Google’s May 11th and 12th I/O will be free to view online

Google released a Puzzle earlier today, solving which would reveal the date to Google’s upcoming I/O event. Just four hours into it, and it seems like Google CEO Sundar Pichai has waited enough.

Pichai announced the conference via his Twitter account, and it’s scheduled for May 11th and 12th at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California.

While we aren’t exactly sure if the event will be in-person or virtual like last year, the Tweet’s wording suggests that the conference will most likely be online, with a few Google partners and employees making up the crowd.

Heading to the I/O website currently shows a countdown to the event, which will be absolutely free to attend globally.

At last year’s I/O conference, Google revealed Android’s Material You design, launched the first Android 12 Beta, announced new features to better capture photos of people of colour, revealed that it is working with Samsung on Wear OS and a few privacy updates.

We aren’t sure what Google has up its sleeve for 2022, but a likely contender is Android 13, which had its first developer preview released last month.

Tesla fires employee after he uploads video showing flaws in Full-Self Driving Beta

A Tesla employee has been fired after they uploaded a video on YouTube that showed the company’s Full-Self Driving (FSD) software in action, as reported by CNBC.

John Bernal, now a former Tesla employee, owns and operates the AI Addict YouTube channel, with his oldest FSD video dating back to February 10th, 2021.

According to CNBC, Bernal says that he had been verbally warned by his managers about his videos in the past, and that he was breaking Tesla’s policies and his YouTube channel was a major conflict of interest.

“Tesla relies on the common sense and good judgment of its employees to engage in responsible social media activity,” reads Tesla’s employee social media policy, while not mentioning anything about employees being critical about the company’s products.

One of Bernal’s older video, titled ‘[FSD Beta 8.2] Oakland – Close Calls, Pedestrians, Bicycles!,’ uploaded on March 15th, 2021 shows, as the title suggest, close calls with pedestrians and bicycles. After the video gained traction (It has 261k views), “A manager from my Autopilot team tried to dissuade me from posting any negative or critical content in the future that involved FSD Beta. They held a video conference with me but never put anything in writing,” said Bernal in a statement given to CNBC.

The video he got in trouble for however is this one, which shows his Tesla being unable to detect a green bollard, and banging into one.

Since then, Bernal has been fired from his job. He says that his separation notice does not include the reason for him being laid off, but that he still wishes to continue posting independent research and reviews of the software. Bernal would now have to go the extra mile and borrow a friend’s Tesla since his access to beta software was revoked when he was fired.

“I still care about Tesla, vehicle safety and finding and fixing bugs,” said Bernal in his statement to CNBC.

Here’s how you can unlock your iPhone with Face ID while wearing a mask

Apple dropped iOS 15.4 on Monday, March 14th and with the update came new emojis, an additional voice option for Siri and minor bug fixes, though frontrunning the release is the long-requested support for ‘Face ID with a mask.’

While Apple released a temporary fix for using Face ID while wearing a mask with iOS 14.5, it required you to own and wear an Apple Watch. Now, however, your iPhone will scan and analyze unique features and characteristics around your eyes to identify you.

Fret not those who wear eyeglasses, the feature works for us too, so no more pulling the mask down for a split second or typing in your passcode!

It’s worth noting that, unfortunately, the new mask-enabled Face ID doesn’t work on all Apple iPhones, even if your device is running iOS 15.4. The feature is limited to iPhone 12 and newer models, which means the new iPhone SE (2022), which ships with iOS 15.4, can’t unlock your phone just by looking at you if you’re wearing a mask.

To set up the new feature, you’ll first have to update your phone to iOS 15.4. Upon rebooting, your device should automatically prompt you about the new feature, and to set it up. If for any reason it doesn’t, head to settings, navigate to ‘Face ID and Passcode,’ and scroll down to ‘Face ID  with a Mask,’ as seen in the image referenced below:

Your device will now scan your face, more so your eyes, so make sure you’re not wearing sunglasses or eyeglasses. The procedure works similarly to standard Face ID setup where you’ll have to rotate your face in a circular motion. The process is swift and doest take more than five seconds. For those who wear glasses, you’ll have to go through an additional scan. Right below the ‘Face ID with a Mask’ toggle, you’ll now see an ‘Add Glasses’ option, as seen in the screenshots below:

In my personal experience, the feature doesn’t work, unfortunately, but other members of the MobileSyrup team have been more successful. I’ve tried setting up the new feature four times since yesterday, in multiple different lighting conditions, with eyeglasses, without eyeglasses, while wearing a cap and without one. I’ve tried rebooting my device and then setting up the new feature with no success.

Apple’s support page for the new feature mentions “To use Face ID with a mask, Face ID must clearly see your eyes and the areas around the eyes.” I tried it with my eyes wide open, and I’ve tried it with a resting face, and nothing works. Normal Face ID without a mask still works perfectly, with or without eyeglasses. Further, for what it’s worth, I’ve tried different coloured masks too to no avail. For reference, I use an iPhone 12 Pro.

On the other hand, my housemate, who uses the latest iPhone 13 Pro is able to unlock his phone while wearing a mask without a delay or without having to alter the angle of the phone. I don’t think it has anything to do with a one-generation newer iPhone, but at the same time, I also can’t rule the possibility out.

Microsoft is testing banner ads for File Explorer in Windows 11

Microsoft says that ads appearing in Windows 11’s File Explorer were a mistake and “not intended to be published externally” after a Windows Insider tweeted about them.

Insider MVP Florian Beaubois shared a picture of a banner ad in File Explorer on Twitter, noting — aptly — that “people will go mad” if Microsoft adds ads to File Explorer.

In a statement to The Verge, senior program manager for Windows Brandon LeBlanc explained the ad was “an experimental banner that was not intended to be published externally and was turned off.”

Unfortunately, saying “we didn’t mean for this to happen” doesn’t mean Microsoft will never put ads in File Explorer. Plus, it’s clear now that Microsoft can run ads in File Explorer if it wanted to.

Which, it does. The company has a track record of putting ads into Windows, although typically for its own services (an ad is an ad, however). The Verge points out that Microsoft experimented with a banner ad in the Windows 10 File Explorer for promoting OneDrive back in 2017.

The company also put ads into the Windows 10 lock screen, the Start menu, and has added all kinds of pop-ups and other intrusive, ad-like things to push its Edge browser on users.

All this is to say, while Microsoft may not be putting ads into File Explorer right now, it can and probably will.

Rogers, Telus, and Bell file opposing views on government’s 3800MHz band consultation

The federal government has received 62 separate documents from more than 50 groups sharing opinions on the 3800MHz band spectrum.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) opened the topic for comments in December and was looking for input on three pro-competitive measure options.

The first is a 50MHz set-aside, which means only some service providers will be allowed to bid on that part of the spectrum. It won’t be available to national mobile service providers (NMSPs) — those who possess at least 10 percent of the national wireless subscriber market share.

The second measure is a 100MHz cross-band cap applying to both the 3500MHz and 3800MHz bands. The third measure is a combination of the previous two options.

According to documents filed with the ISED, Telus is against the first option, favouring the 100MHz cross-band cap instead. The company says there’s “a disparity in NMSPs holdings that drives the need for a cross-band cap to facilitate post-auction competition and support investment.”

In a stance against Telus, Rogers says the 100Mhz option “should not be adopted under any circumstances, as it could destroy facilities-based competition between the two national networks” as Bell and Telus will pool their winning spectrums together “into their joint radio access network.”

“There is no justification why the Bell-Telus joint network (which combined only has about half again as many customers as Rogers) should effectively be gifted with the opportunity to assemble and benefit from 200MHz of mid-band spectrum while the Rogers and other networks are limited to 100MHz.”

Bell is against all three options. The company says the pro-competitive measures have “proven that they distort the auction process to the significant benefit of set-aside spectrum recipients and the detriment of Canadian taxpayers.”

Anyone wishing to respond to any of the comments has until March 21st to reply.

CRTC pulls RT and RT France off Canadian airwaves

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has officially removed RT and RT France from the list of foreign programs authorized for distribution in Canada.

The CRTC says distributing the two networks “is not in the public interest.”

“The CRTC is also concerned with programming from a foreign country that seeks to undermine the sovereignty of another country, demean Canadians of a particular ethnic background and undermine democratic institutions within Canada,” the ruling states.

The commission first announced it was opening the topic up for public discussion on March 3rd after it received a request from the Governor in Council to determine the channels’ future in Canada.

“Freedom of speech and a range of perspectives are a necessary part of our democracy. However, it is a privilege and not a right to be broadcast in Canada,” Ian Scott, CRTC chair, said.

“Foreign channels can be removed from the authorized list should their programming not be consistent with the standards to which Canadian services are held, or their continued distribution no longer serves the public interest, as was the case for RT and RT France.”

Interveners had five days to file comments. The CRTC received 373 submissions by the deadline. Telecom companies and Canadian residents represented part of the responses. The CRTC notes 350 0f these responses favoured removing the services, and 16 were for keeping them.

The CRTC says it considered the submissions, reports of violence coming out of Ukraine, and the many sanctions against Russia and steps by others to pull the service.

Russian cyberattacks could be coming to Canada soon, industry experts warn

In a surprise to no one, Russia sanctioned several Canadian political figures Tuesday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly, and Minister of Defence Anita Anand are blacklisted from entering Russia, along with a number of other Canadian politicians.

The moves came after Canada sanctioned Russia and many of its political figures. Canada has openly supported Ukraine during the ongoing war, sending aid and fast-tracking the immigration process for Ukrainians.

But as the Financial Post reports, Canada actively sanctioning Russia makes cyberattacks “inevitable.”

Farshad Abasi, chief security officer at Forward Security, told the publication cyber attacks may already be happening in Canada without anyone. “If they haven’t already, they will, and we need to be prepared.” The government investigated an attack on Global Affairs in January.

David Masson, director of enterprise security at Darktrace, told MobileSyrup these attacks could include Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks to take down websites. Doing so will make it harder for people to access important online operations, such as online banking.

Masson also says prominent Canadians could be targeted through cyber crimes individually, given Russia serves as a home base for many cybercriminals.

Politico has also reported Russian ransomware gang Conti has vowed to use all resources at their disposal to disrupt the critical infrastructure of anyone who stands in the way of the takeover.

With Canada’s vocal support for Ukraine, it’s not hard to imagine the country’s infrastructure being a target.

Masson notes Canada’s electricity sector is one of the areas that cybercrimes could impact. Any disruption would hinder industrial production and impact transport, communications, and other areas.

“Impacting the electricity grid via cyberattack would be a strong signal from Russia for Canada to take a step back in its support of Ukraine,” he told MobileSyrup.

OnePlus Nord 2T to bring back iconic sandstone finish

The OnePlus Nord 2T might bring back one of OnePlus’ pretty iconic features. Reportedly, the OnePlus Nord 2T will feature OnePlus’ classic sandstone finish.

91Mobiles has shown off a render of the OnePlus Nord 2T. While not an official render, 91Mobiles says they received it from an industry source.

The render showcases the black sandstone finish and huge camera module. Strangely, the camera module itself is blue with two circular rings. The top ring has a large sensor, while the bottom ring has two smaller lenses.

The industry source only provided renders of the rear, so the front is currently a mystery. However, sources indicate that the Oneplus Nord 2T will sport a hole punch camera in the top left corner.

Additionally, the OnePlus Nord 2T is rumoured to feature a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 2400 x 1080-pixel resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. It will also sport a MediaTek Dimensity 1300 processor, Android 12, 4,500mAh battery, 80W fast charger and more.

It’s possible that the OnePlus Nord 2T will come to Canada, but only time will tell. The phone is rumoured to launch in India in April or May.

Microsoft’s new AI-powered Smart Camera costs more than $1,000 in Canada

Microsoft has a new camera suped-up with artificial intelligence to help make its Surface Hub 2 better for meetings.

The AI-powered ‘Surface Hub 2 Smart Camera‘ will support automatic reframing, a wide field of view, and image correction features, according to The Verge. The camera sports a 12-megapixel sensor with a 136° field of view, as well as one teraflop of computing power (which is apparently more than the original Xbox 360).

Microsoft will use the power in conjunction with an algorithm it developed to automatically compensate for distortions, tilt, and wide-angle corrections to ensure the camera doesn’t distort people or objects.

Additionally, the camera can detect people in a room and adjust to make sure everyone stays visible during meetings.

The Smart Camera can attach to the Surface Hub 2 with a magnet and a USB-C mount.

It costs $1,025 in Canada (or $799.99 in the U.S.) and will be sold separately from the Surface Hub 2 starting March 16th in all markets where Microsoft sells the Surface Hub 2. While it sounds like a lot of money, it’s worth keeping in mind that the camera is aimed at businesses (and, particularly, ones that have already forked out the money for Surface Hub 2 devices).
