iRobot updates Roomba i3 with smart mapping technology

While iRobot’s high-end robot vacuums like the s9 and j7 series are regarded widely as some of the best in the industry, the company’s mid-range offering doesn’t have the same stellar reputation because it’s missing a key feature — smart mapping.

Thankfully, that’s no longer the case now that iRobot has updated its $449 Roomba i3 with new smart mapping functionality. This feature allows the robot to map your home’s floor plan and direct it to clean specific rooms. Smart mapping is also compatible with voice-activated assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant.

While a great move on iRobot’s part, ‘Keep Out Zones’ and ‘Clean Zones,’ two useful features that let you create specific barriers within mapped rooms, aren’t available with the i3. With the i3, the only option is the physical Virtual Wall Barrier accessories the company sells.

Along with this update, it looks like iRobot has removed the i7+ from its lineup as it’s no longer available on the tech company’s website. I’ve somewhat expected iRobot to make this change for the last few months following the reveal of the j7, the robot vacuum maker’s recently released Roomba that features the ability to avoid specific household items like cables and dog poop.

Get Telus’ PureFibre 300Mbps plan $45 off

Vancouver, Canada-based Telus is offering its PureFibre Internet 300 plan for $45 off.

The 300Mbps upload/download speed plan normally costs $120, but the new flash deal, shared by RedFlagDeals user ‘LesDeals,’ brings the price down to $75/month.

It’s worth noting that this promotion pricing is only available to current Telus and Koodo mobility customers. However, in case you’re a new customer, you can get the same plan for $85/month, which is still better than Telus’ regular $120 pricing.

It’s worth noting that the offer requires a two-year term, after which, the price will go back to $120. Also worth noting is that Telus’ PureFibre services are only available to Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec residents.

To claim the promotion, even if you’re not a current Telus customer, head to the offer page, click on ‘Get this deal’ and use promo code FLASH at checkout.

These Xbox Game Studios titles will run on Steam Deck (Halo isn’t one of them)

Microsoft detailed an official list of Xbox Game Studios (XGS) titles that will (and won’t) run on Valve’s Steam Deck.

Let’s get the big ones out of the way first: no, you won’t be nabbing frags in Halo Infinite on Valve’s handheld gaming PC anytime soon. Infinite, along with Gears 5Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Microsoft Flight Simulator X are all unsupported titles. Microsoft says the games are unsupported due to anti-cheat.

Interestingly, it’s worth pointing out that Flight Simulator X was released in 2006 and shouldn’t be confused with the new Microsoft Flight Simulator released in 2020 (which isn’t even included on this list).

Beyond the titles marked as unsupported, Microsoft lists eight games that are “Verified” and six that are “Playable.” The difference is that Playable titles may show a warning or make players type something with a virtual keyboard. In other words, it may not be as smooth an experience, but you can still play the game. The list of titles can be found below:

  • Verified
    • Deathloop
    • Psychonauts 2
    • Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
    • The Evil Within
    • Fallout Shelter
    • Prey
    • Battletoads
    • Max: The Curse of Brotherhood
  • Playable
    • Sea of Thieves
    • Fallout 4
    • Forza Horizon 5
    • Forza Horizon 4
    • Quantum Break
    • State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition

It’s worth noting that Microsoft’s list only covers Xbox Game Studios games that are currently available on Steam, although not all of them (looking at you, 2020 Flight Simulator). That said, the Steam Deck recently got access to Windows drivers, so some users can make the leap from Steam OS to Windows if they want to.

Valve CEO Gabe Newell also previously said the company was open to working with Microsoft to bring its Game Pass subscription service to the platform, which could open the door to having Game Pass on Steam Deck (without needing Windows).

Here’s the ‘Green’ and ‘Alpine Green’ iPhone 13/iPhone 13 Pro

Apple’s new ‘Green’ iPhone 13 mini/iPhone 13 and ‘Alpine Green’ iPhone 13 Pro/iPhone 13 Pro Max are now available to pre-order, starting at $949/$1,099 and $1,399/$1,549, respectively. The new green iPhone 13 devices release on March 18th.

The smartphones are identical to the rest of the iPhone 13 lineup beyond the new green colour. Last year, Apple released a new ‘Purple’ iPhone 12/iPhone 12 mini colour, but with the iPhone 13, the tech giant opted for two distinct green hues across the iPhone 13 lineup.

After briefly going hands-on with the ‘Green’ iPhone 13 and the ‘Alpine Green’ iPhone 13 Pro, I’d say I prefer the Pro variant of the new colour. It reminds me of the awesome-looking ‘Midnight Green’ iPhone 11 Pro colour and is a cool throwback to Apple’s 2019 flagship smartphone.

Check out a few photos of Apple’s new green iPhone colours below:

Apple’s iPhone SE (2022), iPad Air (2022) and Green iPhone 13 are now available for pre-order

Apple’s iPhone SE (2022), iPad Air (2022) and new green iPhone 13/iPhone 13 Pro are now available for pre-order.

iPhone SE (2022)

The iPhone SE (2022) features the same 4.7-inch iPhone 8-like design as its predecessor, including the popular physical Touch ID Home Button. This year’s upgrades include the iPhone 13 series’ A15 chip, 5G connectivity and new software-powered camera features.

The iPhone SE (2022) starts at $579 and is available in ‘Midnight,’ ‘Starlight’ and ‘Product Red.’ The smartphone releases on March 18th and is available to pre-order now.

iPad Air (2022)

Like the iPhone SE (2022), the new iPad Air (2022)’s upgrades are mostly inside. The tablet features Apple’s powerful M1 processor, the same chip added to the iPad Pro line, and features new colours like ‘Blue’ and ‘Starlight.’

The iPad Air (2022) starts at $749 and is available in ‘Space Grey,’ ‘Pink,’ ‘Purple,’ ‘Blue’ and ‘Starlight.’ The tablet releases on March 18th and is available to pre-order now.

iPhone 13 ‘Green’ and iPhone 13 Pro ‘Alpine Green’

Apple’s new ‘Green’ iPhone 13 mini/iPhone 13 and ‘Alpine Green’ iPhone 13 Pro/iPhone 13 Pro Max are now available to pre-order starting at $949/$1,099 and $1,399/$1,549 respectively.

The smartphones are identical to the rest of the iPhone 13 lineup beyond the new colour, which seems to take inspiration from the iPhone 11 Pro’s ‘Midnight Green.’

The new green iPhone 13 devices release on March 18th and are available to pre-order now.

PlayStation 4 owners can now receive a free three-month subscription to Apple TV+.

The offer is eligible to new subscribers and requires you to have a free PSN and Apple ID. If you meet those criteria, follow these steps to claim the subscription:

Valve’s Steam Deck can now run Windows

Valve’s Steam Deck is a work in progress when it comes to features and game compatibility, but the latest update has been hotly anticipated: Windows 10 compatibility.

Regardless of how impressive it is that the portable gaming device can play new releases like Elden Ring, Windows compatibility is a significant step to getting more games on the Steam Deck.

But don’t get too excited. This doesn’t necessarily mean Microsoft’s growing library of Xbox Game Pass titles will suddenly run on Valve’s handheld. An agreement like this would likely be more complex and might not include notable Xbox titles like Halo Infinite.

According to a blog post from Valve, the Steam Deck now has GPU, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Windows drivers, which are required to play and download titles. Unfortunately, there aren’t audio drivers yet, so the Steam Deck’s speakers won’t work when running Windows 10. USB-C and Bluetooth earbuds/headphones are viable alternative until Windows audio drivers hit the device.

Installing Windows requires also a complete wipe of the Steam Deck’s internal storage, and there’s no way to dual-boot SteamOS and Microsoft’s operating system. Further, The Verge points out that the Steam Deck’s BIOS doesn’t currently support TPM, which is required to install Windows 11.

Hopefully, Windows 10 hitting the Steam Deck is a precursor to a partnership between Valve and Microsoft that brings Xbox Game Pass to the handheld. On the plus side, both Valve founder Gabe Newell and Xbox head Phil Spencer are at least interested in exploring the possibility.

I’ll have a review of the Steam Deck up on MobileSyrup in the coming weeks.

Google Messages users can now receive iPhone reactions as emojis

Google has added new features to its Android Messages app that make interacting with iPhone users a better experience.

Reactions from iPhone users will now appear as emoji on text messages — just like when you message your Android friends. This feature was available for Google Messages beta users starting last month, but it’s now rolling out for everyone.

Another new Messages app feature sorts your messages into ‘personal’ and ‘business’ tabs. One-time password messages will be deleted after 24 hours. Additionally, you’ll get nudges to reply to messages if you miss them.

Google Messages will also offer grammar corrections on Gboard now, but this only works with English (U.S.).

The Live Transcribe that’s preinstalled on Pixel and Samsung phones no provides real-time speech-to-text captions offline.

Lastly, Nearby Share is releasing to all devices Android 6+ devices, and you can now share with multiple people at a time.
