Toronto-made The Big Con gets ‘Grift of the Year Edition’ on Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC

Toronto-based indie developer Mighty Yell has announced that its acclaimed 2021 ’90s-set adventure game, The Big Con, is getting a special Grift of the Year Edition this summer.

A play on the “Game of the Year Editions” that are often released for games, The Big Con: Grift of the Year Edition adds a new “Rad Ghost mini-game” and bonus quests and collectibles.

The Big Con follows a spunky teenager named Ali as she travels across the U.S. to steal enough money to pay off loan sharks and save her mother’s business. The Skybound Games-published title originally launched on Xbox and PC, and those who own the game on those platforms will receive the Grift of the Year Edition update for free. Meanwhile, Switch owners can experience the updated version of the game by default upon launch.

Notably, The Big Con was one of eight games to be selected in last year’s inaugural Tribeca Games Spotlight, and the only Canadian title of the bunch.

Meta exec accused of pressuring paper to kill reporting about Activision CEO

Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg used her power to bury two stories about then-boyfriend Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard CEO, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Sandberg, who dated Kotick from 2016 to 2019, is accused of pressuring the digital edition of U.K. tabloid The Daily Mail in both 2016 and 2019 to stop reporting on a restraining order filed against him by an ex-girlfriend. The WSJ reports that Kotick had said behind the scenes that Sandberg threatened The Daily Mail, stating that publishing this report could damage the outlet’s relationship with Facebook.

Speaking to The WSJ, Kotick denied that he said this, while Meta told the publication that Sandberg “never threatened the MailOnline’s business relationship with Facebook in order to influence an editorial decision.”

In any event, The Daily Mail story did not run either in 2016 or 2019, and Facebook now says it’s investigating whether Sandberg’s actions violated company policy. In 2012, Sandberg was the first woman to join Facebook’s board, and she’s since become renowned for her advocacy for women’s rights in the workplace. It’s for this reason — so as to not tarnish this reputation — that Sandberg and Kotick reportedly wanted to kill the Daily Mail piece.

It should also be noted that Sandberg’s leadership role at Facebook has put her at the front of major controversies surrounding the platform’s handling of privacy and fake news, especially following the 2016 U.S. Presidental Election.

Kotick, meanwhile, has had the opposite reputation of Sandberg when it comes to women. Last summer, the state of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard, alleging that the company fostered a “frat boy” culture in which employees, particularly women, faced sexual harassment and discrimination.

Months later, The WSJ reported that Kotick not only knew about these incidents but actively worked to cover some of them up. He is even said to have sent a voicemail to an assistant threatening to kill her if she didn’t stay quiet. Many in the gaming industry, including current and former Activision Blizzard employees, have since called for Kotick to step down.

Kotick has denied the specific allegations made against him but claimed he’s committed to staying at the company to improve its work culture. While he’s expected to leave once Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is finalized, a recent report indicates that Microsoft hasn’t actually discussed his future.

It remains to be seen what, if anything, will happen with both Sandberg and Kotick at their respective companies.

Apple’s child safety-focused ‘Communication Safety in Messages’ features are coming to Canada soon

MobileSyrup can confirm that Apple’s child safety-focused ‘Communication Safety in Messages’ iOS features are coming to Canada in its next suite of updates, including iOS 15.2, iPadOS 15.2 and macOS 12.2.

The previously U.S.-exclusive tool scans incoming photos on a child’s device for nudity and other potentially harmful images and flags them.

Once harmful content has been identified, it’s blurred and the child is presented with “helpful resources.” It’s unclear what Canadian organizations Apple has partnered with for these resources.

Apple says the tool also offers protection if a child attempts to send photos that contain nudity, stating that children are “given the option to message someone they trust for help if they choose” after the images have been flagged.

“Messages analyzes image attachments and determines if a photo contains nudity, while maintaining the end-to-end encryption of the messages. The feature is designed so that no indication of the detection of nudity ever leaves the device. Apple does not get access to the messages, and no notifications are sent to the parent or anyone else,” reads Apple’s support page about the feature.

Apple’s support document says the protection features also work with Siri, Search and Spotlight.

It’s important to note that Communication Safety in Messages requires user accounts to be set up as a family in iCloud.

Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack can now charge at 7.5W speeds

Following a recent firmware update, Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack can now charge wirelessly at 7.5W speeds instead of 5W.

According to a recently updated Apple support document (via MacRumors), the firmware update (2.7.b.0) that brings faster charging speeds to the battery pack, dropped earlier this week. To check what firmware update your MagSafe Battery Pack is running, navigate to ‘Settings,’ ‘General’ and then ‘About.’

Similar to Apple’s AirPods, this update can be done by connecting the MagSafe Battery Pack to an iPhone (this process can take up to a week), though it’s also possible to perform the update in just a few minutes using an iPad or a Mac through a Lightning cable.

This is a long-overdue update on Apple’s part given most other MagSafe compatible accessories can charge at 15W. The MagSafe Battery Pack is capable of 15W wireless Qi charging, but strangely, only when it’s plugged into a power source.

Apple’s MagSafe Battery pack costs $119 in the Apple Store.

Federal government invests millions to help Manitoba’s heavy vehicle sector reduce emissions

The federal government wants to help Manitoba’s heavy vehicle and equipment sector go green with a $2.9 million investment.

The funding will go towards the Vehicle Technology Centre (VTC). The non-profit organization works with several leading companies to support technological advancements in the industry. The money is coming from a Prairies Economic Development Canada program.

Companies with the VTC will use the funding for research and development, helping manufacturers to move toward zero-emission propulsion.

Manitoba has a proud history of manufacturing large, on and off-road vehicles and equipment that are exported all over the world. These urban, highway and agricultural products are designed, developed and built right here in our province,” Ron Vanderwees, VTC CEO, said.

“The products and processes developed with this support will help Canada and other countries meet emission targets and maintain Manitoba’s leadership in heavy vehicle and equipment and low volume manufacturing process technology,” he continued.

The recently released federal budget has a couple of notable mentions about the government’s goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. This includes creating the Canada Growth Fund, which in part, will focus on helping businesses reduce their emissions.
