After Toronto and Vancouver, Apple Maps bicycle directions come to Montreal

Apple is rolling out a huge Apple Maps update for the three big Canadian cities – Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Up until now, I’ve been using both Google and Apple Maps, but this update might push me to make the leap to using Apple Maps exclusively, and you might want to too, especially if you’re in one of the three above-mentioned cities.

For starters, Apple added cycling directions to Maps for users in Toronto and Vancouver last year. The feature is now landing in the hands of Montreal bicyclists, providing biking-specific data along with directions.

The bicycle direction feature, which can be set as the default vehicle option, shows you elevations you might have to pedal up along the way, with a toggle to avoid hills and busy roads. Montrealers would also be greeted by suggested stops along the way. Normally, when you’re driving around in a car, suggested stops include places like gas stations, but when you’re riding around on a bicycle, the stops would include places like bicycle repair shops, washrooms, convenience stores and bicycle parking spots. It can show you if you’ll encounter stairs along the way, with recommendations to take or avoid them, depending on the time they’ll save or consume.

Additionally, the bicycle direction feature is integrated with Apple Watch, so you can ride around without having to mount or hold your phone. The bicycle direction feature was originally launched last year at WWDC in select cities and states around the world, including Arizona, Barcelona, Boston, China, Las Vegas, London, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Philadelphia, Toronto, Vancouver, Washington state, and Washington, D.C.

3D view comes to Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal

The three big cities are also now available in a three-dimensional view on Apple Maps, with rich detail and superior navigation, providing an overall more immersive experience. Apple Map’s team has been seen walking and driving around the cities on multiple occasions, with dedicated LiDar data collection equipment. This has allowed Apple to reach a high level of detail in its map layouts, with landmarks, roads, intersections all available in 3D view.

The 3D view is not limited to when you’re driving. You can walk around and receive directions in augmented reality, and according to Apple, the experience will be so accurate that if you see a tree in real life on your way, you can expect it to be shown on the map as well.

“We’re excited for Apple Maps users to explore the beauty and culture of Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver in an incredibly detailed new way,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services in a statement. “Built with privacy at its core, this update is the continuation of our commitment to building the best, most accurate map of the world —with a beautifully designed experience and attention to detail that only Apple can deliver.”

Apple Maps now also provides better navigation, with added details to guide you through crosswalks, busy intersections, turn lanes and more. Maps display a road-level view while approaching interchanges, making it easier to understand traffic conditions or the best lane to exit.

Apple says it wants to expand its 3D maps to more cities around the world, and throughout Canada, though it doesn’t have any plans to do so right now. There is no software update for the new maps, and the improved experience will roll out automatically for users throughout the day. According to an Apple spokesperson, the new maps are available to most new iPhones and iPads, along with the M1 Mac.

Google’s Pixel 7 shows up in CAD-based renders

Google’s next smartphone probably won’t come out until September, but we’re already seeing leaked renders of the Pixel 7. These renders come from CAD-based factory designs, so it’s possible that the device will actually look like this.

LetsGoDigital posted these details, and renders were designed by Parvez Khan, aka Technizo Concept.

Spec-wise, the Pixel 7 Pro is expected to feature a 6.7-inch display, and the smaller Pixel 7 will feature a 6.3-inch OLED screen.

Google will reportedly bring back its visor camera setup. The Pixel 7 is expected to get slightly smaller screen edges than its predecessor; the rear camera setup will be further refined, according to the leak. The black camera visor will be integrated into the frame. The handset will sport a glass back panel and metal frame, a flat display and a 120Hz refresh rate, which is an improvement from the last year’s Pixel 6.

Additionally, all physical buttons are on the right side of the device, which includes a power button and volume keys. The bottom sports a USB Type-C port.

The Pixel 7 will also reportedly feature 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, as well as 12-megapixel ultrawide, 50-megapixel wide-angle, and 8-megapixel f/2.2 lens.

One should take this leak with a grain of salt as it’s possible that the phone won’t end up anything like the renders.

TekSavvy’s second appeal on landmark website-blocking order dismissed

The Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) has dismissed TekSavvy’s second appeal against the first-ever nationwide website-blocking order.

The court’s November 2019 decision ordered all internet service providers (ISPs) in Canada to block GoldTV.

GoldTV was a subscription service run by two unidentified individuals, the recent SCC ruling states. It provided access to thousands of pirated TV channels over the internet in exchange for a fee.

A group of telecom giants, including Bell, Groupe TVA, and Rogers, filed a lawsuit against GoldTV for copyright infringement. The court ruled in favour of these carriers in November 2019.

This is the second time TekSavvy filed an appeal on the matter. The first was filed in November 2019, soon after the court made its decision. TekSavvy argued the court’s decision infringed freedom of expression and misapplied the Copyright Act. The SCC denied the appeal in May 2021.

TekSavvy filed the second appeal in August 2021.

In a recent blog post on TekSavvy’s website, Andy Kaplan-Myrth, vice-president of regulatory and carrier affairs, says the company isn’t defending piracy, but its role as an internet carrier.

“If there’s a need to use ISPs to enforce copyright, that’s a policy framework the government should lay out, not a court,” Kaplan-Myrth said in a post-dated March 23rd, one day before the SCC released its decision.

“There should be court oversight of it, but it needs a policy framework and the courts are not the place to develop that sort of thing,” he said.

Samsung will reportedly expand foldable line with third device this summer

This summer Samsung will likely have another Unpacked event unveiling its new foldable lineup. We’re expecting to see the successors to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and Galaxy Z Fold 3, but this August might have another surprise in store. Leaks indicate there’s a new foldable on the horizon.

The news comes from Galaxy Club, which confirmed the third device on the way. Galaxy Club found three new codenames, B4, Q4 and N4. We know that B4 is the Z Flip 4, and Q4 is the Z Fold 4, so what’s left is this mysterious N4.

At CES 2022, Samsung unveiled some of the flexible displays it’s working on, including a ‘Flex S’ tri-folding phone that can fold both in and out of an S form. This allows a smartphone to fold into a large tablet. The Flex G, on the other hand, is more compact, but is also a tri-folding and folds inwards so that no part of the display is visible when fully folded.

Additionally, on Samsung’s OLED website, the company showcases other foldable glass displays it’s working on. The South Korean company’s site shows the Flex Square which is the Z Fold 3 foldable display method, the Flex Bar, which is the Z Flip 3’s style of folding. There’s also a Flex Note, which looks like a foldable tablet.

Samsung is also working on other flexible displays as well, such as rollable screens and slideable panels.

Leaker Ice Universe, on the other hand, confirmed that the Fold 4 and the Flip 4 will feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus processor. This chipset hasn’t been announced yet, which means that these handsets will be even more powerful than the smartphones currently on the market.

If Samsung releases a third foldable this summer it’s likely that it will also sport a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus processor, but that’s pure speculation.

However, like all leaks, one should take this with a grain of salt until Samsung officially reveals its new foldable lineup.

Apple possibly planning 15-inch MacBook Air, larger entry-level iPad for 2023

Apple may release a larger 15-inch MacBook Air next year alongside an entry-level iPad with a bigger display, according to a report.

The news comes from Display Supply Chain Consultants’ (DSCC) ‘Quarterly Advanced IT Display Shipment and Technology‘ report. Although the report is only available to members of the display industry, a DSCC analyst shared Apple-specific tidbits with 9to5Mac.

Specifically, DSCC supply chain information points to Apple planning a new MacBook Air variant for 2021 with a screen size of around 15-inches. Additionally, the DSCC report notes that Apple plans to bump up the current MacBook Air display size from 13.3 inches to something “slightly larger” but still between 13- and 14-inches.

As an interesting aside, 9to5 notes that internal Apple emails revealed during the Epic v. Apple lawsuit suggested Apple planned to release a 15-inch MacBook Air back in 2008 but opted to launch an 11-inch model instead.

The DSCC report also mentioned Apple may plan to launch a slightly bigger entry-level iPad next year. The current iPad sports a 10.2-inch display — it’s unclear how much bigger the new variant would be.

I also wonder if that means we’ll see a refreshed design for the entry-level iPad. It’s sported the same dated look for years and while that likely helped keep the cost low, I’d love to see a refreshed, modern design that better matches what’s available from Apple’s other iPad offerings. If the company already plans to alter the display size, I think it’d make sense to make other changes, too.

Of course, both the iPad and MacBook Air changes are speculation based on the DSCC report, so take the information with a grain of salt. That said, people seem to like the idea of a larger MacBook Air, and with Apple doing a better job of listening to customers, maybe that will actually happen.

You can now search your Twitter DMs for keywords

Twitter is making it easier for users to search for specific messages in their inboxes.

The social media giant announced users can now use the search bar in their inbox to search for messages using specific keywords and names.

Searching using a specific name or keyword brings up people, groups, and direct messages that match the search.

The feature is available on iOS, Android, and the web.

A comment on Twitter’s support page indicates web users who can’t use the feature at this time will be able to soon as the feature continues to roll out.

Canada, Newfoundland governments invest millions to connect Labrador households

The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador are investing $22 million to bring high-speed internet to rural communities in Labrador.

Project funding is allocated to the Nunatsiavut Government to benefit 1,000 households in the communities of Rigolet, Postville, MakkovikNainHopedale and Natuashish. Bell is building the network.

“Secure internet connection has been a barrier in many aspects of life for those living in the five Inuit communities of Nunatsiavut,” Anthony Andersen, Minister of Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology for the Nunatsiavut Government, said.

“This initiative will be a step towards bridging those gaps and ensuring that Labrador Inuit have adequate access to opportunities for employment, health care and online learning.”

The two governments previously announced a $136 million investment in February. The project will bring high-speed internet to multiple communities, including Red Bay, Cape Broyle, and Humber Valley.

The announcements are part of the Government of Canada’s plan to connect 98 percent of Canadians with high-speed internet by 2026.

OnePlus 10 Pro to launch in Canada on March 31st

OnePlus is finally bringing its 2022 flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 10 Pro 5G, to North America on the very last day of March.

If you’re considering buying this phone, there is already a plethora of coverage online, but it’s packing a new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, three Hasselblad branded cameras and a large 6.7-inch adaptive 120Hz display.

There’s no North American price yet; we’ll need to wait until the pre-orders go live on the 31st to get specifics. However, it costs 4699 Yuan in China, which is roughly $926 CAD. Last year the OnePlus 9 Pro was priced at $1,169 in Canada, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the new phone was priced somewhere between that old price and the converted Chinese price.

The phone is going to be available after the OnePlus launch event on March 31st at 10:00 AM ET.

The phone is likely to be exciting, but OnePlus has been spiralling over the past year and a half as it merged with Oppo publically and fumbled the rollout of Android 12. The company is working to remedy this, but the OnePlus 10 Pro’s North American release is likely going to determine a lot about the press and the public’s attitude towards the company for the next year or more.

Stay tuned for our full review of the phone coming soon.
