Amazon’s Echo and Alexa division could be in trouble

Amazon’s Echo and Alexa-enabled division, ‘Worldwide Digital,’ is on pace to lose roughly $10 billion USD (roughly $13.3 billion CAD) this year. The division’s total operating loss for the first quarter of 2022 sits at $3 billion USD (about $4 billion CAD) — the highest amount any division at the tech giant lost this quarter.

With this in mind, the future of Worldwide Digital is reportedly uncertain, according to a report from Business Insider. It appears Amazon’s plan of subsidizing hardware sales by selling products and services through Echo and Alexa-enabled devices, isn’t working out how it hoped it would.

Business Insider says that its sources told it that “Alexa is a colossal failure of imagination” and that “it was a wasted opportunity,” emphasizing that there’s “no clear directive for the devices.” However, the report also mentions that Amazon is still currently committed to its Echo and Alexa devices — at least for now.

The New York Times recently reported that Amazon has plans to layoff roughly 10,000 employees. More recent reports indicate that these layoffs will start this coming Wednesday, November 22nd.

Anecdotally, I don’t know anyone that has purchased an Amazon product or service directly through an Echo device via voice controls. In fact, I’ve removed most of my Echo devices from my home and switched over to Google’s Nest/Home products since in most cases, I find them more responsive and better devices.

Musk talks encrypted DMs, voice and video chat in Twitter meeting

Twitter owner Elon Musk discussed plans to encrypt direct messages (DMs) and add new features like video and voice chat. Moreover, Musk may have the creator of the secure messaging platform Signal on board to help.

The Verge reported the details of a meeting between Musk and Twitter employees on Monday, which the publication obtained a recording of. In the meeting, Musk had presentation slides titled “Twitter 2.0,” which was the same term he used in an email to employees demanding they commit to long hours or quit (spoiler: a bunch quit).

“We want to enable users to be able to communicate without being concerned about their privacy, [or] without being concerned about a data breach at Twitter causing all of their DMs to hit the web, or think that maybe someone at Twitter could be spying on their DMs,” Musk said in the meeting (The Verge notes that Twitter DMs have leaked before).

Encrypted DMs are a top priority for Musk and his Twitter 2.0 vision — during the meeting, he praised Signal and said he spoke with creator Moxie Marlinspike, who was “potentially willing to help out” with encrypting Twitter DMs. Interestingly, Marlinspike previously worked at Twitter and wanted to do encrypted DMs years ago but was denied. He left the company and created Signal.

It’s not clear what Marlinspike’s “help” would look like. If I had to guess, I could see Twitter adopting the Signal Protocol for encrypted DMs, similar to Meta’s WhatsApp, rather than Twitter going its own route. Whatever happens with encrypted DMs will ultimately come down to the current whims of Musk.

The Nintendo Switch Sports Golf update drop on November 28

Switch Sports gamers will be pleased to know that golf is finally making its way to the motion-controlled game.

Golf arrives on Nintendo Switch Sports on Monday, November 28th, and will be added to the game as a free update.

The golf update features a total of 21 holes from the Wii Sports Golf games.

Users would be able to play Golf locally, while a ‘Survival Golf’ mode would allow for online gaming where eight players can battle it out in one knockout-per-hole format.

Nintendo Switch Sports released in April 2022. The Golf update for the title was initially planned to come out in Fall 2022, but was later delayed to “Holidays 2022.”

Elsewhere, since its release in April, the game received a free update that allowed users to strap a Joy-Con to their legs to play soccer, making the experience far more realistic. The addition of Golf will be the title’s second major update.

New Pixel 7 ad takes subtle jabs at FIFA and Qatar

A new Google Pixel 7 World Cup ad that aims to show off the device’s prowess, including its inclusivity features, also doubles as a subtle diss towards FIFA and its decision to ‘sell’ the 2024 World Cup to Qatar.

Titled “Google Pixel 7: The Beautiful Game Belongs to All of Us,” the one-minute-long ad shows off features like Macro Focus, Magic Eraser and Super Res Zoom, while more inclusive features, like Live Translate, Face Unblur, and improved Real Tone photography are also showed off.

Check out the ad below:

The ad also features former Colombian national team captain Carlos Valderrama, and the U.S. Women’s team player Meghan Rapinoem while flags and jerseys of several other participating nations are also clearly depicted in a show of diversity and solidarity.

Fan ‘Pride’ imagery is also spread across the ad, which contrasts the beliefs of the tournament hosts. Qatar’s anti-LGBTQIA+ stance is strict, with fines, prison sentences of up to seven years and even death by stoning.

Participating teams have also been asked not to wear ‘OneLove’ armbands in support of LGBTQ rights during the tournament, and any team captain that does wear the rainbow-coloured band can be penalized with a yellow card.

“We are very frustrated by the FIFA decision, which we believe is unprecedented,” reads England, Wales and the Netherlands’ joint statement.

Elsewhere, harsh treatment of migrant workers, accusations of bribery and corruption, and strict dress codes for female fans, are just a few of the several reasons that paint a not-so-pretty picture of the oil-rich Gulf nation.

“The Beautiful Game Belongs to All of Us,” is an appropriate title for the Google video to point out to FIFA and Qatar that although the tournament is taking place on Qatar’s soil, the game belongs to the fans and the player’s participating, and not people with deep pockets sitting behind desks.

Tesla Full Self-Driving update now live in Toronto

Just before winter (the worst driving season) Tesla has unlocked Toronto’s downtown core as a full self-driving beta location (FSD).

At the end of  February 2022, Telsa started testing its full self-driving beta software in Canada after testing it in the U.S. throughout 2021. However, certain areas like downtown Toronto were excluded since the vehicles experienced trouble dealing with the streetcars that make up the downtown core of Toronto transit.

Twitter users pointed out that the software had a difficult time anticipating the street cars stopping in the left lane, and that there is a chance of continuing through the right lane, even though passengers would start to disembark. Since the geofence is lifted, it’s expected that this problem has been fixed. That said, make sure to look right before getting off a street car, as always.

To get the Full Self Driving beta that works in downtown Toronto, you need to be on ‘update 10.69.3.1,’ according to a report from blogTO

Musk is ‘holding off’ relaunching Twitter Blue until he is confident about stopping impersonation

After the blunder of a lunch that was Twitter Blue with Verification, and its prompt end, Elon Musk decided to relaunch the subscription service on November 29th.

Now, according to a recent Tweet, it appears as though it’ll be a little longer before Twitter users would be able to get their hands on the subscription service.

“Holding off relaunch of Bue Verified until there is high confidence of stopping impersonation,” he wrote. “Will probably use different color check for organizations than individuals.”

Additionally, we already know that once relaunched, only accounts older than 90 days would be able to purchase the subscription. “Newly created Twitter accounts will not be able to subscribe to Twitter Blue for 90 days,” reads the ‘About Twitter Blue’ page.

Other than that, it is currently unknown what other measures Musk and team are taking to combat imposters.

The initial rollout of Twitter Blue with Verification was haphazard, and laden with a myriad of fake imposter accounts, so much so that a fake, yet verified Eli Lilly Twitter account’s Tweet that read “We are excited to announce insulin is free now,” causing the company’s market cap to shrink by billions.

Subsequently, this caused a horde of key advertisers to mark the platform as “high risk,” and leave the platform, including IPG, Omnicom and even GroupM. Even Cosette, a media and marketing agency based in Quebec City that manages ads for the federal government, has asked government agencies to pause activity on Twitter.

Elsewhere, even after multiple rounds of layoffs at Twitter, Musk intends to cut down the platform’s sales and partnerships teams.

Hyperkin is remaking the Xbox 360’s iconic gamepad for modern consoles

Accessory maker Hyperkin is releasing an officially licensed remake of the original Xbox 360 gamepad, offering those who spent time with Microsoft’s golden era console a blast from the past.

The ‘Xenon’ gamepad, named after the Xbox 360’s first internal development codename, looks the same as the now 17-year-old controller, only it now features ‘Menu,’ ‘View’ and ‘Share’ buttons, alongside a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C charging. The gamepad is available in ‘White,’ ‘Black,’ ‘Pink,’ and ‘Red.’

It’s unclear how much Xenon plans to charge for the gamepad, but given its massive Duke controller remake costs roughly $120, expect to pay a lot of money to relive your childhood.

bHopefully, Hyperkin has fixed some of the classic gamepad’s key issues, including its splitting joysticks and wonky D-pad that often leans to one side. This is a tough sell for me, even as someone who has fond memories of the Xbox 360 era. Microsoft’s Xbox gamepad hasn’t changed much over the years and has mostly been refined between generations. The Series X/S gamepad is near perfect, and I don’t want to relive the slightly less comfortable Xbox 360-era controller in 2022.

Hyperkin’s Xenon is compatible with the Xbox Series X/S and Windows 10/11 devices. It’s unclear when the gamepad will release.
