Google kicks off ‘User Choice Billing’ pilot with Spotify partnership

Google announced plans to pilot ‘User Choice Billing’ in select countries with a “small number of participating developers,” chief among them being Spotify. The new billing option will let developers offer customers another way to pay alongside Google’s payment system, which takes a cut of developers’ revenue.

The search giant detailed the new User Choice Billing system in a blog post on the Android Developers Blog. Interestingly, Google notes that the announcement builds on its “recent launch” in South Korea, although as Android Police reports, the policy change stems directly from a South Korean law mandating app stores must accept third-party payments.

Plus, with other countries targeting Google over app store billing processes, it makes a lot of sense that Google would want to expand the system to garner some goodwill with regulators.

Google will still charge developers that use third-party billing

However, Google’s new User Choice Billing system doesn’t get rid of revenue share fees entirely. Through Google’s payment system, developers are on the hook to pay 10 to 30 percent of revenue to Google based on factors like business model and product sold. (the search giant stresses that 99 percent of developers qualify for a fee of 15 percent or less).

As for the new User Choice Billing system, Google explains that it will reduce whatever service fee a developer would have paid by four percent when customers choose to use an alternate billing system.

As per Google, “for example, for the vast majority of developers who pay 15% for transactions through Google Play’s billing system, their service fee for transactions through the alternate billing system would be 11%.”

It remains to be seen how this will impact developers that want to use alternate billing, but I suspect it may dissuade some. Developers who want to use their own billing system will want to make sure the cost of doing so isn’t greater than the four percent they’re saving by using it. At the same time, third-party billing services will need to charge fees of less than four percent to make it worthwhile for developers.

As a reminder, a 2021 report cited internal Google documents that said the company could break even with a roughly six percent fee on the Play Store. Google, however, continues to push the angle that the Play service fees fund managing the Play Store, security, developer tools, app distribution and more.

Spotify among the first to offer a choice of payments

Music streaming giant Spotify will be among the first to offer User Choice Billing. The streamer announced a multiyear partnership with Google that will allow users who downloaded Spotify from the Play Store to pick between Spotify’s payment system or Google’s.

Per Spotify:

“Over the coming months, Spotify will work with Google’s product and engineering teams to build this new experience, and we’ll roll out in countries around the world. Working together, the companies will test and learn, jointly exploring product innovations across the Android platform. We anticipate launching the first iteration of User Choice Billing later this year.”

It sounds like Spotify is on board with Google’s User Choice Billing system, despite that it continues to charge fees. Spotify has long advocated against Google (and Apple) charging app store fees, so this change is likely a win. Just, maybe not as big a win as some had hoped.

Regardless, I’m interested to see how User Choice Billing progresses.

Zoom adds memoji-like avatars to ‘inject fun’ to meetings

As the pandemic and the restrictions around it are starting to ease, video conferencing apps are slowly starting to become irrelevant again. To continue gaining new users, which hasn’t been happening for a lot of video conferencing apps as offices and schools go back to in-person scheduling, Zoom has been churning out new features constantly, including in-app game support and AR effects.

Today, the San Jose, California-based company announced that it is adding avatars to its platform. Basically, it’s like Apple’s memoji, but instead of the AR effect being limited to your face, Zoom avatars give you new clothing as well. The feature is currently limited to 22 variations of cat, dog, cow, fox, and rabbit avatars with different coloured clothing (more avatars to come later), and works only with Zoom version 5.10.0 or higher on iOS, Mac and Windows.

According to Zoom, the addition of avatars will lighten the mood of your meetings and webinars ‘inject fun’ into them. “They also provide a good middle ground for users who don’t want to appear on camera, but still want to express body language and facial expressions,” reads Zoom’s blog post about the feature.

To enable the feature for your next Zoom meeting, make sure you’re running the latest version of the application and click on the ^ button next to the Start / Stop Video button, as seen in the screenshot below, and head to “Choose Virtual Background.” Navigate to “Avatars,” and select which animal you want to be seen as.

It’s worth noting that you can’t use video filters with Avatars, though virtual backgrounds work perfectly. Learn more about the new feature here.

Study suggests skin tone determines how accurately smartwatches monitor heart data

A new University of Toronto research suggests that people with dark skin colours might have been getting wrong heart rate readings from their wearables all along.

According to the UofT study, the light you see on the rear of wearables is the culprit. Traditional wearables measure your heart rate by beaming light through your wrist and observing how much of it is absorbed. A high rate of absorption signals high blood flow, and vice versa.

The reasoning behind this procedure not functioning optimally for people with darker skins is because of the presence of melanin in higher quantities.

Melanin is a naturally occurring chemical in the body, and it is responsible for determining your skin and hair colour. Coincidentally, Melanin is also a very effective absorbent of light, and that’s how it messes up the wearable’s heart readings.

“People need to be aware that there are some limitations for people with darker skin tones when using these devices, and the results should be taken with a grain of salt,” said Dr. Daniel Koerber, the research co-lead author, in a statement. “Algorithms are often developed in homogeneous white populations, which may lead to results that are not as generalizable as we would like. Ongoing research and development of these devices should emphasize the inclusion of populations of all skin tones so that the developed algorithms can best accommodate for variations in innate skin light absorption.”

This data comes from over 622 other published studies and four of which found that heart rate readings were “significantly less accurate” in dark skin individuals when compared to their light skin counterparts.

According to Koerber, algorithms for tracking heart rate in wearables are generally “developed in homogeneous white populations,” which also contributes to the inaccuracies when said wearables are used by those with dark skin.

The findings of the study will be presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session in April. Learn more about the study here.

Snap acquires Paris-based neuro-tech startup to further its AR/VR tech

Snapchat announced earlier today that it has acquired NextMind, a French neuro-tech startup that produces headbands to monitor neural activity. NextMind’s headbands allow the wearer to control aspects of a computer, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) wearables and headsets just by thinking about the action.

The deal, which is sure to help Snap further develop its AR/VR products and the company’s spectacles, was completed for an undisclosed sum of money. “NextMind has joined Snap to help drive long-term augmented reality research efforts within Snap Lab. The team will continue to operate out of Paris,” reads Snap’s blog post.

Snap also clarified in its blog that NextMind’s tech is not invasive, as it does not read thoughts or send any signals towards the brain and instead allows the wearer to ‘push a virtual button’ by focusing on it. According to The Verge, NextMind’s $400 headband developer kit will now be discontinued, considering its Snap’s property now.

It seems like Snap is persistent about making AR/VR tech the next big thing. It acquired WaveOptics, an AR display-maker, in May last year, followed by the acquisition of Compound Photonics in January 2021. However, Snap isn’t the only company diving deep into neural and AR/VR tech. Apple has long been rumoured to release an AR/VR headset, whereas Meta acquired neural interface startup CTRL-Labs back in 2019.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink has been making solid progress and is moving towards human testing, while Valve is exploring brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) for gaming along with OpenBCI.

After five years, Instagram re-introduces chronological feeds

Back in January, we reported how Meta-owned Instagram was testing bringing back chronological feeds, a layout that it phased out more than five years ago. Yesterday, the Menlo Park, CA-based company announced that it has brought back the layout in favour of an algorithmically assembled feed.

Instagram first talked about bringing back the layout back in December, and almost four months in, the company is rolling out the feature globally. “We want you to be able to shape Instagram into the best possible experience, and giving you ways to quickly see what you’re most interested in is an important step in that direction,” reads the company’s blog post about the new feeds.

This doesn’t mean that the regular home feed has been completely phased out. Once the update has been rolled out for you, you’ll see a new dropdown next to the Instagram logo on the top left of the app (as seen in the screenshot below). From here, you can switch between three types of feeds, namely, “Following,” Favourites” and your regular home feed.

The ‘Following’ feed would show you what others have shared in a reverse chronological order, which means, you’ll see the most recently uploaded content first, the second most recently uploaded content second and so on. The feed will show content from everyone you’re following.

The “Favourites” feed works similarly to the “Following” feed, with the only difference being that it will show you what people you have ‘favourited’ are sharing. You can add 50 accounts to your favourite list, according to the photo-sharing platform, and the people/accounts you add to the list won’t be notified about it.

The re-introduction of chronological feeds is sure to please the OG Instagram users, while how new users who’ve never experienced Instagram this way react is yet to be gauged.

The feature hasn’t rolled out for any of us at MobileSyrup.

Spotify to integrate Greenroom’s live social audio into its main app

Spotify’s Clubhouse rival, Greenroom, could feature one significant upgrade over its competitors. According to Bloomberg, Spotify will integrate Greenroom into its base app and rename the service to be more accessible for users.

The live social audio app will be renamed Spotify Live and will be available on the main Spotify app. Content creators can still organize conversations, which subscribers will be able to listen in on.

While Bloomberg’s source is unnamed, evidence of the change was spotted in the code for the beta version of Spotify’s iPhone app.

Spotify’s Greenroom integration will reportedly take place in the second quarter of the year.

The Swedish audio and media company isn’t the only one to copy Clubhouse’s social audio functionality. Twitter launched Twitter Spaces, Meta has Live Audio Rooms via Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, and Discord also have a similar feature. Clubhouse reached more than 10 million users within a year of its launch.

However, the social audio buzz has seemed to die down and has caused platforms like Spotify’s Greenroom to struggle, according to Bloomberg.

Samsung’s Galaxy A12 was reportedly the world’s best-selling smartphone

Samsung’s Galaxy A12 was reportedly the world’s best-selling smartphone in 2021, according to research firm Omdia. The small-budget phone sold 51.8 million units last year, at a price of $160 USD (roughly $200 CAD).

It’s worth noting that the numbers don’t really account for Canada as the Galaxy A12 isn’t available here yet. According to the Canadian Samsung Store, the phone is “coming soon” to Canada, which is strange considering the device is a year old at this point. That said, the A12 is available at third-party retailers and on Amazon Canada for $249.

Samsung’s only other device that made it to the top 10 best-sold phones was the Galaxy A02; another phone not officially available in Canada. The Redmi 9A is the most affordable device costing about $78 USD (roughly $98), another Android device that’s not available in Canada.

The other seven slots are filled by iPhones, with the iPhone 12 at the top of the list, which sold 41.7 million units. Other iPhones on the list include the iPhone 13, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro.

As fewer Android devices sell in Canada, more Canadians are buying iPhones. The only three Android devices on the list are not sold in Canada, which is an indicator of what Canadians are buying. However, if this were a Canadian-focused list, Apple’s iPhone would likely hold several top slots.
