Apple says the latest macOS beta fixes Studio Display built-in webcam issues

Apple says that latest macOS update solves the Studio Display’s webcam problems.

Though I didn’t find the pricey monitor’s built-in webcam that bad, video quality with FaceTime and other apps is often far noisier than it should be. According to The Verge, the latest firmware update to Apple’s Studio Display should solve that issue.

“An update to the Studio Display firmware is now available with today’s beta release of macOS Monterey 12.4. This beta update has refinements to the Studio Display camera tuning, including improved noise reduction, contrast, and framing,” said Apple in a statement to the publication.

According to a recent iFixit teardown, the Studio Display features a camera array roughly on par with the iPhone 11, including a 12-megapixel sensor with an f/2.4 lens and even an A13 chip.

This update is included in the macOS Monterey 12.4 public beta, which should receive a final release in the next few weeks. If you’re already running the public beta, head to ‘System Preferences’ and then the ‘Software update.’ The specific firmware build is listed as ‘Version 15.5 Build 19F5062g.’

For more on Apple’s standalone monitor, check out my in-depth look at the Studio Display and the Mac Studio.

New PlayStation Plus to require certain games to offer free trials: report

One of the new perks that PlayStation is introducing with its upcoming expanded PlayStation Plus service is timed game trials.

While Sony hasn’t yet confirmed any of the titles that will offer these, a new report provides some insight into the types of games that will be included.

Citing developer sources, GameDeveloper reports that PlayStation is requiring games that have a wholesale cost of $34 USD (about $43.61 CAD) or more to offer a time-limited trial. These must be at least two hours long, although games that are under $34 USD will be exempt from this policy.

These requirements are also said to not be retroactive or applicable to upcoming PlayStation VR titles. Instead, developers are starting to be notified of this now and will have up until three months after their games launch to implement a trial. These must remain available to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers (starting at $21.99 CAD/month) for at least 12 months.

PlayStation is also allowing developers to create custom trials instead of time-limited ones, although these will need to be approved on a case-by-case basis.

On the one hand, game trials are, in theory, an option for consumers to play a game without spending as much as $80 or $90. That said, game developers will need to allocate time and resources to create a polished demo, which can be tricky.

The new PlayStation Plus is set to launch on June 13th in Canada and the U.S.

Ford reportedly has plans for another electric pickup truck

Production of the Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck is in full swing at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, but Ford seems to have its attention on a new electric truck.

Announced by Ford CEO Jim Farley earlier today at an event to celebrate the F-150 Lightning’s production, the new truck will be built at Ford’s new BlueOval City manufacturing complex in Stanton, Tennessee.

Not much else was revealed about the new truck.

Ford’s F-150 Lighting has been in development for the last four years and is the follow-up to the Mustang Mach-e revealed in 2019. The truck starts at $58,000 and offers a range of 370km. The more tricked-out ‘XLT’ version starts at $68,000 and can drive 483km per charge.

Sega is delisting Sonic games to push Sonic Origins sales

Sega always finds a way to ruin things.

In what seems like an effort to push would-be sonic buyers to Sonic Origins — an upcoming collection of retro Sonic titles that includes Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD — the company is delisting several standalone ports of the series from platforms like Steam and the Xbox Store.

According to Sega, all of these titles will be removed as of May 20th, so if you’ve previously purchased one and don’t have it installed on your console, hit that download button before it’s too late. The titles will still be available within Sonic Origins on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam, but only as part of the Sonic Mania collection.

There are a few exceptions, however. For example, the Sega Ages ports of Sonic and Sonic 2 will still be available in the Switch eShop, and so will the version of Sonic 2 included in Switch Online’s Expansion Pack.

All other legally downloadable versions of the titles included in Origins will be delisted from stores, though. Sonic Origins will release on June 23rd.

In other Sonic-related news, Sonic Spinball recently made its way to the Switch Online’s Expansion Pack.

Apps on the Play Store to show info on how they collect user data

A new “Data Safety” section in the Google Play Store will now show users safety and privacy information about the app they’re attempting to download.

The feature was first revealed back in May 2021 and is just rolling out after a short delay. At the time, Google had said the feature will roll out in Q1 2022.

According to the new feature’s guidelines, developers of all apps on the Google Play Store have to provide information about how their product collects, shares and uses user data. But that’s not all.

“We heard from users and app developers that displaying the data an app collects, without additional context, is not enough,” reads Google’s blog post about the update. “Users want to know for what purpose their data is being collected and whether the developer is sharing user data with third parties. In addition, users want to understand how app developers are securing user data after an app is downloaded. That’s why we designed the Data safety section to allow developers to clearly mark what data is being collected and for what purpose it’s being used.”

This allows users to see whether an app needs to collect the data to function or whether it’s entirely optional. Additionally, the Data Safety section will also show:

  • Whether the developer is collecting data and for what purpose.
  • Whether the developer is sharing data with third parties.
  • The app’s security practices, like encryption of data in transit and whether users can ask for data to be deleted.
  • Whether a qualifying app has committed to following Google Play’s Families Policy to better protect children in the Play store.
  • Whether the developer has validated their security practices against a global security standard (more specifically, the MASVS – Mobile Application Security Assessment).

Google says that developers have until July 20th to update their app’s Data Safety section.

The new section is rolling out today and will be completely rolled out in the coming weeks.

E-Ink’s new Gallery 3 supports stylus input and features a colour display

After the Kaleido 3, E-Ink has just announced its latest colour ePaper for Readers.

According to the company, its new ePaper called the Gallery 3 will feature a higher colour resolution of 300 pixels per inch (ppi), in contrast to 150ppi on the Kaleido 3. Most importantly, the new display has a faster update time.

The black-and-white update time has been reduced to 350 milliseconds (ms), which means, pages with only black and white colours would update in .35 seconds, while the fast colour mode now takes 500 ms to refresh. The normal colour mode takes 750-1000 ms, and the best colour takes 1500 ms (1.5 seconds) to update.

Gallery 3 also supports pen input at 30 ms for black and white, along with support for “other colours,” though E-Ink didn’t mention which colours.

Additionally, just like the company’s recently released Kaleido 3, Gallery 3  also incorporates ComfortGaze technology. ComfortGaze reduces the blue light reflected off the display by lowering the blue light ratio by 60 percent and the blue light toxicity factor by 24 percent, allowing users to view content on the screen for longer durations without eye discomfort.

“E Ink is very excited to announce this significant breakthrough with E Ink Gallery 3,” said Johnson Lee, CEO of E-Ink.

“For the first time, our Gallery full color ink platform series can be offered for an enhanced reading and shopping experience for eBooks, and for colorful document viewing and editing in eNotes. We have invested over $100 million dollars in R&D resources and budget to improve every aspect of this technology. Our team across the world has worked tirelessly over the past several years, and has made a product we can all be proud of.”

The new Gallery 3 will be on display, along with the Kaleido 3 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, at Touch Taiwan from April 27th to 29th. E-Ink didn’t talk about any future products that might incorporate Gallery 3, though we might learn about them at Touch Taiwan.

Android 13 Beta 1 is now available for Pixel devices

Android 13 Beta 1 is now available.

This beta is available for public testing, and since it follows two Developer Previews, it shouldn’t feature notable bugs that wreck your phone (at least no more than the bugs already in Android 12). However, it won’t be perfect, and this is only the first of four planned betas.

If you want to try Android 13 Beta 1 and have a Pixel 4 to Pixel 6 Pro, you head to the Android Beta Program website. When you tap “opt-in,” you’ll get the option to choose Android 12 Beta or Android 13 Beta. Make sure you tap the Android 13 option, or you might be stuck in the Android 12 Beta for a while.

Following that, you’ll receive an over-the-air software update. It can take up to a few hours, so don’t worry if you don’t see it immediately. After this, following Android 13 builds will just hit your device like normal software updates until Android 13 is finally released.

Android 13 Beta 1 features a new photo picker that lets you choose which of your photos an app can access, new app icon themes and Bluetooth LE audio support. Additionally, there are more permission controls for shared media files and more permissions for notifications.

You can check out more of those Developer Preview 2 features available on Beta 1.

I’m finding this Android 13 Beta 1 pretty stale, but we’ll likely see more interesting top-level changes at Google I/O 2022 on May 11th.
