OnePlus rolling out OxygenOS 12 for OnePlus 8 series soon

OnePlus, a company known for slowly rolling out updates, has finally started to push Android 12 to the OnePlus 8 series from 2020.

The update is currently available for anyone who wants to join the OnePlus open beta, but the company says that the real update should be rolling out to more users soon.

This update is somewhat controversial as it walks back OnePlus’ previously new UI design that arrived with Android 11. If you hated the look of OxygenOS 11, this new Android 12-based update might help you get over it, but it’s unlikely. This version is an English skin of Oppo’s ColorOS, and it’s even less stock Android than the last update.

Since then, OnePlus has announced that it’s walking back its decision to use the ColorOS design and will try to regain some of the simplicity that made OxygenOS unique. That’s slated to come along with Android 13, which might not actually make it to the OnePlus 8 series, given the company’s recent track record with updates.

If you still have a OnePlus One handy, you can win the latest OnePlus 10 Pro

OnePlus is scheduled to launch its latest flagship, the OnePlus 10 Pro, on March 31st, and to celebrate the occasion, OnePlus is giving all OG OnePlus users a chance to win the latest flagship.

The Shenzhen, Guangdong-based company is currently holding a contest that only the original 2014-released OnePlus One buyers can take part in. OnePlus will be selecting 33 people from the contest to win its upcoming OnePlus 10 Pro.

It goes without saying that you still need to have your OnePlus One intact. If not, you’ll need to somehow retrieve its IMEI number. To take part in the contest, you need to verify that you own(ed) the original OnePlus One.

Head to the contest page and click ‘Verify Now.’ You’ll then need to submit the original purchase order number along with your OnePlus One’s IMEI number, and you’ll be enrolled.

According to the contest rules on the website, you can verify your device anytime between March 24th and April 3rd, whereas the prizes will be released on March 31st, the OnePlus 10 Pro release date. Prizes will automatically be added to your OnePlus account.

It’s worth noting that the contest is open only for OnePlus One users from Canada and the United States, though users residing in New York, Florida, and Quebec can’t participate.

Note: OnePlus’ Tweet about the contest states that it will reward 100 users with the OnePlus 10 Pro, whereas the terms and conditions on the contest page suggest that only 33 winners would be selected. Please consider the discrepancy while taking part in the contest.

Tesla Full-Self Driving Beta lands in Canada

After months of statements from Elon Musk saying that the Full-Self Driving (FSD) Beta for Teslas will soon release in Canada, the software update finally dropped on Saturday, March 26th, as reported by teslanorth.

Canadian FSD Beta tester Gary (@akidesir) was able to get his hands on the public release of software version 2022.4.5.20 and FSD beta 10.11.1, and subsequently uploaded a video on his YouTube channel, showing the Beta software in action on the roads of Toronto. Canadians like Gary who have a safety score of 99-100 are some of the few people to get FSD Beta outside the United States.

It’s worth noting that the release doesn’t mean all Tesla users in Canada now have FSD Beta. As mentioned, only those with a safety score of 99 or 100 on the Tesla Safety Score app and those that pay for the add-on will have the update available to download. The current cost for the package in Canada is $10,600.

Spotify adds COVID disclosures to podcast and other content

Spotify is rolling out a COVID advisory tab on podcasts and other content whenever it mentions the coronavirus, according to CNBC. The music streaming app will show a blue tab that will direct users to a COVID-19 page to provide helpful information about the virus.

This comes after Spotify aired an episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” which spread misinformation about COVID-19. After a boycott due to this podcast, Spotify promised that it would add misinformation tags and a COVID information page. Two months later, the feature has finally come to fruition.

Spotify adding this feature is crucial. The streaming music platform bought the exclusive rights to the Joe Rogan podcast in 2020 in a deal worth more than $100 million USD (roughly $127 million CAD).

Following the acquisition, Rogan and Spotify have come under fire several times related to the spread of COVID-19-related misinformation on the show. Earlier this year, more than 270 doctors and other health care experts signed a joint letter condemning Spotify and Rogan for the COVID misinformation shared on the podcast.

OpenSea has a ‘Will Smith Slap’ NFT collection with 721 owners already

March 27th’s 94th Academy Awards are sure to be remembered for a long, long time. Not for all the talent acknowledged, but because of a well-known Hollywood personality losing his temper over a joke that might have gone a little too far.

If you pay heed to what’s going on in the world, you’d know that Will Smith, who won the Best Actor Oscar for King Richard, had a bit of an altercation with standup comedian and actor Chris Rock, who was on stage to present an award. A joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett’s alopecia (an autoimmune disorder that causes severe hair loss) resulted in Smith walking up on stage and slapping Rock. The physical altercation was followed by Smith hurling verbal abuse. He said to Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out yo f****** mouth.”

Well, the internet won’t stop… internet-ing, and the whole incident has ended up becoming an NFT collection on OpenSea, arguably the biggest NFT marketplace.

The collection, which is titled “Will Smith Slap Dao,” has a total of 1,999 ‘JPEGs’ of the incident with different meme text written on the NFTs. 721 people are already ‘proud owners’ of the Slap Dao collection, with the cheapest NFT listed for 0.003 ETH ($12.89 CAD), and the most expensive one listed for 69 ETH ($296,452.79).

There isn’t much information about the collection, though each NFT has either “Team Fake” or “Team Real” written on it. Either way, don’t go all out buying these NFTs. As with all other hype event-driven collections, these JPEGs will soon lose their value, too.

Apple to reduce iPhone SE, AirPod production by the millions: report

Apple is set to scale back iPhone and AirPod production, according to the South Korean publication Nikkei.

Per the outlet, the ongoing Ukraine crisis and rising inflation are the reasons for the cutback. Specifically, Nikkei says Apple will produce 20 percent fewer iPhone SE handsets (roughly two to three million) next quarter, and over 10 million fewer AirPods for the rest of 2022.

It’s worth noting that renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities tweeted that 2022 iPhone SE shipments will fall between 15 and 20 million units, down from 25 to 30 million. According to Kuo, demand for the phone is “lower than expected,” and he pointed to the phone’s ready availability on Apple’s website as “one of the proofs” of this.

Apple launched the newest iPhone SE model earlier this month — for more on the entry-level smartphone, check out our review.

Crunchyroll ends free ad-supported viewing on new and continuing series

Crunchyroll, an anime streaming service now owned by Sony, has removed ad-supported viewing on new and continuing series. Viewers who want to stay up to date with the latest anime will have to upgrade to one of Crunchyroll’s premium plans.

Previously, users didn’t need to have a subscription to watch new episodes of simulcast titles, but Crunchyroll would delay the release of these new episodes by one week, while premium subscribers could watch them an hour after they release in Japan.

You’ll still be able to watch cancelled anime free — with ads, of course.

The anime streaming platform will offer some seasonal samplers for Spring 2022. Users will be able to watch the first three episodes of these simulcast titles for free:

  • Spy x Family
  • A Couple of Cuckoos
  • Dawn of the Witch
  • Tomodachi Game
  • Skeleton Knight in Another World
  • Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie
  • The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody
  • Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs

Three episodes of the above series will be available for free with ad-supporting viewing one week after their Japanese release date until May 31st. After that date, you’ll need to have a subscription to watch new episodes of these series.

It’s unclear if Crunchyroll will always offer seasonal samplers.

In Canada, premium Crunchyroll access starts at $7.99 CAD.

Sony also owns the anime streaming service Funimation. Recently, Crunchyroll announced that it will be taking over Funimation’s anime library, to slowly merge both platforms.

Sasktel will continue to waive Ukraine calling fees until June 30

In the wake of Russia’s ongoing illegal invasion of Ukraine, several Canadian carriers began waiving long-distance calling charges for calls made from Canada to Ukraine back in mid-February.

Saskatchewan-based Sasktel had initially waived charges for long-distance calling from Canada to Ukraine until March 31st. The carrier also waived texting charges, along with roaming charges for calls, texts, and data for customers in Ukraine.

Sasktel today announced that it will continue the initiative until June 30th, 2022.

“As Ukrainians continue to defend their homeland, we here in Saskatchewan remain steadfast in support of their brave fight,” said Don Morgan, Minister responsible for SaskTel. “By continuing to waive fees, SaskTel is doing their part to ensure Ukrainian-Canadian families in our province can connect with their loved ones in Ukraine during this incredibly difficult time.”

This means that Sasktel customers here in Canada can text or call their loved ones in Ukraine for free, whereas roaming charges for calls, texts, and data overages for customers currently in Ukraine have been waived.
