Microsoft Surface suffers a terrible fate after latest Bills game

During the most recent Buffalo Bills game against the Miami Dolphins, the Dolphins won, and a Microsoft Surface tablet, unfortunately, had to suffer. The Bills’ offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, smashed his tablet as the Dolphins secured the win.

Dorsey ripped off his headset, threw his hat, picked up his tablet and slammed the tablet against his desk multiple times.

The Bills could have won the game, but the team ran out of time, losing 19-21. With such a close game, I could see why the coordinator got extremely upset.

While I’m not someone who’s all that invested in football, I’ve taken out my anger on a controller after losing to Rom the Vacuous in Bloodborne after getting really close to beating the boss.

Recently, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, Tom Brady, spiked a Surface tablet to the ground after his team messed up a pass.

It looks like the Microsoft Surface is the tablet to break.

iPhone 15 Ultra rumoured to feature two selfie cameras

The iPhone 14 series only recently launched, but the rumour mill never stops churning, and the iPhone 15 Ultra is the most recent target of leaks.

Firstly, it was previously rumoured that Apple will be rebranding its iPhone Pro Max line and now calling it ‘iPhone Ultra.’

The most recent rumour from Majin Bu indicates that the iPhone 15 Ultra will change its design from last year’s iPhone 14 Pro series. The change will bring dual front-facing cameras to the iPhone 15 series. Details about the secondary camera are scarce. However, the iPhone 15 Pro will lack this secondary camera.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a flagship with multiple selfie cameras. In previous years the secondary has been used for ultra-wide pictures or more accurate face detection.

Further, the iPhone 15 Ultra is also poised to come with 256GB base storage. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, may only sport the standard 128GB storage, according to the leak.

It was previously rumoured that the iPhone 15 would also come with a USB-C port, and Majin Bu’s leak corroborates this rumour.

Of course, the iPhone 15 series is about a full year away; therefore, we should take this leak with a grain of salt.

Users report experiencing AirPods Pro (2nd-Gen) connectivity issues

Reports have emerged indicating that Apple’s recently released AirPods Pro (2nd-Gen) could suffer from intermittent connectivity issues.

According to MacRumors, several readers reached out to the publication and posted on its forums outlining a problem where the new AirPods Pro show that they’re connected to the iPhone or iPad, but no audio plays. Some people also mention that they’ve encountered issues when connecting the new AirPods Pro to non-Apple devices.

For what it’s worth, my experience with the AirPods Pro (2nd-Gen) has been relatively solid so far. I’ve run into some wonkiness with getting the wireless earbuds to switch from my iPhone 14 Pro to my MacBook Pro (2021), and ‘Adaptive Transparency’ sometimes highlights audio it shouldn’t, but my connection to devices has otherwise been solid.

That said, I did occasionally experience a problem with the AirPods Pro (1st-Gen) similar to what MacRumors describes.

Since the AirPods Pro (2nd-Gen) only released Friday, it’s difficult to know how widespread this issue is. It’s also worth noting that reports regarding the issue problem haven’t yet appeared on Reddit or Twitter.

For more on the AirPods Pro (2nd-Gen), check out my review of the earbuds.

Netflix to open first studio focused on creating original games

Netflix is forming its first in-house game development studio in Helsinki, Finland.

The developer will focus on producing original games for the streamer’s nascent gaming platform, Netflix Games.

In a blog post, Netflix said it chose Helsinki because it’s “home to some of the best game talent in the world.” Some Finnish developers include Remedy Entertainment (Control), Housemarque (Returnal), Rovio (Angry Birds) and Supercell (Clash of Clans). The developer has also appointed industry veteran Marko Lastikka as the studio director of its Helsinki office. Lastikka previously worked at Zynga for five years and Electronic Arts for four.

While this is the first gaming studio that Netflix has built from the ground up, it does own three other developers: Helsinki’s Next Games (The Waking Dead: No Man’s Land), California’s Night School Studio (Oxenfree) and Texas’ Boss Fight Entertainment (myVEGAS Bingo).

That said, we don’t know much about what any of these teams are working on. As Netflix admits in its blog post, “it’s still early days” and “creating a game can take years,” so it will likely be a while before we see more.

Earlier this year, Netflix acknowledged that it’s been “quiet” on its plans, saying the months following the November 2021 launch of Netflix Games have been about “learning and experimenting and trying to figure out what things are going to actually resonate with our members.” An August report also indicated that fewer than one percent of overall Netflix subscribers are even using Netflix Games.

What we do know, though, is that the company recently struck up a partnership with Ubisoft to bring three exclusive titles to Netflix Games in 2023. Oxenfree was also surprise launched on the platform over the weekend as part of the company’s Tudum event.

Netflix Games is included at no additional cost with a Netflix subscription and all games available on the platform are ad-free.

Apple starts iPhone 14/14 Plus manufacturing in India

Last month, a Bloomberg report covered by MobileSyrup suggested that starting in October, Apple’s iPhone 14 would be manufactured in India. October is still a week away, though it seems the manufacturing has already begun.

The Cupertino, California-based company made the announcement today, Monday, September 26th, via Bloomberg, roughly three weeks after unveiling the new iPhone 14 lineup.

Initially, India-based manufacturing plants only assembled Apple’s iPhone SE, but have progressed to assemble other Apple devices too, including the iPhone 13, with Foxconn being the main supplier in the nation for the iPhone 13, and Wistron responsible for the iPhone SE. Normally, manufacturing doesn’t start taking place in the same calendar year as the device’s release. This makes the iPhone 14 the first smartphone to have its production shifted from China to India in mere weeks.

“We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” an Apple spokesperson told Bloomberg.

The devices are being manufactured in Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility near the city of Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu.

People familiar with the matter say that resolve in supply chain issues sped up the transition of manufacturing from China to India, quoting that Apple is seeking alternatives to China due to its pandemic-related lockdowns and clashes with the US government. “India is now an attractive location for manufacturing as it offers better labour cost structure while Apple is looking to reduce geopolitical risks,” said Jeff Pu, an analyst at Haitong International Securities, in a statement given to Bloomberg.

It is worth noting that Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility in India will manufacture the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models, while the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are still being exclusively manufactured in China. The Indian factory is reported to make roughly five percent of the total monthly iPhone manufacturing volume, which translates to about five percent of the total iPhone volume.

Canadians will continue to get spam calls for the foreseeable future

A day rarely goes by when I don’t answer a spam call.

Most of the time, I ignore numbers that are coming from places I’ve never been to around the world. But sometimes, the numbers match my area code, and I ask myself if this is one of the many calls I’ve been waiting for.

99 percent of the time, it isn’t, and I fall victim to call spoofing again.

While I wasn’t able to determine if spam calls increased around the country, I know a lot of my colleagues and family members have complained about these calls.

But why is this, especially since the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said these calls could be reduced under SHAKEN/STIR technology?

What is SHAKEN/STIR?

In short, SHAKEN/STIR technology is used to authenticate callers, letting users know if the call they’re receiving is a spam call.

STIR, or Secure Telephony Information Revisited, validates callers. Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information using Tokens (SHAKEN) is the framework network providers use.

The CRTC ordered network providers to implement the technology in November 2021, after several deadline expansions.

Your next question might run somewhere along the lines of “if SHAKEN/STIR is already in place, why am I still getting spam calls?

That’s because the technology doesn’t cover all calls, only those on IP-based phone networks. Internet protocol (IP) networks send and receive calls over the internet. However, a “significant portion of the Canadian phone network” operates under Time Difference Multiplexing (TDM) technology, a CRTC spokesperson told MobileSyrup. TDM technology transmits multiple digital signals over one channel.

“STIR/SHAKEN only works when the entire call patch is over IP,” the spokesperson said. It won’t work if calls are made and terminated on IP networks, but are interconnected over TDM.

Customer equipment must also be taken into account. If customers receiving a call have an IP connection through their carriers, their calls wouldn’t be verified through the STIR/SHAKEN framework if they’re utilizing landline or wireless phones that aren’t IP compatible, such as landlines functioning on copper networks.

“It is possible for carriers to properly attest calls even if the connection between the costumers’ premises and their core network is made through a non-IP connection,” the spokesperson said.

What are providers doing?

Bell, Telus, and Rogers previously stated they all implemented this technology by the November 2021 deadline.

Part of the CRTC’s requirements includes telecom companies filing status reports; answering questions on network readiness and the percentage of authenticated calls. The first report deadline since the November implementation date was May 31st.

While a majority of the answers providing specifics are redacted, supporting information paints a small picture.

Telus, for example, states STIR/SHAKEN technology within its network is fully operational but it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. “While the core platform has so far proven to be highly reliable, the introduction of the STIR/SHAKEN protocol has not been without significant challenges.”

The application also states that “a significant percentage” of volume remains on TDM. “While TELUS continues to encourage its partners to move towards SIP interconnections, it will take some time to fully achieve this goal.”

A company spokesperson confirmed to MobileSyrup that TDM equipment in its network remains a constraint in all customers being able to access STIR/SHAKEN technology.

When asked if Telus would change network requirements, the representative said: “Telus is migrating customers and traffic to IP/SIP, which will mean that more calls within the Telus network and between networks can be signed and verified.”

Telus isn’t the only provider that filed a report. You can view all of the reports here.

So…spam calls?

To give you a straight answer, spam calls are still very much a reality, despite the implementation of STIR/SHAKEN. As the CRTC points out, it’ll remain a reality for the next while.

“As carriers continue to upgrade their network to IP technology, make compatible phones available to their customers and improve their capacity to properly authenticate caller IDs, more and more Canadian will be able to see the effect of the STIR/SHAKEN.”

Canada drops COVID-19 border restrictions, ArriveCAN no longer mandatory

More than two years after being implemented, Canada is ready to bid farewell to its COVID-19 border restrictions.

Several unnamed sources cited by media outlets in recent weeks suggested that the change was coming, and now, according to GlobalNews, the Liberal government has officially announced the changes.

The changes go into effect starting October 1st, and make it so that travellers, regardless of their citizenship, don’t have to provide proof of vaccination upon entry into the nation. Further, they don’t have to go through random COVID testing, quartine/isolate or use the ArriveCAN app. Notably, travellers won’t need to wear masks on planes and trains in the nation.

“The results of border tests carried about at the Public Health Agency (of Canada) over the past months have indicated that importations of COVID cases and its variant no longer influence in a significant way the evolution of the pandemic in Canada,” Jean-Yves Duclos, Health Minister, told reporters at a news conference, via Global News. “The higher level of cases of hospitalizations in Canada are largely explained by the domestic transmission of the virus and the rate of vaccination today.”

Lower death rates, high vaccination numbers, alongside the availability of booster doses, rapid tests, and treatments for COVID-19, aided the government in making the decision.

Although mask requirements have been lifted, travellers are still recommended to wear a mask to protect themselves. Furthermore, if required, the government can reinstate the border restrictions in the future, depending on new data or if a new foreign COVID variant appears.

Apple’s 2023 lineup could feature new iPhone 15 Ultra

Apple could have big plans for its 2023 iPhone lineup.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant could call its high-end 2023 smartphone the iPhone 15 “Ultra” instead of “Pro Max” as it has for the last few years.

Gurman says that along with the notable name change, the iPhone 15 will feature the most significant redesign in the last few years, including the addition of USB-C and other “bigger changes,” though it’s unclear what will actually be different.

Apple has shifted the iPhone’s naming convention quite a bit over the years, first using the ‘S’ name (i.e. iPhone 4s) for iterative update years, and at one point, calling the larger version of the smartphone the ‘Plus.’ The company brought the ‘Plus’ name back alongside the release of its iPhone 14 series, which also marked the end of the mini line.

Along with the high-end iPhone name change, the iPhone 15 will reportedly switch to USB-C. The change is spurred by the European Union (EU) legally forcing all smartphones released after 2024 to feature the port. Further, according to display analyst Ross Young, the entire iPhone 15 line is expected to feature the smartphone’s ‘Dynamic Island.’

Finally, Gurman says that there’s a possibility Apple may not hold another event this fall because its updates to the Mac mini, MacBook Pro and iPad Pro are expected to be iterative. It’s worth noting that Apple’s more recent strategy of streaming three fall events was a product of the ongoing pandemic, and previously, the tech giant held one in-person keynote in September.

Google Wallet tap to pay not working due to bugged security prompt

Some people have run into issues tapping their Android phones to pay at stores due to an odd Google Wallet issue. Those encountering the issue receive a pop-up noting that their device “doesn’t meet security requirements,” warning that the phone “may be rooted or running uncertified software.”

Complaints have emerged on Reddit from users with Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy smartphones, but the people encountering the issue don’t have rooted or modified phones. Worse, common solutions like clearing the Play Store’s app cache don’t seem to make a difference.

Security check pop-up | Credit: u/Norci

However, Android Police suggests the problem could be related to a change to Android’s security check process. Google Wallet typically performs a device check using the ‘SafetyNet Attestation API’ when users try to make a payment. That check looks for things that could make transmitting card information extra risky, such as unlocked bootloaders. Phones that fail the check see the above pop-up.

Android Police explains that Google is in the process of replacing the SafetyNet Attestation API with a new API dubbed ‘Play Integrity.’ The switch is supposed to happen in 2024, but Google has forged ahead with its own apps — for example, Google Wallet.

The publication suggests the switch to Play Integrity could be connected to the new wave of failed safety checks for people with smartphones that shouldn’t fail the checks. Android Police points to RSA Security’s SecurID Authenticator app, which recently faced the same problem after the 4.1.5 update last week.

RSA explained in a community forum bulletin that it switched from SafetyNet to Play Integrity for SecurID security checks, and then the app started detecting a rooted state and prevented people from using the app. After working with Google on the issue, RSA pushed version 4.1.6 out over the weekend with a fix for the issue.

That said, it’s not clear whether the Play Integrity check is behind the Google Wallet problem. An Android Police employee has a Galaxy S22 Ultra with the old Google Pay app that is also impacted by the issue, so it’s possible something else is going on. Moreover, Google appears to have switched Wallet to Play Integrity in August, so it’s odd that it’d be causing a problem now.

Regardless, the problem seems to have a wide enough spread that Google will hopefully push out a fix sooner rather than later.
