Montreal-based Motive’s Dead Space remake releasing in early 2023

Montreal-based Motive’s remake of Dead Space will arrive in “early 2023,” according to a recent livestream from the studio.

The Electronic Arts’ studio also detailed how it’s improving original Dead Space’s already excellent audio, including the noise Isaac Clarke’s Plasma Cutter makes, and other notable features like his breathing and heart rate.

Interestingly, Clarke’s dialogue will shift based on how tired the character is through a new ‘Intelligent Dialogue’ system that features three variations: ‘Normal,’ ‘Fatigued’ and ‘Injure.’

The remake of 2008’s Dead Space was announced last July. The survival horror title is regarded widely as one of the best titles released in the genre. It focuses Clarke’s fight to stay alive onboard a mysteriously empty mining starship called the USG Ishimura.

Though I played Dead Space on the Xbox 360 back when it was first released, beyond its absolutely terrifying enemies and spooky spaceship atmosphere, I remember very little about the title beyond the fact that I really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to diving into this remake.

The Dead Space remake is set to come to Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 and PC.

Niantic to disable access to Pokémon Go and more in Russia

Niantic, the American developer behind popular titles like Pokémon Go, Ingress, and Pikmin Bloom is now taking action against Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.

The three above-mentioned games are no longer available for download in Russia and Belarus, and those who already have the games will soon be unable to access them, according to Niantic’s Tweet dated March 10th.

The move from Niantic comes soon after other video game developers and publishers restricted the Russian market in some capacity. Sony announced that it is suspending the sale of its consoles and software in Russia, along with shutting down its PlayStation Store for those accessing it from the nation. Whereas EA removed all Russian club and International teams from its FIFA and NHL titles along with ceasing all sales in Russia and Belarus, including games, content and even including virtual currency bundles.

Check out this roundup of all big tech/social media sanctions against Russia to read what other game developers/publishers like the Montreuil, France-based Ubisoft and the Warsaw, Poland-based CD Projekt Red are implementing.

This isn’t available for all products, but the e-commerce giant says the restriction has been removed on “millions of items.”

Look for the “Get it by Tomorrow” check box in the filter menu on desktop or the Amazon app to find these items. To make sure you get an item within the one-day window, check the ‘order within’ countdown timer on the details page.

Some postal codes in Canada aren’t eligible for one-day shopping. You can check to see if your postal code fits the bill here.

Russia to restrict access to Instagram on March 14th

Following Russia’s media state agency blocking access to Meta-owned Facebook within the nation earlier this month as a response to the social networking restricting multiple state-owned media accounts, Instagram was left unscathed.

Now, according to Russia’s communication and mass media state regulator Roskomnadzor, Instagram will soon suffer the same fate in the country, quoting a temporary change in the platform’s hate speech policy that allows people from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine to publish posts that call for violence against Russian troops along with the Russian and Belarusian presidents.

Russia will implement a ban on Instagram on March 14th, according to a Telegram message from Roskomnadzor, as seen below:

Roskomnadzor says that the nation hasn’t banned Instagram right yet, and users have been given 48 hours to retrieve their photos and videos from the platform. After 12am Russian time on March 14th however, the platform will be inaccessible.

Meta hasn’t released an official statement regarding the upcoming ban of its photo-sharing service yet. Meta-owned WhatsApp is still expected to work in the country.

Ontario launches $1 million post-secondary scholarship program for esports

The Ontario Government has announced plans to launch a post-secondary scholarship program tied to the burgeoning esports industry.

In a press release, the government outlined that it has set aside $1 million over two years for the scholarship that aims to offer financial assistance to students attending programs related to game development, design, marketing and more.

“As the first province in Canada to recognize the educational value of esports design and development in this way, we will support students who are building skills that can lead to discoveries, innovation, training opportunities and economic benefits for Ontario,” said Colleges and Universities Minister Jill Dunlop.

“This investment will help students pursue their passion and prepare for careers in the highly lucrative video game and esports sector, and to develop transferable skills valued by employers across countless industries.”

The government of Ontario says that the program will be available to publically supported colleges and universities.

According to the Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC), the Canadian gaming industry has grown 23 percent since 2019 to contribute $5.5 billion to the country’s total GDP. There are also now 937 active game studios in Canada, a 35 percent increase over 2019.

Rivian didn’t even deliver 950 vehicles in 2021

Rivian has made one of the most appealing electric vehicles ever, but it’s struggling to actually get them into customers’ hands.

A report from The Verge details that the company only shipped a total of 920 vehicles and lost $4.7 billion USD (roughly, $5.9 billion CAD). This is likely part of the reason the company decided to go nuclear a few weeks ago and boost the cost of existing pre-orders by as much as 20 percent in some cases. The company later backtracked on this, but it was after most of the pre-order owners walked away from the company.

However, 2022 has been a much better year for the company since it’s apparently worked out some of its production kinks. So far its made over 2,400 deliveries with a goal of 25,000 by the end of the year. Still, that’s not going to make a huge dent in the 83,000 pre-orders the company has received.

The 25,000 vehicles the company plans to make this year also includes Amazon delivery vans. It’s unclear how many R1T trucks will actually be produced. Amazon, a substantial investor in Rivian, has ordered 100,000 delivery vans by 2030. There were originally plans to get 10,000 electric delivery vans on the road by the end of 2022.

Rivian says that if supply chain issues weren’t an issue, it would be able to make 50,000 trucks in a year.

Here’s how much the iPhone SE (2022) costs at Canadian carriers

One of the big announcements at Apple’s March 8th ‘Peek Performance’ event was a new iPhone SE. If you’re wondering how much it’ll cost to get your hands on one of these bad boys, read on.

Buying the iPhone SE from Apple

The best way to get an iPhone SE will almost certainly be to buy it outright from Apple, where it starts at $579 in Canada for the 64GB model (keep that price in mind while reading through the carrier prices below).

It’s also worth noting that the iPhone SE is available for pre-order now and will release on March 18th.

You can learn more about pre-ordering the iPhone SE from Apple here.

Buying the iPhone SE from Canadian carriers

Several Canadian carriers also have the iPhone SE available for pre-order, and will also offer the phone starting March 18th. We’ve included a list of iPhone SE pricing at various carriers below.

If a carrier isn’t listed, chances are they haven’t released information about purchasing an iPhone SE yet — stay tuned for updates.

Bell

The iPhone SE starts at $0 down with a $24.80/mo financing cost (which works out to $595.20 over 24 months).

Alternatively, Bell sells the phone outright for $595.08.

You can check it out here.

Telus

Telus has the iPhone SE starting at $0 down and $24.79/mo financing ($594.96 over two years).  Telus charges $595 for the iPhone SE outright. Telus is also offering up to six months of Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade with purchase.

You can check it out here.

Virgin Plus

iPhone starts at $0 down and $24.80/mo financing at Virgin ($595.20 total) or $595.08 outright.

Learn more here.

Koodo

Like its parent company, Koodo is offering six months of Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade with the iPhone SE.

Koodo’s pricing, on the other hand, isn’t terrible. The provider doesn’t do device financing — instead, it uses a ‘Tab’ system where customers can put an amount of the phone’s cost on the Tab and pay that back over 24 months.

On Koodo’s Tab Plus, the iPhone SE costs $0 upfront with a $24/mo Tab charge ($576 total). Customers who want to pay less each month can go with ‘Tab Mid’ and pay $216 upfront and $15/mo Tab, or ‘Tab Basic’ at $336 upfront and $10/mo Tab charge.

Outright, the iPhone SE costs $595 at Koodo.

Learn more here.

Freedom Mobile

The iPhone SE starts at $0 down and $14/mo My Tab charge on a $50/mo plan ($336 over 24 months). Outright, Freedom charges $595 for the phone.

Learn more here.

Shaw Mobile

Shaw Mobile has the iPhone SE available, but it’s worth noting that pricing for both the phone and your plan depends on your Shaw internet plan. The base option appears to be $0 upfront for the iPhone SE and $14/mo on Shaw’s ‘MyTab’ ($336 over 24 months) with a $45/mo plan.

Learn more here.

Eastlink

iPhone SE starts at $0 upfront and $22.96/mo on the ‘easyTab’ ($551.04 over 24 months). Eastlink charges $551 outright for the phone.

SaskTel

At SaskTel, the iPhone SE is available for $0 down and $4.17/mo ($100.08 over 24 months) on the carrier’s ‘Plus Pricing’ with a two-year ‘Voice & Data’ plan. The iPhone SE costs $594.99 outright.
