Nintendo Switch Online is getting awful platformer Earthworm Jim 2

Nintendo’s next set of Switch Online titles include NES classics Dig Dug II and Mappy-Land, but also abysmal SNES platformer, Earthworm Jim 2.

Though the 1995 title featuring a worm named Jim was a graphical achievement of the era, it offers wonky hit detection, confusing level design and humour that just doesn’t land in the same way it did 27 years ago (talking cows aren’t funny anymore).

With this in mind, unless you’re looking for a nostalgic blast from the past, Earthworm Jim 2 is not worth your time. There are much better platformers available on Nintendo’s Switch Online service.

In Japan Harvest Moon is coming to Switch Online instead of Earthworm Jim 2, which seems entirely unfair because it’s arguably the best entry in the long-running faring series. All of these new titles will appear automatically in the SNES or NES app on your Switch if you’re already a Switch Online subscriber.

Switch Online includes a collection of several SNES and NES titles like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros., Kirby’s Adventure and more.

All three titles hit the subscription service on March 30th.

In Canada, the following Switch Online membership options are available:

  • One month (single account): $4.99
  • Three months (single account): $9.99
  • Twelve months (single account): $24.99
  • Twelve months family membership (supports eight Nintendo accounts): $44.99

Nintendo offers a more expensive Expansion Pack subscription tier that features Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 titles for $63.99 for a 12-month individual membership.

Ryan Reynolds now the only actor with three Top 10 Netflix movies

Is there anything Ryan Reynolds can’t do?

As first pointed out by The Hollywood Reporter, the Vancouver-born funnyman has become the first actor to have three films on Netflix’s all-time Top 10 English-language movie list.

Reynolds claimed the honour thanks to The Adam Project, which released on March 11th and has, at the time of writing, become the seventh most-watched Netflix film. His other top 10 Netflix films are Rawson Marshall Thurber’s Red Notice (No. 1), co-starring Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot, and Michael Bay’s 6 Underground (No. 9).

Notably, The Adam Project was directed by Montreal’s own Shawn Levy and filmed in Reynolds’ native Vancouver. And speaking of Levy, THR notes that he’s now the first filmmaker to have a title on Netflix’s most-watched TV and film lists, as he’s one of the producers on the streamer’s mega-popular Stranger Things.

On top of that, Levy confirmed to THR that 25 percent of people who watched The Adam Project have since gone back to rewatch it. The film has garnered generally positive reviews for its surprisingly emotional story about a time-traveling pilot (Reynolds) who teams up with his younger self (newcomer Walker Scobell) to save the world.

The film is Reynolds and Levy’s second collaboration following last year’s Free Guy. The pair is currently set to reteam on the third Deadpool film, which is being produced by Marvel Studios.

iFixit’s Studio Display teardown reveals a webcam ‘identical’ to the iPhone 11 front camera

Folks over at iFixit finally got their hands on Apple’s new standalone monitor — the Studio Display. In typical fashion, the team disassembled the monitor to reveal its internals and even compared it to the internally similar-looking iMac.

The teardown starts off with iFixit employees (the ones who have never seen the internals of an iMac or Studio display before) being asked to differentiate between a disassembled iMac and Studio display and determine which one is which. Since the Studio display has a complex internal circuit board, with big fans, speakers and power supplies, a lot of employees failed to identify the machines correctly.

iFixit says the new Studio Display opens up just like an iMac would, and the team used an iMac opening tool’ to pry the Studio Display open. To kick things off, the iFixit team looked into the device’s webcam, which has received mixed reviews, with many saying that the webcam is lacklustre.

According to iFixit, the built-in webcam is “pretty much identical” to the iPhone 11’s 12-megapixel selfie camera, so it’s likely not the hardware’s fault that the built-in webcam is functioning poorly. Apple says it is working on a software fix for the webcam, and you can read more about it here.

Next, the Studio Display has the same display as the 5K iMac with an integrated slim power supply. “It’s a huge amount of engineering effort and cost to design a slim power supply like this,” says an iFixit expert while unscrewing the power supply. The two big internal fans are included to dissipate heat from the slim power supply, according to iFixit.

Unlike the M1 iMac, which has an external power adapter/brick, having the power supply placed internally has caused the Studio Display chassis to be 50 percent thicker than the M1 iMac.

The teardown dives deeper into the device’s speakers, logic board, ports and more. Check the complete teardown video below:

New Lapsus$ data breach compromises 70GB of Globant’s client data

Lapsus$, the anonymous hacker group responsible for the recent Nvidia, Microsoft and Samsung data leaks, has struck again, this time around breaching Globant — an international software development firm with big clients from around the world, as first reported by The Verge.

Information about the breach, which was initially shared in a Telegram group by the anonymous hacker gang, claims that they got access to 70GB of important data, with the screenshot showing folders with leaked information from big names like BNP Paribas Cardif, cable network C-SPAN, DHL, Facebook and a folder named ‘Apple Health App.’

The Apple folder, as reported by The Verge doesn’t contain direct Apple data, and rather, has information about Globant’s BeHealthy app, which was developed in partnership with Apple, and tracks data through the Apple Watch.

Since then, Globant has come out about the data breach. “We have recently detected that a limited section of our company’s code repository has been subject to unauthorized access. We have activated our security protocols and are conducting an exhaustive investigation,” reads Globant’s official update about the issue. “According to our current analysis, the information that was accessed was limited to certain source code and project-related documentation for a very limited number of clients. To date, we have not found any evidence that other areas of our infrastructure systems or those of our clients were affected.”

Since then, Lapsus$ has shared a torrent download link in the Telegram group chat, with the 70GB of data available for group members to download for free.

The latest data breach comes less than a week after the U.K police arrested seven people with direct affiliation to the anonymous hacker group.

Google working Android feature to detect nearby, unfamiliar trackers

Google may be working on an Android feature that would let phones scan for and warn users about nearby, unfamiliar Bluetooth tracker tags.

9to5Google uncovered lines of code in Google’s Play Services app hinting at the capability. Before we dig too much deeper, it’s worth noting that information uncovered via app teardowns like this isn’t always the most reliable, in part because strings of code can be misinterpreted. Moreover, in-development features like this may change, or Google might scrap them entirely.

With that in mind, let’s dig in. 9to5 performed a teardown on Play Services version 22.12.13 and found references for “Unfamiliar device alerts” and an “Unfamiliar Tag Detected Notification.” Both seem connected to Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) tracking tags.

Further, 9to5 found lines referencing three types of tags, including “ATag,” “Finder tag” and “Tile tag.” It’s not totally clear what ‘Finder’ refers to, but ‘Tile’ is likely Tile trackers, while ‘ATag’ could be Apple AirTags.

Finally, another line of code suggests that if an Android phone finds a tag, users might be able to ring it.

After some digging, 9to5 was able to enable the ‘Unfamiliar device alerts’ menu, which appears in Settings > Safety & emergency.

Android’s ‘Safety & emergency’ menu with ‘Unfamiliar device alerts’ | Image credit: 9to5Google

Despite the early development of the feature, I think it may hold some promise. Apple’s AirTags helped popularize Bluetooth trackers, but also opened avenues for people to abuse trackers for stalking and tracking people. Trackers have become a rampant problem, with reports of people attaching them to cars so they can find and steal them later.

Apple built several anti-stalking measures into its Find My app and later rolled out a ‘Tracker Detect’ app for Android users. Meanwhile, Tile just launched a ‘Scan and Secure‘ tool in its app to check for nearby, unfamiliar trackers.

The problem, however, is that both solutions require Android users to download apps and manually scan for trackers. It seems like Google’s solution may solve the first problem by eliminating the need to use a third-party app. However, it’s not clear if Android will passively scan for trackers, or if users will need to manually scan.

Although this feature would go a long way in helping Android users deal with unwanted trackers, it’d be nice tech giants supported an interoperable standard. At the very least, Android and iOS devices should be able to warn users of nearby, unfamiliar trackers. But, an ideal would be if everything ran on the same network, giving users much better coverage and choice in tracker use.

Startup pushes smartphone photography to DSLR levels with tiny cinema lenses

Startup camera company Glass wants to improve smartphone cameras with a new lens technology that could, finally, allow phones to attain DSLR-like image quality.

TechCrunch details the system in-depth — it’s a great read if you’re a real camera nerd — but the short, digestible version is that Glass’ combination of a large sensor, anamorphic lenses, and neural networks makes for surprisingly excellent camera shots.

Anamorphic lenses aren’t new, but we haven’t seen them on smartphone cameras before. Anamorphic optics were pioneered in the 1900s, first to help record World War I and later in cinema, especially in the 1950s after Twentieth Century-Fox bought the rights to the technique to create CinemaScope.

Anamorphic lenses squeezed a wide field of view from the sides to fit on 35mm film. Then, when projected through an anamorphic protector, the process was reversed and viewers would see the desired aspect ratio. Naturally, this added interesting optical side effects, but that’s beside the point.

Example showing anamorphic (top) and symmetric (bottom) lenses | Image credit: Glass

Glass’ system, while not quite the same, relies on similar principles. In short, Glass wanted to add a larger sensor but didn’t just want to make it a bigger square. Instead, they made it rectangular, making the lens and sensor longer. Then, using an anamorphic lens, Glass’ system captures a larger, distorted image and corrects it to the right aspect ratio using the image processor.

Glass claims its prototype sensor is 11 times larger than the iPhone 13 sensor

To give an idea of how much of an improvement this can be, consider the iPhone 13 camera. Its sensor is about 7mm by 5mm, meaning the sensor has a total area of about 35 square millimetres. Glass’ prototype, however, uses a 24mm x 8mm sensor with an area of about 192 square millimetres. That makes the Glass prototype sensor five or six times larger than the iPhone 13 sensor.

But there’s more. As Glass explained to TechCrunch, you need to account for the full aspect ratio, which once processed, would be twice as tall at 24mm x 16mm. That’s about 11 times larger than an iPhone 13 sensor and comes in just shy of the APS-C standard in DSLRs. It’s also well above the Micro Four Thirds and 1-inch sensors common in mirrorless cameras.

The main benefit here is a substantial increase in light captured by the camera. More light leads to better exposures and can improve camera performance in poor conditions, like night photography.

Larger sensors can also help capture more detail in images. Plus, the larger sensor and glass help create a natural bokeh effect without the need to simulate once using software, like the portrait modes available on most modern smartphones.

Improvements, but not without drawbacks

Comparison of iPhone 12 Max (left) and Glass prototype (right) | Image credit: Glass

Of course, as impressive as this all sounds, there are drawbacks to the Glass system. As TechCrunch explains, complexities stem from using a camera that is, optically, totally different from traditional cameras.

Anamorphic lenses also have different mechanisms for autofocus and doing so is complex. Moreover, there are more distortions that need to be corrected for compared to symmetrical lenses (although to be fair, symmetrical lenses also have distortions at smartphone size).

This is where machine learning and neural networks come in. Glass said it’s “straightforward” to train a model to correct for these issues to a point where most people wouldn’t notice them.

Still, for an early prototype, the Glass system is impressive. Unfortunately, don’t expect it to be on your next smartphone. The startup said it’s trying to convince manufacturers to ditch the old tech and adopt the anamorphic system.

Moreover, even if Glass struck an agreement now with a smartphone company, it’d be up to two years before the new camera tech would get to market.

Plus, considering that all we’ve got to go on so far is what Glass has said and shown, it’s worth taking all this with a grain of salt. I’m excited to see what comes of real-world testing if Glass’ system (or other anamorphic cameras) start showing up in phones. But, I won’t hold my breath waiting.
