players, staff and fans.

Garrioch said he believes Reynolds has already discussed the idea with the NHL, given his interest in acquiring the team. He added that he thinks the NHL would be all for it, especially considering Reynolds is such a big name with a massive social media following.

It remains to be seen whether such a documentary will be made. For now, though, Welcome to Wrexham is currently streaming on Disney+ Canada. A second season is also in the works. His latest film, Spirited, is also now streaming on Apple TV+ Canada.

Snapchat’s Avatar face filter isn’t quite movie quality….

Snapchat, never one to miss a trend, is hopping aboard the Avatar: The Way of Water hype train with a full Na’vi face filter.

The filter works great, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the same tech James Cameron is using in the next Avatar movies since the ears, eyes and nose look like an Avatar, but the rest looks like a painted blue human face.

The face filter should be located within your Snapchat carousel, but mine was buried far in, so you might have to scroll for a while to find it. That said, it’s pretty funny and looks slightly better than expected.

Snapchat is available on iOS and Android.

Sony Honda EVs might one-up Tesla with built-in PS5

Sony and Honda may team up to bring PlayStation 5 games to electric vehicles (EVs).

Earlier this year, the two Japanese companies formed a joint venture called Sony Honda Mobility, and its CEO, Izumi Kawanishi, is now speaking on its potential for gaming. In an interview with The Financial Times, Kawanishi said it’s “technologically possible” to integrate PS5 support into Sony Honda Mobility’s future vehicles.

“Sony has content, services and entertainment technologies that move people. We are adapting these assets to mobility, and this is our strength against Tesla,” said Kawanishi.

Sony Honda Mobility plans to release its first EV in 2025, with a North American release planned for 2026. Meanwhile, Tesla has been slowly adding support for games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Cuphead, although it has yet to follow through with CEO Elon Musk’s promises to bring the massively popular RPG Cyberpunk 2077 to its EVs. Streaming services like Netflix and the U.S.-only Hulu are also available in Tesla vehicles.

That said, Tesla’s entertainment offerings rely on licensing, while Sony’s advantage, as Kawanishi points out, is already having its own properties. This includes massively popular gaming franchises like The Last of Us, God of War and Uncharted, as well as film properties like Spider-Man and Ghostbusters.

It should be noted, however, that Kawanishi’s comments aren’t actual confirmation that we’ll see PS5 games in Honda vehicles. Further, 2025-26 is quite a ways off, and the PS5 — which released in November 2020 — will presumably be at the end of its life cycle by that point.

Still, it’s interesting to hear about the potential of such technology, and time will tell how Sony Honda Mobility will use it in its vehicles.

Here are some of the funniest Pokémon Scarlet and Violet glitches

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are the latest titles to come out of Game Freak’s and The Pokémon Company’s mainline series.

The two titles feature some of the best gameplay concepts, Pokémon designs and storylines we’ve seen in the series in years. Unfortunately, the game is also plagued by rampant glitches, poor animation and generally bad performance, making it feel more like a Bethesda title than something from The Pokémon Company.

Pokémon is the largest-grossing game series in the world, and even though it’s running on the admittedly underpowered Nintendo Switch, titles like Breath of the Wild and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 are open-world games that perform a lot better than Scarlet and Violet.

While I’m an avid Pokémon fan, and I’m genuinely enjoying my experience in the Paldea region, I wouldn’t recommend the title (which I’ll explain in my more in-depth look at the game coming soon). During my time with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, I’ve encountered a couple of crashes, nearly minute-long loading screens, frame-rate issues, pauses that make me feel like the game is about to crash, and weird screen glitches — and this is all on top of poor animation.

Granted, I think a lot of these issues could be fixed with a few patches.

Here are some examples of a few of the top glitches I’ve seen people record (to be fair, most of the issues I’ve encountered haven’t been this bad):

Avatar: The Way of Water uses crazy tech, but does it look better or worse?

James Cameron has been hyping up his Avatar saga a lot lately, but the more I watch the trailers for Avatar: The Way of Water, the less I believe this movie will break as many boundaries as the first.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an Avatar hater. I enjoyed the first movie and loved how it pushed the special effects and CGI industry. The overarching plot was trite, but the world, the action and the intense filmmaking drew me in.

As the trailers for The Way of Water have been released, I’ve realized I expected the movie to look nearly as good as real life, and while it’s still visually impressive, some characters have crossed into the uncanny valley.

Several shots are outstanding, and there’s no denying that the water physics are top-notch. Even the reflective properties of water seem to be taken into account in this film, albeit there’s maybe a little too much on characters’ skin. The environment is also stunning, with realistic rocks, foliage and shadows.

But the characters’ faces are undeniably bizarre. I don’t want to call them unnatural because the problem is that they look too natural, in some respects. The human elements shine through more clearly in The Way of Water, and while it might help the actors relay a more believable digital performance, it seems too much like a human, which adds an odd aura to the film. There’s something about how the jaw structure seems to be the same as the real actors, making them appear less cat-like than in the first film.

Beyond that, The Way of the Water‘s story focuses more on the family and children of the main characters from the first film. These younger Na’vi have less pronounced facial features, making their cat-esque noses look even more human, breaking the effect. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but this beautiful CG world feels broken by a human face peering through the CGI makeup.

In a recent interview with GQ, The Way of Water director says that his team used a variety of cameras to film the actors performing the motions to get actual real-life movement and human interactions. That footage was then handed off to effects company Wētā to paint the world on top of. It’s an interesting approach and has reportedly resulted in The Way of Water becoming one of the most expensive movies ever made.

I’m sure once it hits theatres, the film will hold up and look great, but with all the hype surrounding the next generation of Avatar films, it has a lot to live up to.
