This Android app brings the ‘Dynamic Island’ to Android

Although Apple’s iPhones didn’t shake things up too much this year, the iPhone 14 Pro models’ fancy new ‘Dynamic Island’ has definitely caught the attention of smartphone users.

If you want to get a taste of what it’s like to use the Dynamic Island, but don’t want to shell out the money for an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max — or if you just don’t want to give up your Android phone — then good news for you. A new app called ‘dynamicSpot’ has arrived on Android that mimics the behaviour of the Dynamic Island, turning your phone’s camera cut-out into an interactable notification bubble.

Like the Dynamic Island, users can tap the dynamicSpot to open a notification in its respective app — like a text in Messages, or music in Spotify. Moreover, you can press-and-hold on the dynamicSpot to get a larger preview with music controls.

The best part is it requires virtually no effort to set up dynamicSpot. To use it, simply head to the Play Store and grab the app, then follow the set-up steps. The app guides you through each step, which includes selecting which apps will utilize the spot (you can just select them all, or pick a few you want to use), enable notification access, and the permission to draw on screen so dynamicSpot can appear over top of other stuff.

Boom, that’s it! And, for the privacy-conscious out there, dynamicSpot says the app doesn’t have internet access, so it doesn’t collect or share any data.

There are other features as well for those interested in customizing the experience. For example, you can tweak the dimensions of the pop-up, allow two pop-ups at once, enable options to clear it with a swipe, and more. You can also have the pop-up appear for various battery events, like when you plug the phone in to charge. And, if you want, you can unlock a few extra features for $6.49.

The app is still in beta, so expect some bigs. In my brief time with it, it seemed to work okay but was a tad janky at times. You can download dynamicSpot for free on the Play Store.

To download the update, head to ‘General,’ ‘Software Update,’ and finally, select ‘Download.’

Given how recently iOS 16 dropped, Apple moved pretty swiftly to release this fix.

YouTube and TikTok want the government to address their definition of Canadian content

Steve de Eyre, TikTok’s director of public policy and government affairs in Canada, said Bill C-11 makes content creators “collateral damage.”

Also known as the Online Streaming Act, the bill focuses on regulating streaming services and promoting Canadian content, or “CanCon.” It has faced fierce backlash since Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez introduced it. One point of contention is how it will benefit user-generated content, with Rodriguez and CRTC chair Ian Scott seemingly making opposite statements.

Speaking at the Transport and Communications Senate committee, de Eyre said the bill wasn’t written to protect digital creators.

“This is why it’s so important that the Senate take a sober second look at this bill and carefully consider the impact it will have on digital first creators.”

de Eyre believes the committee, which is currently studying the matter, can make some changes to the bill to address ongoing concerns.

His first concern surrounds the promotion of CanCon. As mentioned, platforms will be required to promote Canadian content. But de Eyre argues TikTok has concerns if much of the content created by Canadians would be considered CanCon.

“CanCon rules are largely meant to support artists in the performing arts like music and acting.” However, he said most of the popular Canadian TikTok creators don’t fall into these categories, including bloggers and gamers.

The creators are “subordinated behind traditional legacy players that can check the right boxes with the CRTC.”

Jeanette Patell, YouTube Canada’s head of government relations and public policy, raised similar concerns. She told the committee the diversity of YouTube’s content, creators, and users makes Canadians on the platform successful. But that will change with Bill C-11.

Bill C-11 would require YouTube to surface content according to the CRTC’s priorities, rather than those of Canadians. And that hurts everyone that uses our platform,” Patell said.

She added the CRTC’s ability to control algorithms to promote CanCon “would actually backfire for the very creators that it attempts to support.”

“[It]  explicitly gives a government regulator authority over what content is prioritized and how and where content is presented to Canadians, handing the CRTC the power to decide who wins and who loses.”

de Eyre’s second concern would be to clarify that short clips containing music, video, or amateur performances, don’t equal professional content.

The CRTC, which will be responsible for enacting the bill, will use three sets of criteria to determine if content can be regulated:

  • if the content generates revenue
  • if the program is broadcasted through traditional forms like radio, for example
  • if the content has a unique identifier under any international standards system.

Patell said the criteria would include “effectively everything on YouTube.”

de Eyre echoed that statement. “As written, any video on Tiktok that includes music, which is the majority of content posted on our platform, would meet all three criteria to be considered professional.”

Various other parties have spoken to the committee on the matter in the past, including Canada’s Privacy Commissioner, and Disney.

iPhone 14 Pro features hidden setting enabling black-and-white always-on display

If you’re like me and you’ve turned off the iPhone 14 Pro/iPhone 14 Pro Max’s always-on display because it’s killing the smartphones’ battery too quickly, this hidden option might interest you.

As reported by 9to5mac, a somewhat hidden option removes all colour from the iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on screen, making it more like the always-on displays offered by Android manufacturers like Google and Samsung.

To get the black-and-white always-on display up and running, you need to enable a ‘Focus Mode’ called ‘Dim Lock Screen,’ which darkens the iPhone 14 Pro’s display with always-on enabled.

To find this feature, head to ‘Settings’ and select ‘Focus.’ Next, tap ‘Options’ and ‘Enable Dim Lock Screen.’ And that’s it. The next time the smartphone’s always-on display is active, it will display the date, time and your selection of widgets in black-and-white and not colour.

iPhone 14 Pro always-on screen

The downside is that you’ll need to keep the ‘Dim Lock Screen’ Focus Mode enabled all day for the feature to continue working. It’s also important to note that Widgets for apps like Spotify will still appear on the lockscreen in colour.

Apple could eventually bring a more official version of this feature to iOS 16, but given the tech giant’s insistent on forcing features on users even when they don’t work as advertised, this is highly unlikely.

Still, this could be worth a try if you want to save battery life and still have the always-on display enabled.

Microsoft plans to ‘update and innovate’ Surface Duo form factor

Following rumours that the Surface Duo 2 might have been discontinued, Microsoft says it’s not and that it plans to “update and innovate” the form factor — Surface Duo 3, anyone?

Here’s how it all went down. Windows Central reported that the Surface Duo 2 was out of stock basically everywhere, from Best Buy to Microsoft’s own store in the U.S. (As an aside, currently ‘Obsidian’ variant is out of stock at Microsoft Canada, but the ‘Glacier’ variant is in stock and $600 off right now.) Anyway, Microsoft responded to the Windows Central report with the following statement:

“We are experiencing supply constraints that are impacting stock of Surface Duo 2 units. The product is not being discontinued. We continue to update and to innovate on this form factor and are excited by customer interest.”

So, if you want to buy a Surface Duo 2 but can’t, it’s because Microsoft is dealing with supply issues, not because it discontinued the product. But that second line in the statement is far more intriguing. Updates and innovations? How exciting.

Let’s start with updates. Google released Android 12L with a bunch of improvements for tablets and foldables. Last year, Windows Central said Microsoft was working on bringing 12L to the Surface Duo 2. That likely falls under the “update” category Microsoft mentioned in its statement, and hopefully will mean using the Surface Duo 2 will be smoother with official Android support for dual-screen devices.

As for the “innovate” part, it’s less clear what this could mean. Likely, it’ll be a Surface Duo 3 (or some other take on a foldable smartphone). Again, Windows Central previously reported Microsoft considered going to a single-screen foldable design, like Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, rather than the current two-screen Duo design.

Whether we’ll see any of these changes from Microsoft in the future remains to be seen. The company does have a hardware event happening in October — perhaps we’ll learn about a new Duo device there.

A ‘Tonight Show’ experience is live in Fortnite

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Samsung Mobile have teamed up to bring a ‘Tonight at the Rock Powered by Samsung Galaxy’ metaverse gaming experience to Fortnite.

The experience will be a part of Fortnite Creative and showcase an in-game recreation of iconic New York City sights, including Central Park and Times Square, “alongside notable The Tonight Show locations like Rockefeller Center and Studio 6B.” The companies say this will allow players to take a virtual trip around the building and explore what the studio has to offer, including ‘The Tonight Show’s” writer room and a virtual Samsung Store.

The experience includes minigames native to The Tonight Show, like Giant Pong, and game modes like Race Up the Rock, Cabbie Crash Course, and Escape Studio 6B. “Over the past few years, I’ve been lucky enough to partner with Samsung on almost any idea we can dream of,” said Fallon in a statement. “This time, I asked them if we could do something with Fortnite. They immediately said yes, and we’ve created a gaming experience that brings together fans of The Tonight Show and fans of Fortnite.”

‘Tonight at the Rock’ launched in-game on Tuesday, September 20th. Check out the virtual world for yourself using map code 2678-5325-0723.

Affirm launches in Canada with Amazon partnership

Payment network Affirm is now in Canada.

The buy-now-pay-later service is launching outside of the U.S. with the help of Amazon.

Customers who choose to pay with Affirm on the e-commerce retailer will be subjected to a “soft credit check” to determine available payment options.

Approved shoppers who spend $50 or more can break their payment into monthly installments. Customers will be able to keep track of how many payments they have left. The company says a late or missed payment won’t be a cause for concern, as customers won’t see their total increased or a late or hidden fee charge.

“We are excited to bring customers shopping on Amazon.ca the opportunity to pay for everyday items and milestone purchases with Affirm as we deliver the same level of transparency and flexibility that customers have come to expect from Affirm across our markets in North America and beyond,” Geoff Kott, Affirm’s chief revenue officer, said.

Nothing’s next earbuds remove silicone tips and revamp case

Nothing is drumming up its never-ending hype cycle again for its new Ear (Stick) wireless earbuds. And yes, that’s the name the company is going with this time; Not Ear (2), but Ear (Stick).

These buds come in a tube case and don’t feature silicon tips like the previous Nothing Ear (1)s. Nothing says that the new Ear Stick is lighter and more comfortable and offers a moulded design.

The earbuds were shown off at the Chet Lo runway show in London, England, Nothing’s hometown. The tease featured the new buds in models’ ears and stuffed in unique shear bags, which will also be on sale later this year.

The same press release says that Nothing will release specs for the earbuds sometime before the end of the year, but it seems like some high-ranking members of the official Nothing Discord might get information surrounding specs sooner, so ideally, these details will leak soon.

Based on the press images, there seems to be a subtle texture on the white centre tube. This is likely to offer grip as you pop open the case, through the cut-out in the transparent section points at the camera in the picture above.

You can see another angle from a smartphone shot from the fashion show. In this image, the buds look pretty big in the model’s ears, but it’s difficult to tell without more context surrounding their size.

Ideally, the Ear (Stick)s will sound better and offer a more consistent Bluetooth connection than the Ear (1)s. While my review of Nothing’s first earbuds is positive, I emphasized their reasonable cost, beautiful design and comfortable fit. Focusing on a new design instead of making the software and hardware work better together could be risky for Nothing.

Traditionally, most wireless earbuds with silicon tips and active noise-cancelling are more expensive than models without these higher-end features. That leads me to believe the Ear Stick should be cheaper than the Nothing Ear (1)s. At $130, it will be hard to shave that price down, and still offer a compelling answer to wireless earbuds like the AirPods and Galaxy Buds Live.

If you’re still curious to catch a glimpse of the Ear (Stick)s, roughly 30 photos from the runway are available on Hypebae.

Instagram is experiencing issues right now

If you’re experiencing issues with using Instagram right now, you aren’t alone.

According to reports on Twitter, Reddit and DownDetector, the Meta-owned social media platform is currently experiencing problems.

Downdetector indicates reports surrounding Instagram issues spiked at roughly 1pm ET/10am PT. The issues seem to be across both Instagram’s Android and iOS.

Some reports state that Instagram is entirely crashing, while others are unable to load stories and images/video in their feed. My Instagram feed still seems to be working like normal.

Meta’s other platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp appear to still be working. It’s unclear what the source of the issue is. This story will be updated when Instagram is back online.
