Marvel developing Disney+ reboot of Netflix’s Daredevil: report

Marvel Studios is seemingly working on a reboot of Netflix’s Daredevil series for Disney+.

In the latest issue of Production Weekly, a prominent publication offering production data on upcoming film and TV shows, a Disney+ project called ‘Daredevil Reboot’ is listed. This aligns with rumours from credible Marvel tipsters that Daredevil reboot may begin filming as soon as late 2022. And in case there was any doubt as to whether this was the same Daredevil, it’s also got Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is listed as producer.

Marvel’s Daredevil originally premiered in 2015 on Netflix and ran for three critically-acclaimed seasons. Charlie Cox portrayed Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen who also fought crime as the superhuman Daredevil. However, Netflix cancelled the series in 2018 amid purported conflicts with Marvel parent Disney, which was, at the time, preparing to pull its conflict from the streamer for its own service, Disney+.

The rights to Daredevil, as well as all of the other related “Defenders” Netflix shows, have since reverted to Disney, leading them all to stream on Disney+ as of March 16th.

Over the past few years, a popular ‘#SaveDaredevil’ campaign has sprung up, with hundreds of thousands signing a petition and campaigning online for Marvel to revive the series. It’s important to note that Daredevil and the other shows were produced by Marvel Television, which operated independently from Feige’s Marvel Studios, the company behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Therefore, there was always uncertainty whether Marvel Studios would be interested in reviving any of these shows.

However, fans’ hopes were renewed last year when Cox reprised the role of Matt Murdock in a cameo in December’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. That same month, Vincent D’Onofrio, who played the villainous Kingpin on Daredevil, returned as the crime boss in multiple episodes of Hawkeye on Disney+. While Cox and D’Onofrio have remained coy about potential returns, fans naturally hoped for more.

While it’s unclear exactly how much of the continuity from the original Netflix series may carry over, a Daredevil reboot nonetheless makes a lot of sense, given the character’s popularity. The major concern people brought up beforehand was that the show’s more adult-oriented content wouldn’t fit on Disney+, but clearly, that wasn’t an issue for Disney, which has introduced parental controls on the platform in the U.S. for that reason. (Canadian Disney+ parental controls have been available since last year when Star launched with a large catalogue of mature programming.)

It’s worth noting that credible tipsters have suggested Cox will return in this year’s She-Hulk, starring Canada’s own Tatiana Maslany, given that the titular character and Daredevil are both prominent lawyers in the Marvel universe. Additionally, the upcoming Disney+ series Echo, a spin-off of Hawkeye starring Alaqua Cox’s Maya, is connected to Daredevil in both lore and writing staff. With respect to the former, Kingpin is Maya’s adoptive father, which further fuels speculation that D’Onofrio — and, perhaps, Cox — will return for that show, as well.

Whatever happens, though, Feige has confirmed that Cox will play Daredevil in any potential Marvel projects, which is no doubt reassuring for fans.

iRobot brings Siri support to its robot vacuums, updates j7 with new features

Following bringing smart mapping technology to its mid-range Roomba i3, iRobot is launching Siri support for its various robot vacuums as part of its 4.0 Genius Home Intelligence update.

Other new app features include ‘Room-Specific Cleaning Preferences’ like multiple passes over tough-to-clean areas, ‘Child & Pet Lock’ and the ability to set ‘Do Not Disturb’ time frames when you don’t want your robot vacuum to run. I’m interested in testing out the new cleaning preferences because in my basement, for example, I often run my i7 Roomba several times to clean up the unfortunately ample cat litter in the area.

Further, iRobot’s recently released j7 is now able to identify and avoid clothing and towels. In my experience, the j7 is already more than capable of avoiding objects on my floor thanks to its built-in camera, though the ability to directly identify specific objects should improve this feature.

On the other hand, Siri integration is tied to Apple’s Shortcuts and allows you to set custom phrases to get your supports Roomba cleaning. Unlike Alexa and Google Assistant integration, voice commands to clean individual rooms are not supported.

The robot maker has also slashed the price of its Roomba i3 Evo to $449 and $699 for the Roomba i3+ EVO. The Genius 4.0 update is rolling out globally now until the end of June 2022, though Do Not Disturb and Smart Mapping with the Roomba i3 and i3+ are available now.

Apple might be working on an AirTag-like health monitoring device

A new Apple patent might offers clues regarding what the Cupertino, California-based company has up its sleeve.

According to PatentlyApple, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a new patent (20220079521) that refers to an AirTag-like wearable device that communicates with other wearables to monitor the wearer’s health.

According to the report, the wearable(s) can be placed over different parts of the user’s body or clothes to monitor health functions like posture, heart rate, fall detection, steps, Sp02 and more.

The PatentlyApple report also suggests that a separate ‘electronic device’ will be used to configure, control and receive data from the wearable. In theory, the wearables would communicate with each other and send reports to this ‘electronic device,’ which, in my opinion, sounds like a regular iPhone. The data/reports would likely be available on the Apple Health app.

“The user may selectively change or update the health-related function that the wearable tags are used for by selecting a different function on a display in the electronic device and/or by placing the wearable tag on a different location on the user’s body,” reads the report.

As always take the information in this patent with a grain of salt. Apple files several such patents many of which never come to fruition, like this 2019 patent that suggested that an in-display fingerprint sensor could be coming to the iPhone, or this patent for a possible foldable iPhone design.

That said, this doesn’t mean that such a product isn’t in development. Apple has steadily been expanding its range of health-related features and products, and an AirTag-like monitoring device could make sense as a next step.

Amazon now officially owns MGM following closure of $8.5 billion deal

Amazon has confirmed that its $8.5 billion USD (about $10.7 billion CAD) acquisition of MGM is complete.

This means that it officially owns the historic Hollywood studio, whose properties include the James Bond and Rocky film franchises and Shark Tank and The Handmaid’s Tale TV series. The deal was first announced last May, meaning it took just under one year to pass the necessary regulatory approvals.

Amazon aims to use MGM’s extensive catalogue of more than 4,000 films and 17,000 TV episodes to bolster its Prime Video service. However, it’s unclear exactly what it looks to do with these properties, particularly Bond, which is set to enter a new era following the end of Daniel Craig’s tenure as the British superspy in last year’s No Time to Die.

5G smartphones hit a milestone in January, thanks to Apple

5G smartphones accounted for more than half of all phone sales for the first time in January, and Apple played a significant role in achieving the milestone.

According to data collected by research firm Counterpoint, sales in China, North America and Western Europe allowed 5G smartphones to represent 51 percent of all sales.

Apple represented 37 percent of the 5G sales in January. Samsung represented 12 percent, Xiaomi and Vivo had 11 percent each, and Oppo 10 percent.

The report notes North America and Western Europe saw a “natural increase in the sales penetration of 5G smartphones” after Apple shifted to 5G through the iPhone 12 series in October 2020.

These regions will continue to grow 5G smartphone sales given the demand of iOS users wanting to upgrade to 5G and iPhone users looking to upgrade their devices in general. The average replacement cycle for iPhones is four years, the report notes.

Apple launched a new iPhone series running on 5G earlier this month. The iPhone SE series features a powerful chip packaged in an iPhone 8 like design. It’s priced at $579, relatively lower than the company’s past new phone releases, making it easier for people to enter the 5G market. A full review of the iPhone SE is available here.

Launch of smart home standard Matter delayed until fall 2022

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has delayed the upcoming Matter smart home standard once again.

Matter, formerly Project Connected Home over IP (CHIP) was expected to launch this summer. However, the CSA confirmed to The Verge that it’s pushing back the launch to fall.

The delay will give the CSA time to finalize the software development kit (SDK) that manufacturers can use to incorporate products into the Matter ecosystem. Matter, for those who haven’t followed the project, is meant to help unite the various smart home devices and ecosystems so that everything works together.

It’s worth noting this isn’t the first delay for Matter. Back when it was called CHIP, the platform was intended to launch in 2021. Following the rebrand, Matter got pushed back to mid-2022.

The CSA says that it will have the SDK completed in Q2 and will make a version of the specification available to members in June. With the new timeline, we could see Matter-certified products this year, but likely not as many as originally planned.

Moreover, the CSA attributed the delay to a larger-than-expected number of platforms adopting Matter. Specifically, the alliance told The Verge it had expected four or five platforms, but the number has swelled to more than 16. With more platforms, the CSA needs to do more to make sure the code supports everything as well as give more time for companies to test products.

While certainly a bummer, hopefully, the delay will help ensure a smooth launch for Matter when it finally arrives in the fall.

According to DigiTimes, Apple has readied up 5 million iPhone SE (2022) units for the first quarter, though the Cupertino, California-based company expects the second-quarter sales of the new iPhone to climb up to around 11 million, and about the same for the third quarter as well.

China, which according to the report is the leading consumer of 5G devices is expected to drive up the sales of the iPhone SE (2022), along with increasing demand from the global market which is also expected to bolster sales.

“In 2021, a total of about 280 million 5G mobile phones will be shipped to non-mainland China markets. This figure is expected to surge by more than 60 percent to 450 million units, accounting for 63.5 precent of global shipments,” according to Digitimes.

BMW to unveil its fully electric i7 sedan at Auto China on April 20th

Munich, Germany-based luxury carmaker BMW plans to unveil its fully electric i7 sedan sometime next month. The company confirmed in its very lengthy (353 page) 2021 financial report that the fully electric vehicle will launch later in April 2022.

“All of us at BMW are looking forward to the market launch of the new BMW 7 Series this year: progressive, digital, and innovative, it is also the only luxury sedan to offer customers a choice of drivetrain variants,” reads the report (via motor1). “By the way, the most powerful variant — the BMW i7 — is fully electric. In April we will present it in New York, Munich, and Beijing, representing the major regions of the world.”

The company later confirmed via its Twitter that the all-new car will be revealed at Auto China in Beijing on 20 April, alongside the company’s BMW 7 Series.

The main talking point about the upcoming vehicle, like most other BMW vehicles is its huge kidney grille. While a grille normally serves as an outlet for hot air from the engine to move out, the i7 doesn’t necessarily need it, considering that it will be fully electric. According to The Verge, the grille on the i7 is outlined in a narrow band of “exclusive crystal glass” LED, which makes it stand out. And while it is unnecessary, the vehicle would lose its ‘BMW’ appeal if the company got rid of the grille.

According to the European WLTP standard, the electric vehicle will have a range of about 580-610 km per charge, though we aren’t sure about the battery size.

Inside the vehicle, the car sports a large ‘BMW Curved Display’ that extends halfway across the dashboard, merging the infotainment screen along with the speedometer. Ambient lighting strips run through the car including doors along with a 31-inch 8K theatre screen that goes in and out of the roof liner, providing a source of entertainment for passengers in the rear.

Learn more about the upcoming electric sedan here.
